In the novel Everyone Leaves by Wendy Guerra, the writing shows the effects of events on the relationships between characters. The book focuses largely on the relationship between Nieve, the protagonist, and her Mother. This relationship is changed throughout the book. The relationship is shown in different ways in the beginning, middle, and end of the book.

The main character of the novel is shown to have a really good relationship with her Mom at the beginning of the book. They are connected, and The protagonist worries about her Mom. In her journal, the young girl writes that “She’s not going to deal well with that war. My Mother is more afraid of the outside than I am. She trembles when we’re alone together, and she drops the flashlight …show more content…
Nieve had been put into an Orphanage/School, and when her Mom comes to get her, Nieve has some remarks about her Mother. When asked why a kid with parents would be put up for adoption, Nieve mutters “‘Because it doesn’t really look like she has parents,’...”. (pg 86) This shows that the once great relationship that Nieve once had with her Mother is fractured and shows how long they have been apart. Nieves Mother also has something to say about how their relationship has fallen apart. When Nieve and her Mother get back to the house the Mother lives in, her Mother says that “‘She was one girl when she left,but she’s come back another.’”(pg 88) Nieve’s Mother is so used to the young girl who cleaned and made her bed and went to school. Nieve now though is a girl doesn’t follow the rules and really doesn’t do a lot. It's still tough, because of the Mother's disapproval of Nieve’s boyfriend, Osvaldo. Nieve writes that “My mother doesn’t like Osvaldo. She disagreed with everything he said.”(187) Because of this disagreement, Nieve and her Mother because distant. Nieve goes to live with Osvaldo n his house. Later on, After Osvaldo leaves to go to france and Nieve is waiting for him to take her there, she writes about her Mother and her talking. “Now that time passed, she doesn’t censor things.
