Manipulation and Control

If people are manipulated and controlled, they will eventually become dissatisfied with their surroundings . I will be analyzing these themes in the Truman Show directed by Peter Weir, the song ‘Power and Control’ performed by Marina and the Diamonds, and my visual representation.

The media is a powerful device that can be used to manipulate and control our thoughts and emotions, this is exposed in the Truman Show directed by Peter Weir. As it increasingly becomes clear to the titular character that his life is being filmed and broadcasted to the world, and as a result becomes unhappy with his world and is determined to escape. An example of manipulation is in the dock scene where Truman's best friend Marlon tries to rationalize Truman's feelings. Truman expresses his recent paranoia, knowing something isn't right. The camera cuts back and forth between close-up shots of Marlon and Truman, as he diverts …show more content…
The lyric, “Give a little, get a lot/That’s just how you are with love” uses the technique of antithesis, to show her partners, lack of reciprocation in their relationship. Furthermore, in the lyric, “Women and men, we are the same/But love will always be game” she states that men and women are on an equal level but through her use of cliche, and high modality, communicates that her partner still seems to have power over her through his manipulation. In the lyric “‘Cause all my life I’ve been controlled/ You can’t have peace without a war” she reveals her desires to escape her relationship, tired of lies and deceit her partner has been giving her, and again uses antithesis to say that she’ll have to fight for her escape from her situation. He shows in the film how a viewer can be so mindlessly absorbed by others surrounding them on television. In this close-up Truman appears to be crying with happiness and loss, which in many cases would influence the way the audience feels, possibly making some cry of happiness or making them feel overwhelmed with emotion. ...Truman Capote’s use of form in his novel In Cold Blood really grabs the reader’s attention. His manipulation of form makes the reader feel as if they are part of the investigation that occurred after the unforgettable night at the Clutter house. He places the information that he gathered from the research in the book in a very interesting sequence that leaves the reader in a state of confusion. The way he jumps from the investigation to the killers within the book adds a sense of dramatic irony but never gives away why or how these cruel men murdered the family. What confuses the reader even more is that Capote leaves us feeling sorry for one of these vicious men, Perry. How Capote utilizes form makes the reader build an emotional attachment towards the killers. The reader begins to develop sympathy for Perry because, as you see in the movie Capote, Capote favors Perry and does not want the world to see him as some malicious monster, yet as a human being. The way Capote opens this novel is by introducing the family and the killers. This gives the reader a feel of each character, but only to a certain extent. This allows you to know what kind of family the Clutters were and strive to figure out why someone would kill them, or possibly rob them and it somehow turn into a mass murder.
