...Improve Life with Just a Little Exercise Kysha Baker ENG147 07/25/2014 Roxanne Grandis Improve Life with Just a Little Exercise More than one-third of American’s are obese and it’s fair to say that most of that percentage also suffer from depression. World Health Organization states that health is “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease, or infirmity. (As cited in Khalil, Callaghan, Carter, & Morres, 2012 p. 2) People’s lives are so busy and hectic now they forget one simple thing that could help, exercise. The benefits of exercise can reduce health issues, while improving a person’s quality of life and confidence in one self. Regular exercise can help reduce a number health issues, including depression. Even though the links between depression and exercise aren’t clear, the effects of exercise will help a person relax and feel better. Exercise will release feel-good brain chemicals like neurotransmitters and endorphins which may ease depression symptoms. Also, the concentrations of several biologically active molecules, such as adrenocorticotrophic hormones, can change with regular exercise. (Dimeo, Bauer, Varahram, Proest, & Halter, 2001 p. 116). This hormone can affect the pituitary gland, which in turn could cause weight gain, which in turn could cause more depression. It’s a vicious cycle that needs to end to help save lives. Besides helping with health issues, a person’s quality of life can be...

...It is a common myth across the globe that too much running is bad for the human body. But is this true? Is there a specific amount of mileage that is the best? By knowing how much running is good for one’s health and how it actually benefits the body, could this help people live longer and keep them healthier? Some believe that too much running is actually bad for the body and has different effects than intended. Still others state that running, no matter the amount, is good for you. However, there is only one right answer. As a result of running too much, the intended good effects could cease to exist; because of this, it is imperative to find a “middle-ground” while running. With this in mind, too much running has been proven to be bad for...

...laying in the middle of the road or in an ambulance. Addiction can majorly affect your health. Addiction is the uncontrollable use of a mind- altering substance or behavior that harms your physical, mental and spiritual health. Health is balancing our physical, mental and spiritual health using the four daily requirements: food, rest, exercise and elimination. Physical health is any biological function related to the 12 body systems. That means eating healthy, exercising, resting and eliminating. Addiction can affect your physical health by affecting the 12 body systems. Addiction to drugs (mainly alcohol) can lead to Cirrhosis of the Liver-which is when the liver dries up and can’t function properly. I learned this when we talked about Mickey Mantle who was an addict and he had Cirrhosis and he died from it. Addiction can affect your physical health by possibly giving you alcohol poisoning (only if you are addicted to alcohol and if you drink a lot of it). You might get really drunk and get alcohol poisoning and almost die. Oh believe me it’s possible, it has happened before. It has happened quite a few times actually to be precise. I learned this from the Binge drinking video. Addiction can also affect your mental health. Mental health is your ability to reason. That means being able to calculate, evaluate, compare, and contrast. Addiction can affect your mental health by impairing you of your ability to reason. I learned this in one of our lessons. Doing...

...The Effect of Acute and Chronic Exercise on Stress, Anxiety, and Depression March 8, 2015 Abstract Mental health is a severe problem in our society today, approximately 61.5 million of the Americans experience mental illness in each given year (NAMI, 2013). The main goal of this paper is to provide answers on how physical activity can replace anti-anxiety and depression drugs. To solve this question numerous research articles were examined by looking at how both acute and chronic bouts of aerobic and anaerobic exercise correlated with mental health aspects such as stress, depression, and anxiety. The findings showed that almost all types of exercise showed the capability of being able to improve mental health significantly. Thus, it is possible for physical activity to become a replacement for drugs being administered to the general population today, which allows people to treat their mental illness without the adverse side effects, which accompany drugs. This is supported by multiple studies done that compared physical exercise and drugs as treatments for mental disorders. All the studies support the claim that physical activity could be used as a replacement for drugs in treating mental illness. Introduction Mental health illness is a severe issue affecting a significant portion of Americans every day. Serious mental illnesses have been reported to cost America $193.2 Billion in lost earning per year (NAMI, 2013). Specifically, 14.8 million people...

Recently the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (D.S.M.), the standard reference work for psychiatric illnesses, announced [in the last decade] updated definitions of substance abuse and addiction, including a new category of behavioral addictions (Markel).'' Although substance addictions are accompanied by a variety of...

...just good old fashion recreational sports. There is something out there for everyone, but it is up to each individual to find out what suits his or her lifestyle the best. An individual must also know his or her physical limitations so that he or she does not strain the body or incur more serious injuries. Physical fitness is an amazing thing, it helps the participant feel better physically, perform better mentally, and transforms the human body visually. Being physically fit is something that is somewhat overlooked in today’s society. It is constantly preached that if a person exercise’s regularly he or she will feel better. This is true, but it is important for that person to know his or her physical limitations when exercising. Exercise must be done on a regular basis and ascend gradually to be effective. If someone overstrains his or her body he or she will be tired, sore, and lose the drive to continue exercising. The key is for them to gradually build their way up to intense physical activity, sporadic sprints will only strain his or her body. Exercising causes the heart, lungs, and muscles to work harder, which will in turn, increase their strength, stamina, and longevity. From the writings of Hippocrates, “That which is used, develops; that which is not used, wastes away.” (Simon 4). Once the body gets accustomed to a routine it takes less effort to accomplish and higher goals can be set and...

Everyone knows how to care for their bodies. This is done almost every day by the majority of people. Exercise and eating the proper foods are the best ways of keeping the body healthy. Most often, the food consumed has a pivotal effect on the body, as well as, the mind. A healthy diet consists of the right food groups with right number of calories. ... COM156 January 8th, 2012 Leah Omilion ADHD in Children: Medication and the Natural Approach Making ADHD medication decisions for your child can be difficult, but doing your homework can help. The first thing to understand is exactly what the medications for ADD and ADHD can and can’t do and to know that it isn’t a magic pill that will fix all of your or your Childs’ problems. Medication can help reduce the symptoms of hyperactivity, inattentiveness, and impulsivity but they also come with many risks. The negative effects of stimulant medication in children with ADHD are staggering; however, there is a natural approach that can be just as effective. Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD is a neurological disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate impulsivity, inattention, and in some cases, hyperactivity. It is estimated by the American Psychiatric Association in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) that 3%-7% of school-aged children have ADHD1. ADHD is characterized by many symptoms including the following: • Poor concentration, distractibility, impulsive behavior, careless mistakes, difficulty in controlling anger. • Inability to complete tasks, difficulty sustaining attention toward tasks. • Hyperactive behavior, excessive activity, fidgeting, squirming, running, climbing excessively. • Poor listening skills. • Talking excessively, blurting out answers before hearing the...

The mind is the mental quality of a person.” The mind is responsible for our thoughts and helping us process of thinking. Our minds help us reflect and provide a mental picture of our thoughts and help understanding. Our body is the physical of what our mind demonstrates our masks. Honoring our body with exercise, nutritious foods, and adequate rest builds a foundation of self care. Through self care we strengthen our beliefs, our uniqueness, and our spiritual connection. The spirit is the soul. “The soul is the moral and emotional nature of a human being, a strong positive feeling, a spiritual or moral force (Webster’s Dictionary, 1999).” Spirituality gives us a common language that allows us to connect with each other. In believing that we are an individual piece of a divine design we are motivated to seek our destiny. Spirituality is the place from where we all come from, the place we are, and the place we all will go. In taking on this real meaning of spirituality one can embrace oneself and others fully. “Many people believe, however, that spiritual feelings and experiences- those that are not necessarily achieved by the application of logic and critical thought but that are more intuitive and subjective-cannot affect a person’s health.” (Edlin, G.; Golanty, E.; Brown, K.1997) 2.
