Experience Interview

Liberty University EDUC 521

Part 1: Demographics
Name of person you are interviewing: Rachael
Name of individual with the disability: Charlie
Describe the disability: Autism Spectrum Disorder (Autism)
Age of the individual with the disability: 3 years old
Describe the relationship between the family member and the individual with the disability: Mother
Part 2: Interview 1. How did you learn that Charlie has a disability? (Who was present? When did this happen?) If you were giving advice to professionals who need to explain to a parent that his/her child has a special need, what would that advice be? a. I found out about Charlie’s disability when he was 2 years old and 3 months. I noticed that his language development was very low and he liked to stay to himself a lot. Because I was worried about his language, my husband and I spoke to a doctor. The advice that I would give to a professional would be to make sure that the professional gives the parents all options to help with this life-changing event. Another thing that I would tell professionals is to be sensitive to the parent’s feelings and know what you are talking about.

2. How did you feel when you received the diagnosis? b. When I received this diagnosis I didn’t want to accept it. I felt heart broken; I couldn’t and didn’t want to believe that my child (and family) would have to go through this. I felt pain, sadness, anger, and confusion all at the same time. All I could think about was how could this have been avoided and what did I do wrong.

3. Have your feelings changed since the initial diagnosis? Describe. c. Yes! My feelings have changed so much since this diagnosis. Before I was angry and confused. I don’t feel like that at all. Although it was a big change for me I am grateful for my son. I am happy that he is growing and developing with the help of others. For me I’m still learning and that is okay!

4. What have been the positive aspects of having a child in the family with a disability? d. I’ve notice inner strength that I never knew I had. With all the challenges that we’ve face it has made me a stronger person. It has also taught me patience and to look at the good in all things. 5. What have been the problems or challenges you have experienced having a child with a disability? e. One challenge I experienced was understanding the large gap between what Charlie can do and what he cannot do. It was very frustrating to be told or read about my child not being able to do normal things that other children could do. At the beginning the biggest challenge was accepting that he has this diagnosis.

6. How did your other children react to learning his/her brother/sister had a disability? What impact has __________ had on them? (if appropriate) f. N/A

7. What kinds of support have been most helpful to you? (family members, parent groups, neighbors, other?) How would you prioritize your family needs and the areas in which you feel that you need more assistance? g. Family members have been an awesome support group for us. They’ve been there for us more since the day we told them about the diagnosis.

8. What have been your experiences in working with school personnel? What have they done that has been most helpful? What have they done that was least helpful or even harmful? h. Well Charlie is in a corporate childcare center. My experience with his teacher and the administrative team has been great. They are very understanding and helpful. They’ve given information and give time for his therapist to see him. His therapist comes to the center and he spends 30mins to an hour with them out of the classroom. They haven’t done anything harmful to Charlie.

9. How could the school help your child transition to adulthood? i. The center could and are helping to reinforce self-help skills that we teach at home.

10. If I were to be Charlie’s teacher next year, what advice would you want to give me so that he/she has an optimum learning experience? j. I would say to have patience and understanding with him.

11. What would you want me to do/not do in terms of my interactions with you if I were Charlie’s teacher? k. I would love to hear positive things about his day before jumping straight into the negative things. Also please be sensitive to my feelings and make sure that the correct terminology is being used.

12. I am just learning about students with disabilities and how to work effectively with them in my classroom. What other information would you like me—and my classmates—to know about working with children with special needs? l. It is very important to have patience with children with special needs. Don’t give up on them so easily, it can get stressful but seeing the children grow will be well worth it. Also, continue to research and do not stop learning about this topic. Every piece of information can be helpful.

Part 3: Summary
It is very important that teachers have patience when teaching an inclusive class. That means the teacher is patient with all children, including the children with autism. Not only should the teacher have patience but the family needs to have patience too. Behavior is important when teaching an inclusive class or parenting a child. One thing that the teacher and parents should be doing to help the child is video modeling. Video modeling is when an adult or peer demonstrates a behavior that the child will perform later. They must show the child the correct way of behaving.
Another important principle I have learned that can benefit this family is to have an understanding. To help the child you should first understand the child. Often teachers don’t understand what students with autism is capable of doing, once they have understanding of this I believe class could run smoother for them. The family can also help minimize the stress and worry of the child. Practice and implement some of the same strategies that the teacher is implementing; help the child become more familiar with it so that is becomes easier for the child.
When there are changes in the routine, it is recommended the student be prepped ahead of time so excessive anxiety will not arise (May, 2005). Children with autism are not fond of change. This is why preparing the child before anything changes is very important. Once again, we want to keep stress to a minimal level. There are many programs that teachers and parents can become familiar with. The TEACCH program is good for helping to build the child’s memory strength. I believe it is important for parents to educate themselves on these programs because they could be quite helpful.

Post Interview Reflection

...My strongest impression of CityU admission interview was the group interview as such interview is still very rare among business school. But end up I found out what I enjoyed most was the group interview session. Every applicant can enter the discussion with proper mind-set and effectively showcase every applicant’s temperament and character. From discussion until we reached a consensus within a certain time limit, everyone has to act with thoughtfulness and diplomacy. This experience provides me practical experience of group discussion in future business school class. I was also impressed by the school’s practical learning approach. To me the opportunity to vet my ideas through the Mentorship Program and Residential Trip, gaining the critique of industry experts, is unprecedented. I would take that critical feedback, bolster my ides and then apply to my career path. I want to be truly immersed in my MBA experience, academically and socially, and CityU offers me vast opportunities to bond with like-minded students. Ultimately, however what draws me to CityU is the vibrancy and diversity of its community. Sitting in with Professor Kevin was incredible; the sparkle and humor in the room turned applicants anxieties feeling into relax but informative experience. Another thing that has come to my attention was the guitar inside Professor Kevin room. I believe a good leader demonstrate his support for work-life balance will lead a successful MBA team. The applicants I met...

First Marketing Research Field Experience

...7:30-9:00 TTh Last August 6, 2014, our group was assigned to interview retailers and compradors of meat and poultry in Alcoy and some parts of Dalaguete, Cebu markets regarding the Marketing Research of the USC Business Administration Department about meat and poultry supply from Alegria, Cebu. We were accompanied by Ms. Ivy Jumao-as and Dr. Larry Silapan. We departed from Cebu City 4:30 am going to the south of Cebu. We arrived in Alcoy market around 7am. We expected a tabo in Alcoy but the locals said tabo is every Thursday. There were only 3 meat and poultry retailers in Alcoy that time. We weren’t able to see compradors since all three of them take their products themselves from the suppliers. Most of them get their products from Dalaguete. We conducted an interview with each of the retailers. After Alcoy, we headed to Mantalongon, Dalaguete market. There were only 2 stalls of meat products there. One stall gets their supply from Alegria. People there were so nice and accommodating. They were so kind in answering our questions. Next stop was Dalaguete market. There were 8 retailers of meat and poultry but only one gets the products from Alegria. After the interview, we had lunch and head our way home. It was such a great experience for me since it was my first time to conduct a real and serious research. It wasn’t only learning but also experiencing and having fun. We heard real life stories and experiences from our interviewees. We were so amazed how they answered all...

The Expert Witness

...typically assume that there are two types of witnesses: the fact witness who has direct knowledge of the issues in the case and the expert witness who will use his/her specialized knowledge, skill and experience to assist the judge and the jury to understand the evidence. Most of the time these two witnesses are changed into an expert in a particular field who has first hand knowledge or involvement in the basic facts. This type of witness is called the expert witness. Calling in an expert witness can have pros and cons for the organization. The expert witness can be held in favor of the security manager but in the end the expert witness works for the courts. I think the key to deterrence of loss from the Expert Witness Trap is to first have the credentials and awareness to decrease or exclude the need for one in the first place. The experts should remained focused in various areas of the job and be able to easily communicate their education, experience and abilities. Then, when an expert witness is required, the Security Manager should be able to carefully review a pool of experts, interview them and eventually select ones that are appropriate for their situations. It is critical that such experts are ordered and there is a method to file complaints and pass along experiences through a formal ranking system. To avoid such traps individuals should take note of the following items: Witness’ Status: Determine the witness’ status early in the litigation. The fact...

Sales and Relationship Management - J.P. Reynolds Investments

...1. I can identify almost all type of variables that could affect performances reviewing the two interviews. The way the candidates describe their experience shows off that they have , even if in different views, a role perception about the job. Furthermore, opposite motivations and aptitude to the work are remarked through their expectancies and behavioral strategies. They present skill levels depending on their carrier’s path . I think organizational (defining only the area) and the environmental factors relating to the job are missing. 2. In my opinion, Dag Wicklo (DW) has a better perception of the work is going to do because of his previous experience in this field as employee and his love for selling and speak with people. Katharine Bryant (KB) knows the specific technical language but she never work as sales in this particular field and maybe she doesn’t know or remember what does it means to work as employee instead of being an owner. For J.P. Reynolds I think a good variable for perception could be the accuracy in the way candidates see the job with all the pro and cons, so being experienced in this particular field matters. Within motivations I can see again a remarkable will to make money from DW and but I could not for KB. She doesn’t feel stimulate to gain money and this could affect her performance as well. The company’s point of view on motivations has to be in line with maximization of the opportunities. DW seems more willing to try to exploit his balance...

Problem Solving

...that it is crucial to look your best during your work day and also during interviews. Unfortunately with time our faces tend to age with frown lines that can have a negative impact or influence on employers or customers. One may simply feel that you are unfriendly or grouchy just by looking at you during a first impression. This can cause the customer/Guest/hiring manager to choose a different candidate for the job. One that may appear more up beat, youthful, or may appear to have more energy due to not having the problem-aging. Being in the working field of customer service I have found that one of the best solutions to this problem-aging is Botox. Botox or Onabotulinumtoxin A is a protein and neurotoxin used to prevent wrinkles by paralyzing muscles in the face. The cost of Botox depends on where you live, who is doing the injections, how many units of Botox you may need, and where you are injecting it. Usually you will be looking at anywhere between $10.00per unit to $14.00per unit. In my experienced for frown lines its usually 25-35 units resulting in appx. $300.00 per session. Botox lasts anywhere between 3-6 months so you would figure on getting two sessions per year resulting in a cost of appx. $600.00 per year. Cocktail servers in a casino are the best examples of using Botox as a tool to earn more tips. The friendlier their appearance is, the bigger the tips will be. In my experience Id say that botox is the difference of at least $50.00 more in tips a night...

In drawing out the commonalities of their experiences, we have begun to shed light on the terrain. We must transform the terrain if women are to have equality and safety in their workplaces. 2 We dedicate this report to Theresa Vince whose death in 1996 changed the views of many people in Ontario about sexual and workplace harassment. Her tragic and untimely death showed us that workplace harassment can no longer be easily dismissed as a trivial problem. Comparison & Contrast Essay - Living at Home and Living Away from Home as Students (During the Higher Education Studies)

...Comparison & Contrast Essay Living at home and living away from home as students (during the higher education studies) Millions of students are often faced with the question of whether it is better to live at home or to go abroad and hence away from home for the period of their studies. Many would probably intuitively say that leaving home is an effort that is not necessary since the same opportunities for one’s study are often given where one lives, thus at the home city or home place. However, there are a number of advantages that can be found about the same decision. To begin with, living at home while studying means being close to family, friends and colleagues one knows, likes, and loves. It is simple, convenient and beneficial to keep and foster those relations. In fact, most friendships are built in the environment one grew up in, went to school, or worked. Hence, staying home during the studies provides the possibility for spending more enjoyable time with these friends and family members. This means that one can go out for a drink with friends after the university or college, have a dinner or enjoy a movie at the cinema together. More importantly however, apart from spending the good times together, very often study-related problems occur. This could mean to have troubles with a lecturer who does not grade fairly or fellow students who do not treat someone appropriately, i.e. teasing or even fighting. Especially during times like these, will it be essential to...

I love being in the social services, empowering people to advocate for themselves is my forte`. I have run across many former clients, that expressed I am doing the community a dis-service by not working in the field. Then again when time permits I go to homeless meal sites and see what’s up, and if anyone could use some assistance accessing services. The goal I have always wanted for as long as I can remember is to pursue higher education. My associates is taking me 10 years, because life got in the way. In addition I was busy raising kids. As I have added more life experiences it became clear major goals should be geared towards getting into Social Services. I kept a goal list visible; as the years went on. To keep my dream close, and my goals in perspective, I volunteered at any agency in the field. I am interested in taking assessments and exploring my goals. In career workshops, and here in college I took the Jung Typology Assessment. The results came out ENFP (Extraversion, Intuition, Feeling, and Perceiving). This test is compatible with my career choice working in the social services. I get my energy, and become emotionally recharged by being with people. I value compassion, empathy, and understanding. Critical Incidence

...Case for Workplace Critical Incident Response…’ states ‘Critical incidents are sudden, unexpected, often life-threatening time-limited events that can inhibit an individual’s capacity to respond adaptively’ (Attridge et al 2010). If not tended to correctly such incidents can have a very negative affect on the individual’s experience, whether it being employee or a customer. In his book ‘Critical Incidents in Teaching’, David Tripp writes, ‘Incidents happen, but critical incidents are produced by the way we look at a situation: a critical incident is an interpretation of the significance of a situation’ (Tripp, 1993). Whether good or bad, when critical incidents take place in the work environment they can serve as training and development for other members of staff. As part of their research to find out the effects of webpages on customer satisfaction, Wang et al used critical incidents technique (CIT) in order to compare in-store customer experiences to that of those customers using the website. Their chosen restaurant was TGIF. To carry out the CIT, a front door intercept interview process was carried out where customers had to recall their TGIF experiences in the previous six months (Wang et al, 2004). Customers taking part in the study were required to answer two main questions. These were: 1. “Of the TGI Fridays you have eaten in during the last six month, please think about if there was any service that you were dis/satisfied with 2. “Please tell us exactly what happened...
