...Wind in a Box cover a wide variety of topics The poems in this book cover a vast array of topics and emotions, but they all have one thing in common, they all are colored by Terrance Haye’s experiences and his perception of the world. In the two poems, “Girl in the Woods” and “Wind in the Box”, Terrance Hayes tells the story of two victims of traumatic experiences and their response to that experience. In the first poem, “Girl in the Woods”, the story teller describes the story of a girl who catches a ride home with some of her friends and ends up getting raped. After being raped, the girl is brought home and does nothing to her attackers. In the second poem, “Wind in the Box”, the speaker of the poem contemplates how he feels after killing someone that wronged him. Both poems make references to traumatic experiences. These two poems are different because of the way that the subject of the poem reacts; in the first poem the subject takes no action against her attackers while in the second poem the subject kills his enemy. Both poems have a clear meaning: while traumatic experiences happen in life, different people respond very differently. Hayes is a poet that has the great talent of conveying the emotions from a traumatic experience very effectively. He paints the picture of the experience using many different tools in his poetry. These tools include Hayes’ theme that different people respond to situations differently is echoed not only in these two poems, but in the many of...

...DEATH SCENARIO PSY225 – POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY ALISHA FRANK MAY 4, 2015 For this paper I was asked to read a death scenario provided and to explain the way I felt whilst reading and immediately following. The scenario was that of a being trapped in a burning building. I was told to imagine that I was visiting a friend on the twentieth floor of an apartment building. While sleeping I was awoken in the middle of the night to the sounds of frantic screams and the intense smell of smoke. The first thing the scenario describes is that you run to the door and immediately burn yourself on the door knob, you then grab a blanket and manage to open the door only to find that flames and smoke come pouring in. The only window in the room is basically painted shut and you collapse to the floor realizing that this is the end. In those final agonizing moments knowing that this is the end, how would you handle those final moments and how would you feel about your life up to this point. In reading the scenario the first emotion that hit me was that of anxiety. I was not necessarily feeling anxiety about the fact that I would inevitably die in the situation but anxiety about what my family would feel with my dying. It made me feel sorrowful. I imagine the things that my loved ones would experience after this type of scenario and also the things that I would not be present for in their future lives. I would want my husband to mourn my loss but I would also want him to be able to move on...

...REACTION PAPER The seminar held by group entitled “Lock and Load: Military Nursing” was appealing because it creates awareness unto us regarding this field in nursing. I like the way the group organized the said seminar. The members of the group have their individual task to do as the seminar goes on. The prayer that was led by one of its member made the start of the seminar in good atmosphere. Even the singing of our national anthem was nice. The creativity of the group was shown with the way they arrange and decorated the rooms were the seminar was held. It was simple but very attractive to the eye of the audience. The only thing that I noticed that was quite not good was the seminar wasn’t smooth flowing. There are unwanted interruptions that cause the audience to wait. I commend the speakers for they did their best in leading the said seminar but I noticed that there were quite some time that they’ve forgotten the next thing to do that causes another delay to the continuity of the seminar. But if I will be asked if it was successful or not, for me it is definitely a successful one. The speaker has a good poise and I noticed that the audience really listened well unto what the speaker is saying. I also salute the group for having such a admirable speaker with her experience in the said field, she was able to discuss in a good way the experiences she had and the things we must consider before we decide to enter a certain field of nursing. I was amazed with how dedicated...

...How do I . . . Write a Reflection? Why reflective writing? Reflection offers you the opportunity to consider how your personal experiences and observations shape your thinking and your acceptance of new ideas. Professors often ask students to write reading reflections. They do this to encourage you to explore your own ideas about a text, to express your opinion rather than summarise the opinions of others. Reflective writing can help you to improve your analytical skills because it requires you to express what you think, and more significantly, how and why you think that way. In addition, reflective analysis asks you to acknowledge that your thoughts are shaped by your assumptions and preconceived ideas; in doing so, you can appreciate the ideas of others, notice how their assumptions and preconceived ideas may have shaped their thoughts, and perhaps recognize how your ideas support or oppose what you read. Types of Reflection Experiential Reflection: Popular in professional programs, like business, nursing, forensics and education, reflection is an important part of making connections between theory and practice. When you are asked to reflect upon experience in a placement, you do not only describe your experience, but you evaluate it based on ideas from class. You can assess a theory or approach based on your observations and practice and evaluate your own knowledge and skills within your professional field. This opportunity to take the time to think ...

...contributions to the overall project and report. We are grateful to Status of Women Canada for funding this project and for the continued sponsorship of the Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres. We also thank the members of our Advisory Committee for pushing and challenging us throughout this project. We thank the women who facilitated focus groups and helped us contact the women in this study. Finally, this report would not be possible without the contributions of the women who told us about their experiences. © 2004 Centre for Research on Violence Against Women and Children ISBN# 0-9688655-3-4 1 “To understand violence, we have to examine both the personal experience and the terrain of that experience.” Dr. Yasmin Jiawani This report is built on the personal experiences of women who have experienced workplace harassment, but their stories are also about the “terrain” or the context of those experiences. In drawing out the commonalities of their experiences, we have begun to shed light on the terrain. We must transform the terrain if women are to have equality and safety in their workplaces. 2 We dedicate this report to Theresa Vince whose death in 1996 changed the views of many people in Ontario about sexual and workplace harassment. Her tragic and untimely death showed us that workplace harassment can no longer be easily dismissed as a trivial problem. Fundamentally, the goal of this report is to prevent any other woman from losing her ...

...Paper Seven Topic 1 Epicurus ethical beliefs start with what ethics is, the matter of choosing certain things and avoiding others. For example one should choose to help someone when they are being physically harmed, and on the other hand one should avoid eating rotten meat because it will make them sick. Epicurus believes that the ultimate goal in life is to achieve pleasure, which according to him is the absence of pain. When one is not experiencing pain, they must be experiencing pleasure. Unlike the Cyrenaics, Epicurus embraces both types of pleasures, katastematic and kinetic, in both the body and the soul. Katastematic pleasure is the pleasure experienced while being in a state, such as being free from pain, and free of annoyance. Kinetic pleasure is the pleasure experienced while performing an act, such as eating, or having sex. People who things such as steal, rape, and generally bad acts, are punished with physical pain and it is viewed by non followers of Epicurus as the worst form of pain. But since the body is only effected by the present Epicurus says that pain of the soul is the greatest form of pain since it is effected by the past the present and the future. A cut will only hurt until it is healed, a hurt feeling or a bad memory will continue to hurt into the future and the pain of the feeling will not fade with time. If pleasure is happiness, and pain is unhappiness, then happiness is the absence of pain. Epicurus says...

...Comparison & Contrast Essay Living at home and living away from home as students (during the higher education studies) Millions of students are often faced with the question of whether it is better to live at home or to go abroad and hence away from home for the period of their studies. Many would probably intuitively say that leaving home is an effort that is not necessary since the same opportunities for one’s study are often given where one lives, thus at the home city or home place. However, there are a number of advantages that can be found about the same decision. To begin with, living at home while studying means being close to family, friends and colleagues one knows, likes, and loves. It is simple, convenient and beneficial to keep and foster those relations. In fact, most friendships are built in the environment one grew up in, went to school, or worked. Hence, staying home during the studies provides the possibility for spending more enjoyable time with these friends and family members. This means that one can go out for a drink with friends after the university or college, have a dinner or enjoy a movie at the cinema together. More importantly however, apart from spending the good times together, very often study-related problems occur. This could mean to have troubles with a lecturer who does not grade fairly or fellow students who do not treat someone appropriately, i.e. teasing or even fighting. Especially during times like these, will it be essential to...

...Why is building a working knowledge of a subject critically important to the success of research writing? What is involved in this process and how can you, or should you, adapt this process to the online academic environment? Why, even as online students, is it not a good idea to consider a quick Google search good enough? When it comes to the importance of building working knowledge of a subject, it makes you have to search for the correct sources and make sure that you're getting all of the correct facts for your research papers. For my personal experience, the process is to do your normal searches, but when you click and look at a link I look for the author of said article or website I'm researching, and making sure that they are a credible source (Dr. PHD, etc.) or if they're from a trust worthy company with a solid knowledge background. A "good" Google search is not the best idea, because there are sites that claim they know their stuff, but in actuality, their facts are either incorrect or made up. Their facts may in fact be correct, but for a different subject that their article is not even about. There are also many sites that can be changed and altered by anyone. There's so many websites that anyone can change because literally everyone has access to change the information to whatever they please, so you never know if the information is truly correct if anyone has permission to change the article. Which is why I look for credible sites with credible authors, companies...

...Nightmare A true education is an unnerving experience. Or at least it was for me. I still remember how enthusiastic I felt the day I started college to become a teacher of English. I was convinced I was going to succeed at college because I had the determination and willingness to do so. Everybody kept saying college years are "the best years of your life." But nobody said that college can turn out to be a nightmare and that failure becomes your worst enemy. The first year at the teaching training college I was like the sun in its full splendour. But as time went by grey clouds began to shut out the sun. Initially, I had a positive attitude towards college and I was full of excitement and anxiety. I had just finished High School in the United States and I was highly confident in myself. For years I have worked hard to be an outstanding student and have not experienced failure many times. To my horror, the years that followed were a constant struggle, full of ups and downs. More downs than ups, I must confess. At college I met my worst enemy: failure. I got easily discouraged by it. I even questioned if this profession was really what I wanted for the rest of my life. I also discovered that my confidence had dicreased tremendously to the point that I avoided participating in class discussions because I believed my words had no value at all. It seemed as if everything I did was wrong. Even if I had spent hours and hours working on a paper or a project the final result was a...

...some, writing essay and term papers is very challenging, impossible even. But with proper dedication and a competitive spirit, one can create a good quality of output. Others find it difficult to look for resources when making their term papers or writing their essay, especially when they have little or no knowledge at all about the subject matter. How then can students overcome these troubles? First things first. Organizing your time correctly can help you meet deadlines and finish your work ahead of time. Making a list of priorities could help. Write down all the things that you need to do within a specific deadline and rank which comes first and how important are they. Be determined to follow the plan you made and not waste a single second of your time. Ask help. If you find writing difficult, do not get so anxious and/or depressed. There are plenty of resources where you can get ideas and knowledge about what to write. One most effective way is browsing through archives and libraries, whether online or offices. They are of great help to everyone. They not only help you work with your assignment but also give you more knowledge about the world and gain much useful experiences. Asking help from more experienced people is also one great way of being successful. What books cannot teach you, people can. Often, we have questions whose answers cannot be found in books, but can only be taught by experience. But that doesn't mean you have to experience them; you do...
