Explain why Sears or Wal-mart cannot effectively create a trendy counterculture image.
In my opinion, Sears or Wal-mart cannot effectively create a trendy counterculture image for a couple of reasons. They are well known and both are big retail box stores who advertise in several markets advertising their products and others. Their products are neither unique nor exclusive. Sears and Wal-mart caters to all kinds of groups of people. Their agenda is to offer quality items at cheaper price; they cannot effective produce trendy counterculture image due to price and mass production. I feel that Sears doesn't want to create a "trendy, counter-culture image." Appealing to the counter-culture will turn off their main customer base, which tends to be mostly the parents and grandparents of those who would appreciate a trendy, counter-culture image. . Wal-mart shoppers are looking for a bargain when they go shopping at their stores. Wal-mart is known for their lower price by using a nice pitch called the Roll back Price. They also buy their merchandise in bulk as oppose to small quantities. They also are combined with Sam’s Club that also caters to larger families that like to purchase things in bulks and also getting a good price. While Urban Outfitters buy their merchandise in smaller quantities and there items are priced higher which is why they can create a trendy counterculture.
Could the big box stores sell merchandise identical to Urban Outfitters? Explain your answer.
Big box stores could try to replicate Urban Outfitters merchandise, but it wouldn’t be the same feel or style. This is because some of their merchandise is private label, produced by them for sale in their stores only, and the company would not allow that stuff to be sold in other stores. Also, Urban Outfitters sells labels that are hip and they are selective about where they sell their stuff. They probably wouldn’t do business with a chain like Sears or Wal-mart. If some of their merchandise showed up in Sears or Wal-mart, Urban Outfitters would move onto designing different merchandise.
Identify at least three reasons why exclusivity is valuable.
Exclusivity is valuable because it puts your business at a competitive advantage; if you have the exclusive product, which means it is well known and well trusted and that means it is harder for competitors to compete. Market shares is also valuable when speaking of exclusivity because when you have merchandise that’s high in demand you’re get high profits off of that item. With higher profits market shares will rise. Another good reason for exclusivity is reputation. Many customers would be willing to pay more to a company they believe has the best reputation, with excellent customer service playing a major part.
Senk says that shopping is largely entertainment. Do you agree or disagree with him? Explain your answer.
I totally agree with Senk because shopping brightens up my day. It’s a time that I can use to relax with my friends, catch up with the new trends and fashions and also meet new people. When I go shopping it feels like I’m on a mission to find the bargains that are available. I already know what stores to go in and what items I can purchase at that particular store. I can shop for hours at a time, especially if I’m with my girlfriends, going from one store to another and enjoying every minute of it. Even though shopping can be considered entertainment, for some people it can be very addictive. “For most people, it means new clothes for work, or a small gift for a friend or family. For others, however, shopping is much more than an enjoyable pastime, and in some cases, it is a real and destructive addiction that can turn into a financial disaster.” (Hatfield, n.d., para 2).
Other forms of entertainment can be done from anywhere due to access to so many methods of technology. We can now relax and have the pleasure of shopping from home. There are now networks that are exclusive to shopping such as QVC and HSN. This type of shopping can be very entertaining and addictive especially when you are bored at home and watching television and you’re not the type to go out in crowds. This is how these networks grow. Since we have the internet, there is internet shopping. This type of shopping can be access anywhere and anytime from work, school, or home via a computer or phone. Some people find it very entertaining to bargain shop. Bargain shopping can be found on websites such as Penny Bids and Ebay where they can bid on items. This type of shopping provides a rush for some consumers because they are getting thrill of competition. Shopping for yard sales, either in the neighborhood or at flea markets would be another form of shopping. On the weekends, you will find several people out salvaging other unwanted items.
