...consist of exploratory research and descriptive market research. In the first step, we will use exploratory research to determine the problem or issue. It will consist of qualitative analysis of secondary data where we will try to find out the main issues that McDonald’s is facing. Secondary qualitative Research would also be used to find out what McDonald’s is serving now in terms of beverages, and what other premium beverage restaurants (such as CCD, Starbucks) offer. We will be using direct qualitative research (focus group and depth interviews) to better define and understand the problem. We will then try to compare seemingly different companies like McDonald’s and coffeehouses such as CCD and Starbucks. The focus would be on determining what customers’ value in their favourite coffeehouses so that we could translate that experience into the experience of buying beverages at McDonald’s. In second step, we will be performing a descriptive market research. We will conduct a survey focussing on the topics which will come out of the exploratory research. We will be using a screener question first to find whether the respondent is qualified for the survey and to check if the participants of the survey can compare local coffeehouses and their experience at McDonald’s. Finally in order to analyze the data, we will be using the quantitative analysis (e.g., statistics and regression analysis) to test the various hypotheses which will be designed after the exploratory study to come...

...This article was selected for this critique because it is exploratory in nature and utilizes a lot of information from previous researchers to make it conclusion. The knowledge base that is presented in the paper is wide hence it offers insight into the problem area. Summary The study above has been set out in an exploratory design. It relies on secondary data gathered from previous studies. In this study, the energy expenditure was investigated through calculations using the heart rate based energy expenditure. The calculations were estimated in 37 infants through estimates across 500 repeated measures. The infants used were selected from two medical centers between 2007and 2008. At the time of the study, the infants were 28 days old and in the incubator, the infants were born at 37 weeks gestational age. From the experiments, it was determined that the preterm infants use more energy during the following seven human behaviors: sucking, salute, sneezing, grimace, fist, gape face and diffusion squirm. Grimace is the common behavior among the infants when they are faced with stressful stimulations hence they use more energy...

...This journal paper takes a critical look at the hands-on child-computer interaction. Antle and her associates conducted an exploratory comparative design study with children aged 7 to 10 years old to investigate the ways in which different interface styles (physical /graphic/tangible user interfaces ---PUI/ GUI/ TUI) affect their interactional behaviors and the subsequent development of spatial problem solving skills in a jigsaw puzzle task. The conversation concerning the potential for TUIs in education or learning seems to be growing, but the research investing the benefits of these systems for this context have been inconclusive. Additionally, little research has been done to gain a better understanding of the reasons TUIs may contribute positively to the experience of children during different classes of learning activities. The author hopes to explore how PUI, TUI and GUI interaction styles facilitate the development of spatial thinking, mental visualization, spatial reasoning, metacognition, and communication skills. Additionally, the author found that the current state of methodology concerning video analysis and coding was lacking to properly answer the research questions...

...Exploratory research: The chief purpose of exploratory research is to reach a better understanding of the research problem. This includes helping to identify the variables which should be measured within the study. When there is little understanding of the topic it is impossible to formulate hypotheses without some exploratory studies. For example, crop residues such a straw are high in lignin (a wood-like substance) and low in nutrients. This makes them a poor animal feed since the lignin acts against digestibility and the low nutrient content means poor food value. However, if treated in a strong alkali, plus a little heat, the lignin breaks down and the nutrient content increases. A company was established to exploit this technology and did so successfully for 4 seasons. After this period sales began to slow down. Three other manufacturers had entered the market by this time. The company, Animal Feed Systems, did not know whether the whole industry had slowed down or if only their product was suffering. Nor did they know if the problem was temporary in that perhaps the market comprised of "early adopters" had been saturated but it was only a matter of time before other farmers began to buy their systems when they saw how well they worked. It was also possible that if a problem did exist it could lie in any one of a number of areas: animal populations might be declining, distributors may not be promoting the product aggressively, customers may be experiencing difficulties in...

...critical questions and considerations for the analysis section Analysis (October - November) The purpose the analysis section is to understand where and why there are gaps in the system. These gaps could be organizational, technical, or both. To better understand the current state the analysis section should be divided into two parts: organization exploration and technical analysis. Estimated Timeframe: October-November Organization analysis: in this section of the analysis we want to examine why or why not employees might chose to adopt a program. To approach this question Boston Scientific should model their analysis off of traditional Market Research methods. The most relevant research types are: · Exploratory Research – the purpose of exploratory research is to determine if there is an opportunity for change. o Secondary data collection is an inexpensive means to better understand the scope of a problem. This might include researching and evaluating successful idea-share website (i.e. TedTalks, Vice, Kickstarter, SkillsShare). The Boston Scientific team could draw some meaningful insight from this type of research o Interviews with employees might help researchers better...

...Was the research well designed? Was it a good research? This case study detailed stages of research conducted by Starbucks, Bank One and Visa on the Duetto Card and overall the researches in all stages are well designed and are good examples of research. Firstly, the purposes of research, from understanding the perception of dual-function card concept, understanding user preference and finally to satisfactory level examination, are clearly defined. Secondly, the researches processes are detailed such as the steps to acquire participants, sampling method and the representativeness. Other researchers for card loyalty program can repeat similar research accordingly. Research design is thoroughly planned. For example, at the concept testing period, the feedbacks gathered from focus groups of existing customers is more relevant than asking the general public. Another good example is Bank One directly use observable business metrics to provide the return on marketing investment. Moreover, ethical standard is addressed during the research period. The intercept study outside the Starbucks store is discarded since they think they don’t own that space. Knowing the limitations of feedbacks, in the product optimization study, Bank One has compared the research results to norms that have resulted from more than 200 similar concept studies. On the other hand, for the quantitative online survey, the sample size should have been larger in order to give more reliable results. All three parties...

...Online Buying Behaviour EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The project focused on finding out the Online Buying Behaviour of consumers between the age group of 18-30 years. The stated objective of the study was further broken down to secondary objectives which aimed at finding information regarding the popular product categories, frequency of purchases, average spending, factors affecting buying decision process etc. The exploratory research was carried out with 20 respondents with a set of 12 open ended questions. The exploratory findings helped us in determining the key factors which needed to be further explored for research. The secondary research questionnaire designed had 9 questions and was administered to 100 respondents. Each of the questions was designed to satisfy at least one of the secondary objectives of the research. The response format was of a mixed variety which also helped in better determination of outcomes. Post data reduction, Cross tabulation was used for analyzing the causal relationship between different pairs of factors. ANOVA was also applied to a pair of factors. The Regression Analysis between the dependent variable “Average Amount spent per purchase made online” and the independent variables of Frequency of Purchase of products and services online, owning a Credit Card, Marital Status, Education and Age, was done.. Then, Cluster Analysis was done on the data and based on the responses; we could divide the respondents in three clearly distinct groups. We named...

...Preparing to Conduct Business Research Team B Brandie Andrews, Dayra Wright, Dustin Cornell, Kasey Otto, Lecia Kilpatrick, Mercedes London RES/351 September 22, 2012 Dr. Deborah Bacon Wal-Mart is one of America’s largest bargain stores. They are well known for their low prices that has set them apart from their competition for over 50 years. Historically, they have faced sagging growth that has pushed them to find ways to distinguish themselves from their competition. Price, depending on the economy, is a concern that can be quickly forgotten for American consumers. However, regardless of the economic climate, many consumers are willing to pay more for appearance, less overcrowded aisles, and shorter lines. To understand the causes of sagging growth, loss of market share to be able to combat it. It is important develop strong research questions and hypotheses. It is also critical to understand variables, ethical considerations, thoroughly understand the significance, scope, and feasibility of developing good business research. Asking strategic questions will help Wal-Mart develop the questions that they need to overcome market challenges. Products are changing and upgrading every day to the newest items to older ones with new features. What Wal-Mart needs to do is keep a consistent watch of the new products coming out in the grocery and retail segments so that they can provide their existing and new customers what they want. Will discounts and package deals online...

...Chapter 5 5. There is an advantage to stating the hypothesis both in the null and the alternate; it adds clarity to our thinking about what we are testing. Explain. The null hypothesis is set so that the alternate hypothesis becomes testable. When the observed Z value is greater than or equal to the critical Z value for a given confidence level (usually 95 percent), then we know that we ought to accept the alternate hypothesis. If, however, the critical Z value is more than the observed Z value for a given level of confidence, we would be inclined not to reject the null but to reject the alternate. Setting up the null thus helps us to understand that though the null hypothesis itself is not testable, it helps to decide whether we should accept or reject the alternate. 6. Develop a conceptual model for the scenario below. Incidence of smoking in movies has started to increase again, after having declined for several decades. According to the National Cancer Institute smoking is seen in at least three out of four contemporary boxoffice hits. What’s more, identifiable cigarette brands appeared in about one-third of all movies in 2008. Exposure to smoking in movies is an important predictor of adolescent smoking initiation: smoking in movies has been shown to affect adolescents’ intentions to start smoking. In turn, the intentions to start smoking are determined by a more positive attitude toward smoking after seeing a film character smoke. Recent research has revealed that the relationship...

...RES/351 Week 4 February 25, 2013 State which type of research design— exploratory, descriptive, or causal—is appropriate for the following examples? You also need to explain why you choose what you did, tying the example into the concept of the chosen design. Each question is worth 8 points. The correct design is worth 4 points, a clear and correct explanation (50+ words) of why you choose what you choose is worth 4 points. Show me you understand research designs. The goal of this research is to discover the real nature of the problem and to suggest new possible solutions or new ideas. • Exploratory With exploratory research we look into the source of a particular problem and gain a better understanding of what caused. This help designing a solution to better solution the problem. A food manufacturer wants to know the demographics of people who purchase organic foods. • Descriptive With this design the manufacturer would study and observe the people and their purchasing behaviors. This research is done indirection with the manufacturer not influencing the outcome of the research. A scientist wanted to find out what animals lived the longest, how long they lived, and what environmental characteristics were that the animals lived in. • Causal In this research the Causal Design would be most appropriate it would involve laboratory experiments as well as field experiments. Discovering which variables affect the other...

...1) Client A: For Client A I would use the exploratory research as my research design. Exploratory Research entails a very informal research method, in order to gain more background information about the problem. In this case it is said “In these situations we know immediately the problem is that we don’t know what the problem is. There are many possible causes for this slippage.” After gaining their little knowledge of information they have on the cause of the market share to slip 15%, it is clear that this case would be an exploratory research. Also I would use a hypothesis in order to speculate the decline in market share in the past 12 months. Client B: For Client B I would use the Descriptive research design. Descriptive research mostly describes the answers to questions of who, what, where, when, and how. In this case Client B gives us enough information to work from. I would use the cross-sectional study. The cross-sectional study, measures in more of a large population and sample sizes. This study can be beneficial by narrowing down the time period associated with each campaign in each region, and the product category as well. Client C: For Client C I would use the Casual Research method. With Casual research, it mostly focuses on determining what will cause a change in consumer satisfaction, gain in market share, or increases in sales. In this case Client C is trying to determine what factors of their package design (size, shape, color, texture, etc.)to increase...
