...Gettier Problem. Since the standard account of knowledge was essentially done away with, philosophers have been in search of the best way to solve the Gettier problem. Alvin Goldman in particular has published many papers detailing his thoughts on the matter. “A Causal Theory of Knowing” was the first in a series of works in which Goldman sought a theory that could handle Gettier’s cases. Unfortunately, Goldman’s own causal theory was undermined by his and Carl Ginet’s fake barn case. The Ginet-Goldman fake barn case first appeared in Goldman’s “Discrimination and Perceptual Knowledge”. It describes a boy, Henry, who is traveling through the countryside and sees what he believes to be a barn. Unbeknownst to Henry, the area he is in is actually full of façades of barns. It is only by sheer coincidence that the barn Henry has pointed out is a real barn and not a façade. As a result of this, we become hesitant to say that Henry “knows” he saw a barn. (“Discrimination and Perceptual Knowledge” 86-87) We know that the fake barn case undermines Goldman’s causal theory of knowing, Goldman says as much himself. In 1979, he published “What...

...The Power of Memory It never seizes to amaze me how different colors, tastes, smells, and sounds can take us back to an event in our lives long forgotten. Its astounding how we can recall events with such clarity, though sometimes our memories are tainted with the hue of the dominant emotion we may have felt at the time. We look at our present through the memories of our past experiences. Scanning through different stations on the radio, it seems like all the stations are playing the same songs. A particular tune catches my attention and I wait to hear the lyrics. Its Barbara Striesand singing one of her hits from the seventies, the song’s title is ‘memories’. Speaking of which, my mind drifts off to the time when I was four years old and unable to sleep at night, I had sneaked out of my room to see whether anyone was up, to find my parents sitting with dimmed lights, listening to this same song. I remember thinking then that they were being romantic, and I was not supposed to be there. Feeling left out; I quickly started to complain of a fake stomachache and how I needed someone to read me a story to be able to sleep. It was a fruitless endeavor, I was sent to bed - no story - just a lecture on how all the good children must be asleep and I was still up. I relate the story to my brother, who is complaining about why I’m listening to such ancient music and should put his ‘hip hop’ station on. He changes the station. My thoughts are rudely interrupted by...

...drawing parallel from training techniques used by an actor. The primary source from which an actor can draw to create the emotional world of their character is their own life. In an analogous way, an authentic leader must draw from the experiences in their own life. This involves ‘connecting with themselves’ and drawing from the emotional memories and from key events of one’s life. To be a great leader, the quality to recall past experiences from the personal life that trigger certain emotions can evoke the feeling of authenticity in your audience. A growing number of studies point to the importance of leaders expressing their vulnerabilities in order to fully engage with and establish trust from followers. By revealing vulnerability followers can more readily identify with leaders, resulting in more positive and influential relationships between leaders and followers. Let’s take the example of President Obama, who I have always considered to be a good and genuine leader. He comes across as a person who is speaking from experience such that he truly understands and this helps us connect with his message. Similarly, by invoking memories that trigger the emotion I want to portray, I don’t have to be a good...

...For example, there is no introduction like the difference between the Flat and the Point, or the outrageous things that Jimmy did like he jumped down to the rail when trains were in operation to get his ball back. Yet Clint Westwood still demonstrations that Jimmy was the most audacious one by telling he suggested his friends to steal a car, to write names on municipal property and didn’t call the fake police sir. Another difference is the place where police find the body of Katie Marcus, which is the bear cage in the movie version, instead of the drive-in screen in the novel. Jimmy and his daughter have memories there. Jimmy had brought his family there for the Shakespeare’s show once before, although other family members cannot understand the beauty of the drama, Katie enjoyed the show a lot (151). All those details are pruned. However, the most notable variation must be the screenwriter changes the reason why Dave was taken by the fake cops. In the original story, it was because Sean, Dave and...

...This year, Mercedes Benz is offering a new four-door sedan known as the CLA. They released commercials targeted for Super Bowl audiences that really caught my attention. Neither commercial is about the car's performance, ride comfort, or its gas mileage. Initially, I could not understand my attraction to the first commercial but then it hit me… nostalgia. It was hard to put my finger on because that nostalgia lay wrapped in a superficial layer of modernity. I found it entertaining and found that it conveyed a message to me. As for the second commercial, I was left a little confused and not very impressed. For the advertisers to hit the mark so clearly on one commercial but miss the mark so widely on the second, did not make sense. The commercial titled "Soul" begins in the timeworn French Quarter café, The Napoleon House, which according to their website got its name when, "Nicholas Girod, was mayor of New Orleans from 1812 to 1815. He offered his residence to Napoleon in 1821 as a refuge during his exile." just before his death in 1821, "Napoleon never made it, but the name stuck"(Unknown 2013). The dining room is filled with the primitive, Candomblé rhythm of the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil", pouring in torrents from the early 1950s Seeburg Select-O-Matic jukebox, as the actor peers out a window admiring a billboard of the new Mercedes Benz CLA. Even though the main actor in the first commercial is a young man, I believe that it becomes part of the...

...visit and make time for everyone, but turns out, not everyone wanted to make time for me. She and I became friends when we were sixteen. We hit it off immediately when she started working at the same grocery store as me. She had a car, so we’d always go out to dinner or drive around town looking for an adventure. We went to concerts together all the time. We’d drive hours to meet our favorite celebrities and watch them perform. We took each other to get tattoos and piercings. We did everything together. Then I left for college. Even if you don’t realize it, you’re so much busier in college. You can’t just drop everything and go to a concert or go to the movies, or go get a new tattoo. You’ve either got studying to do or you’re just too poor because you can’t work as much. If you have friends who aren’t in college, they don’t understand as much. Yeah, they’re probably busy working and doing their own thing, but they can’t truly understand because they’re not in your shoes. I tried my best to keep in touch with my friend for a while. Sure, there were times we’d go for a while without talking. At one point,...

...profiles found in these platforms and this show that numerous amount people out there are quite active on social media. Lately, there have been issues that came up regarding fake identities on social media. Fake identity is intentionally forging your own identity or others for certain reasons especially in terms of personal. In 2010, a documentary titled “Catfish” brought a true story based on fake profiles on Facebook (Peterson, 2013) . New Schulman fall in love with a beautiful young woman’s Facebook picture and her voice over the phone, which turned out to be a middle-aged wife and mother. When asked the reason of her act, she mentioned that she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and she felt lonely. Schulman decided to turn the documentary into a show and reveal all online relationship fraud to create awareness on fake identities used on social media. In my opinion, fake identities should not be used on social media because it is a crime offence, it is not an ethical act to perform and much worst it creates unnecessary troubles for teenagers as they are the ones who are extremely active on social media. Faking identity is a serious crime offence in all the countries. Sometime back in 2011, local United States online mail (Stevens, 2011) reported news of a 41-year-old woman who created a fake Facebook profile of her ex-boyfriend who is a narcotics detective. The women posted some personal information, photos and several false posts involving his...

...23 September 2015 Risks Worth Taking? A Reflection on the Effects of Memoirs The primary purpose of my research paper is to present a cross-section of the current conversations taking place around the way memoirs affect the writers who publish them. Based on my research, it appears that the effects tend to involve emotional and psychological consequences, as well as legal troubles in some instances. The discovery of this conversation helped me to refine my research topic into the question, “Do the benefits of publishing a memoir outweigh the risks of their effects for writers?” This research explores the positive and negative effects of memoirs on their writers to determine whether or not the risks are worth the rewards. Although writing a memoir can result in lawsuits and family discord, it more often proves to be therapeutic and can be the starting point of a nonfiction writer's career. What if I told you that memoirs are incredibly important to our society, because they document the human experience in such an honest way? Although they are valuable, they can also be risky. One key issue is that a memoir’s admissions risk causing major drama for writers, including legal trouble. In addition, they can be a catalyst for burning bridges with former employees. They can also potentially destroy long-term personal relationships. In this paper, I work to discover if it is worth all the drama to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. As I began my research...

Conduct a stakeholder analysis and make recommendations for an improved outcome, using the same resources. ANSWER I was overwhelmed while doing the internet news search to find an example of business that has abused its power. The search came up with so many examples that it made me realize that probably all the business abuse their position in some or the other way. There were many example to choose from but I chose “Corporate accounting scandal at Satyam “, which is also infamously called as India’s Enron. The reason why I selected this particular company is that I had my cousin brothers and sisters working for this company and this scandal affected our families in a big way. The background Scandals are like an iceberg, they represent the only visible catastrophic failure. ...Adult Fake in a Fake World. At the age of 19, I understood the difficulties of the real world. I was coming back home from college when I received word from my dad that I had to go live in the United States with my mom because my brother was sick. Although my brother was born with muscular dystrophy (a degenerative muscle disease), my parents tried to give us a kind of life like a normal family. My dad was the kind of dad that aimed to make us happy by giving us all we wanted. It was just a matter of asking for shall we say a curious unique toy, the latest novelty or a brand new wardrobe and my dad made it happen. It was until that day when my dad told me that I was not going to live in Mexico that I became confused. It was like if during my whole life I was living a dream. It was like all that I knew was about to change. I used to have what I would call the “perfect life”. At the age of 19, I was living the life I had always wanted and was considered an adult in Mexico; however, my actions did not show that I was an adult. I was in my fourth semester of college and I had a lot of friends, I didn’t have to work because my dad could afford all the spending. I only had to worry about studying and to know where the partying would be at on the weekends. Also, my dad had just bought me a new car to go to college and my relationship with my new girlfriend was going well. In regards to money I didn’t have to worry because my dad and my two older sisters gave it to me. Everything...

Encouraged by the obvious attachment shown by fans, My Chemical Romance will release their final album, May Death Never Stop You, which is a compilation of greatest hits from all of their previous albums. "I consider “Fake Your Death” to be the “last MCR song," and to me, it is absolutely the final realization that this is the last time I will get to preform with my band. It's sort of a gut-wrenching realization in that respect." He continued, "During the time that I was writing "Fake Your Death," I didn't realize that this song would end up being a eulogy for the band. I think, internally, I must have because I felt a sort of sadness and loss wash over me upon hearing the words being played back to me. It's a really self-aware, honest song and I'm very proud of...

The child I interview what name Mikey. He is a seven-year-old male who is in the second grade. When asked what his favorite childhood memory was he replied, I don’t know, so I told him to think about it for a little bit, and then I will come back and ask some questions about it. When I went back to question about fifteen mins later, he then said, “I would have to say my favorite time ever was when me, my mom, my sister, my brother and my stepdad all went out to Chucky Cheese.” I then proceeded with asking him, “when he had gone to Chuckey Cheeses?” and he replied, “a long time ago.” I then proceeded to ask him where Chucky cheese is, and he said, “up by the mall.” After his response, I asked what mall he was referring to, and his reply was, “I do not know.” I then asked him “why it was his favorite memory,” and he said, “because playing all the games and getting tickets was fun.” I then concluded my interview with the question, “how do you play the games and get tickets?” His reply was, “Duh, you have to pay for tokens and earn tickets by playing the games and win prizes from the tickets.” When I was all finished with the questioning, he proceeded on his way back to a game he was playing.
