...He is known for his critique of Cartesian Dualism. Ryle objects to Descartes’ claim of the common understanding and approach to the mind-body relationship. Stating the belief of the mind-body are two separate entities is a category mistake. The category mistake is to believe that there exist something beyond the physical realm. Mental state is a representation of the physical state. Ryle refers to the idea of mind-body existence as the “the Dogma of the Ghost Machine”. Ryle’s aim is to prove that the “Official Doctrine” is entirely false. Ryle states, “A foreigner visiting Oxford or Cambridge for the first time is shown a number of colleges, libraries, playing fields, museums, scientific departments and administrative offices. He then asks `But where is the University? I have seen where the members of the Colleges live, where the Registrar works, where the scientists experiment and the rest. But I have not yet seen the University in which reside and work the members of your University.” This is a prime demonstration of someone making a category mistake. The visitor at Oxford, presumably believed that the he only saw the physical infrastructure of Oxford, when in reality he saw the university as a whole. The mistake is that he believed there exist more than the campus in Oxford. There was no separation or other unit or...

...Introduction: What is the problem with the representation of the LGBTQ+ community in film? The main problem: that this is even a problem at all. The representation, or misrepresentation that is, has not gone unnoticed. “When gays and lesbians do appear on screen, it is more often than not in ways that uphold stereotypical notions, such as the ‘pansy’ male or the ‘hardboiled’ woman,” is how Mangin explains this dilemma. This statement holds truth, but it is only the beginning of addressing the problem. Society has deemed it necessary to discriminate against this community, instead of accepting them, and treating them how they should be treated; like normal people, since that is what they are, of course. unjust way the LGBTQ+ community...

...In this essay I want to examine how postmodernism is used throughout Don Delillo's White Noise and Caryl Churchill's Top Girls. Although each of the texts are very dissimilar they both concentrate on restrictions in society, yet open up a whole new perspective to what these oppressive values really do represent. Postmodern novels are known to be published after the Second World War. It was after the 19th century that modernism was introduced, where the constraints from society's values were rebelled against. However, in the last few decades, there is an evident change that had occurred. Modernism focuses upon values that are oppressing in society, such as class, politics, race and gender. Yet, postmodernism doesn't focus on these aspects in a way that is challenging them; it focuses more on a utopian idea of the world. It is where these constraints are not just acknowledged, but disregarded as they shouldn't seem to matter simply because boundaries in society shouldn't be an issue. Don Delillo's White Noise, was first published in 1984 and it looks into how the world is changing through the medium of popular culture, the media and most importantly, technology. The reader is exposed to this through the eyes of the protagonist, Jack Gladney who is a professor of Hitler studies in a university. A major theme that occurs throughout the novel is the subject of death. We see that Jack has a great fear of death. However, in one of Jacks lectures he unexpectedly confronts this fear by...

...Burkley 43). Nearly 1,200 high schools and 90 colleges in the United States use Native Americans as their school mascot (Chaney, Burke and Burkley 43). Throughout football games, pep-rallies, and other school related events, fans chant Native American war chants and dress in stereotypical cartoon-like costumes (Pewewardy 181). Although some people would argue that these symbols are intended to honor Native Americans, they often portray them in an inauthentic and clichéd manner (Chaney, Burke and Burkley 43). Because of this, the barbaric, wild, and savage mascots have become a representation of the Native American...

...obstacles and choices. We look for escapes and stress relievers. The media provides a false comfort away from those stresses. “Thus the predominant genres and modes of representation (news, chat show, soap opera) meet the needs and the desires for order of, and in, the everyday, and even in those areas of media production and consumption where it may be suggested that there is scope for both resistance and ambiguity (and there is evidence, for example, in popular music culture and in some online networks and bulletin boards that this is the case).” (Silverstone, R., 2002). It’s the media, producers and the fortune 500 companies that produce consumer goods and those companies that feed our imaginations with fallacies through “entertainment” television. i. Where the stereotypes are: “There are many formal fallacies, mistakes in reasoning that occur due to the structure of the argument (the fallacy of affirming the consequent is, therefore, a formal fallacy). There are also hundreds of informal fallacies.” (Mosser, 2010) i. Stereotypes and the media influence consumers with fallacies such as Slippery Slope, False Authority and Hasty Generalizations. ii. ...Optimism and Pessimism of Myths Myths are stories passed down from generations which surround our society and determine true or false concepts. A notion is established within a myth to indicate a specific story and idea. Well-known myths, such as the 'Myth of the Model Family' and the 'Myth of Education and Empowerment,' provide a representation of ideas that have exceeded the strength of time. These complex, yet simple, myths represent a diverse range of opinions within society since they've been molded and have transformed over the period of time. “Rereading America” offers different perspectives from a variety of authors regarding these particular myths. The opinionated narratives mentioned in the text prove that these common myths have the ability to influence society in many ways. Regardless of the variety of influence, the authors portray their viewpoints by displaying how the myths can form a common understanding among a people. While these myths create a...

The revised topic illustrates the mental stress and problems created from the model minority myth and cultural tensions. “[The Model Minority Myth] theory offered a promise of equality that could be achieved, not through political organization and community empowerment, but only through individual effort, cultural assimilation, and political accommodation.” (Robert Lee 268) The stereotypes characteristics of a hardworking immigrants, obedient members of society,...

...Cognitive Development Psychology 1000 Cognitive development has to do with the way humans understand and experience the world and deals with issues like memory, thinking and decision-making and concept comprehension. During the prenatal period, cognitive development is highly involved in physical development as the primary tool for cognition; the brain is still being developed. During the infant stage and early childhood, things like speaking, comprehension and object recognition occur. Thoughts about the world are simple, and judgments are made in an either/or ideas. Middle childhood brings the beginning of concrete and logical thinking, and adolescence brings about a phase where cognitive judgments are often overruled by feelings and impulses because of the body's rapidly changing physical and biological climate. Young adulthood is the human cognitive greatest time of development, as the capacity for quick and accurate memory, thought processing and information gathering function at the highest levels. Notions of the world, judgment and morals become more complicated and complex. During adulthood, humans get better at solving problems, although they begin to experience some signs of slow down with...

Eshbaugh School of Applied Human Sciences, University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa, USA Despite the prevalence of the disease, it appears that there may be a need for increased education for formal and family caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Today’s college students will be asked to fill both of these roles in the future. This study examined the level of knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease among college students. Two-hundred college students at a mid-sized midwestern university completed an online survey that included the Alzheimer’s Disease Knowledge Scale (Carpenter et al., 2009). Although most participants knew that people with Alzheimer’s remember things from the distant past better than more recent events, many college students were unfamiliar with risk factors and average life expectancy. Implications and recommendations for educational programs and curriculum are discussed. Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are significant health concerns affecting our older adult population (Sullivan & Muscat, 2007). As our population continues to age and our demography shifts to higher proportions of elders, the number of individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and dementia continues to increase. Although...

...Microsoft’s business model, in a nutshell, is to provide goods and services in the form of software and support to paying customers. One question that may be asked in this day an age is with the advances in cloud computing and Google’s “free” gadgets, will the traditional Microsoft’s business model come to an end? What will Microsoft’s business analysts do in order to change their business model? One can only imagine that it will need to be modeled and simulated first to avoid potentially expensive mistakes. I must start off by saying that before I started my Systems Modeling Theory online class through Strayer, I thought that it may just be one of the hardest classes to understand that I’ve ever taken throughout the course of my college career. I can say now after having completed the last nine weeks of class that I was correct. What’s hard, is not understanding the concepts of why businesses would use Excel models for their business growth but rather the actual use of Excel itself. With all of the bells and whistles an who’s-its and what’s-its that Excel provides for the Business Analyst professional, it’s extremely hard to get a clear view of just how powerful this software program really is. Enter Stephen G. Powell and Kenneth R. Baker’s “Management Science, The Art of Modeling with Spreadsheets” text book. This has proven to be a very good book for the beginning business professional who would like...

...that are born into poverty, and people that do not have determination, or set goals for themselves. The immigrants that come to America are also affected. There are always going to be obstacles for people with the hope of fulfilling this dream. The reality is, the American Dream is not something that is for everyone, nor is it something that just gets handed to you. It will most likely be more a dream than a reality for most people, and especially immigrants that come to America specifically for this idea that people have. This “dream” that people want to achieve is a long shot and takes so much time and work. The miracle stories of the American Dream are more rare than many of the citizens of America are led to believe. This gives people false hope that the same will happen to them at some point in their lives. In conclusion, the American Dream comes with many obstacles that people will have to face, and comes with many failures, so it is something to think about when one attempts to obtain the American...

Why I Think Women Are Paid Less From a functionalist perspective, financial inequality for women is a product of the traditional division in human societies. Men tend to take more instrumental (objectively rewarded) tasks such as wage earning and women attend to more expressive (subjectively rewarded) tasks such as those involved in child rearing. While both types of labor are functional for society's survival, the instrumental tasks, which the majority of are held by men, have always been more highly rewarded than the expressive tasks looked after by women. Men and women are taught these traditional roles and have tended to conform to their requirements. Functionalists point out that while gender roles and their accompanying inequalities have changed somewhat in industrialized societies, traditional arrangement...

...January 21, 2013, from http://www.history.com/topics/ancient-history We’ve been in the business of reinventing storytelling since 1984. We took history out of the history books, and we brought biography to life. For our viewers, we’ve invented new genres, told untold stories and broken barriers. For our partners, we’ve offered new networks, new audiences, and new ways for brands to talk to customers. Benton, J. R., & DiYanni, R. (2008 2005 1998). Arts and Culture (3rd ed.). Upper Saddle River, New Jersey: Prentice Hall. Offering an exploration of Western and World civilization's cultural heritage, this book is richly illustrated, beautifully designed and engaging. Readers move chronologically through major periods and styles–from prehistoric culture to 20th Century America–to gain insight into the achievements and ideas in painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, philosophy, religion, and music.
