John Maynard Keynes, 1st Baron Keynes CB FBA ([pic] /ˈkeɪnz/ kaynz; 5 June 1883 – 21 April 1946), was a British economist whose ideas have profoundly affected the theory and practice of modern macroeconomics, as well as the economic policies of governments. He greatly refined earlier work on the causes of business cycles, and advocated the use of fiscal and monetary measures to mitigate the adverse effects of economic recessions and depressions. His ideas are the basis for the school of thought known as Keynesian economics, as well as its various offshoots. He enjoyed his work at first, but by 1908 had become bored and resigned his position to return to Cambridge and work on probability theory, at first privately funded only by two Dons at the university – his father and the economist et it was not a successful one for him. Keynes's main interest had been in trying to prevent Germany's compensation payments being set so high it would traumatise innocent German people, damage the nation's ability to pay and sharply limit her ability to buy exports from other countries – thus hurting not just Germany's own economy but that of the wider world. Unfortunately for Keynes, conservative powers in the coalition that emerged from the 1918 coupon election were able to ensure that both Keynes himself and the Treasury were largely excluded from formal high-level talks concerning reparations. Their place was taken by the Heavenly Twins – the Judge Lord Sumner and the Banker Lord Cunliffe whose nickname derived from the "astronomically" high war compensation they wanted to demand from Germany. Keynes was forced to try to exert influence mostly from behind the

...Following the Band: Review of the Film Almost Famous Almost famous, written and directed by Cameron Crowe , is an endearing coming of age film that follows the adventures and experiences William Miller, of a teenage writer played by Patrick Fugit, as he follows an up and coming rock and roll band (Stillwater) in order to write a cover story for Rolling Stone Magazine in the early 1970's. William Miller is a bright-eyed and intelligent young high school student with a passion for both writing and rock music. Confined by an overly concerned and strict mother who has a irrational dislike for rock and roll music, William is desperate to break away and create a life for himself. William is determined it find an outlet and eventually lands a job writing album reviews for a local newspaper. Lester Bangs, an editor of Cream (a low-budget rock and roll magazine) played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, stumbles across William's album reviews and enjoys his work. Lester ends up getting ahold of William and offers him a job reporting on a Black Sabbath Concert. William excitedly accepts the offer, but is unable to gain access to the hugely popular Black Sabbath after the concert. Fortunately for William the members of the opening band, Stillwater, are very willing to be interviewed and provide him with enough material to write a solid report. William's piece on Stillwater catches the eye of an editor at Rolling Stone Magazine, Ben Fong-Torres ( played by Terry Chen ), who was so impressed by...

He said "Will you defeat them, your demons, and all the non-believers,  the plans that they have made?" "Because one day I'll leave you, A phantom to lead you in the summer, To join The Black Parade." When I was a young boy, My father took me into the city To see a marching band. He said, "Son when you grow up, would you be the saviour of the broken,  the beaten and the damned?" Sometimes I get the feeling she's watching over me. And other times I feel like I should go. And through it all, the rise and fall, the bodies in the streets. And when you're gone we want you all to know. We'll carry on, We'll carry on And though you're dead and gone believe me Your memory will carry on We'll carry on And in my heart I can't contain it The anthem won't explain it. A world that sends you reeling from decimated dreams Your misery and hate will kill us all. So paint it black and take it back Let's shout it loud and clear Defiant to the end we hear the call To carry on We'll carry on And though you're dead and gone believe me Your memory will carry on We'll carry on And though you're broken and defeated Your weary widow marches On and on we carry through the fears Ooh oh ohhhh Disappointed faces of your peers Ooh oh ohhhh Take a look at me cause I...

Examination of Elasticity of Demand and Market Structure Cece’s Famous BBQ Sauce is a homemade traditional sauce carefully made with the freshest ingredients. Southerners take great pride in barbecuing and there is a current debate as to who has the best BBQ sauce. There are a wide variety of BBQ sauces readily available to consumers and you can find them in any grocery store in the U.S. This describes a Perfect Competition structure; no single company can influence market price or market conditions. Although there are many different BBQ sauces, there are some companies more successful than others. In a Perfect Competition market structure there are no barriers to entry into or exit out the market. The most important thing that will set my sauce apart from another is its unique taste. Since there are many other companies selling the same product the market dictates the price. In this case, PIGS includes Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain. While not originally included in the group, Ireland has found its way into the mix, which is why the term PIIGS is more commonly used now. TUTORIALS: Macroeconomics All of these countries are part of the eurozone and have been grouped together with the unflattering acronym of a barnyard animal known for its proclivity to mud, dirt and not-so- pleasant smells. The term itself is not an official title, nor does it separately delineate these countries from the European Union (EU). The term became a convenient way for currency traders and global investors to group these countries together. It has lived on as a club, of sorts, that no country would want to join and each participant would like to quit. While primarily concerned with resolving their economic struggles, the members of the PIIGS resent the negative connotations and some have renounced the use of the term altogether. Though each member has become a staple of the media's attention, many professional organizations have made efforts to reduce or eliminate the term itself due to its negative connotations. Their efforts are commendable; however, there is no mistaking that these countries have a history of facing economic difficulties, high unemployment and political instability. While some of their individual GDP growth rates are...

Review a Beautiful Mind Movie

...ADYSSA RISKA L. Z. 291 12 089 Business Economics – YP47A A Beautiful Mind – Movie Review A Beautiful Mind is a story based on the life of the famous mathematician John Forbes Nash. His contributions to mathematics are outstanding. When he was an undergraduate, he proved Brouwer's fixed point theorem. He then broke one of Riemann's most perplexing mathematical problems and became famous for the Nash Solution.  From then on, Nash provided breakthrough after breakthrough in mathematics. In 1958 John Forbes Nash was described as being 'the most promising young mathematician in the world'. John solved problems in mathematics that many mathematicians deemed not solvable. On the threshold of such a promising and outstanding career, he then went on to suffer through three decades of a devastating form of paranoid schizophrenia. He lost his teaching professions and his job. He refused all medical treatment and spent years in and out of delusional states. Remarkably, in 1994 John won the Nobel Prize in Economic Science for his work on Game Theory. Game Theory is an analytical tool to understand the phenomena behind the way decision-makers interact. Nash's work on Game Theory in the early stages has Nash comparing it to football, pigeon feeding habits and picking up women. It's the bar scene where Nash has his big 'Ah Ha' moment. While Nash and his friends all have their eyes on the same blonde woman, he surprises his colleagues with the question that if we all want the same woman...

Picassco Economics

...What determines price of a Picasso? Louis Osore Taylor 11491892 Valuing good is simply judging whether it is worth its price. This means deciding if the good is worth more in value when compared to others that could be bought with the same amount of money, there are affects in consumption and production could affect the price of a painting. Frey and Pommerehne (1989) suggested that there are benefits from seeing art from an economic perspective. Art paintings, similar to other goods are limited by scarce resources available. Individual agents seek to maximise satisfactions. As a result, the consumption and production derived from producers and consumers create a market for demand and supply. This essay will look at the over view of the art markets and possible determinants that could affect prices Economists study how supply and demand are used to determine prices. With regards to the art market; artists can be viewed at the producers to the market and as assumed like any other agent rationally seek to benefit (Pindyck 2000) their own interests. We know through history the physical number of goods made by dead artists like Picasso, however, the amount of works produced in the markets will depend on the marginal input cost, which increases prices and expected value of their goods Demand side of the market is a function that ultimately affects the price of a good/service. The law of diminishing marginal utility is an explanation of the negative sloped demand curve. Even...

...last dollars in your pocket. With that money you can either buy a ticket for a movie or buy beers and pizzas and watch the TV-show. What you do is what gives you more pleasure, or, as we say, what maximize your utility. You make an economic choice.  Also, economics is about your income itself. The level of your income depends on the overall status of the economy. For example, if we have a recession, then the income (for most of us) will be less. If we have growth, then the income will rise. If we have growth, then I would have a job. If we have recession, then I might be unemployed. As you can see, economics affects almost everything.  Economics is about freedom, as well: in our economy, you're free to do what you want (economically speaking), because the market itself will decide what to produce and how to produce. In order to do what you want (let's say, to buy what you want at the quantity you want), you have to have the money. So, another factor of economics that affects your everyday life is the distribution of the total income.  Taxes Inflation Supply and Demand Trade http://www.investopedia.com/articles/personal-finance/032615/how-microeconomics-affects-everyday-life.asp Economic is the study of choices and behaviors. Relationship Between Economics And Psychology

...Introduction The assumption that economics and psychology are directly related disciplines rests upon various inferences made during the last decades and advanced by famous researchers such as Daniel Kahneman, W. Brian Arthur, Hugo Münsterberg, George Katona or Günther Schmölders. Although the perception today is that both fields are closely related, throughout history, the homogeneity between economics and psychology was not adequately elaborated. The challenge to introduce psychological concepts into economics appeared to be difficult and it was even more daunting 30 years ago, (Kahneman, 2003). Up to the present time, both disciplines have borrowed concepts from each other and tried to contribute to the improvement of theories developed...

The Nature of the Firms by Coase

...Negotiation- or Contract costs. Ex-Posts costs are for example costs for monitoring the behavior of your contract member or you have to change something ex-post in the contract. The ex post costs are more important because experts consider that a lot of contracts have errors or are bad formulated and so these transactions costs arise for sure. During the past century, different economists had different approaches and conclusions about the theory of the firm and the importance of transaction costs. Alchian & Demsetz (1972) stated in their work, that there would be no substaintial difference between using the market or an organization for the allocation of resources, making firms seem useless. Ronald Coase opposed this view in 1937 in his famous work "The nature of the Firm". For Coase, the main reason for establishing a firm is, that making contracts is costly and that using a firm would not eliminate, but reduce the number of contracts, hence, reduce the transaction costs by a large amount. The graphic above supports this statement, as it clearly shows, that with rising transaction complexity or difficulty, i.e. increasing number of contracts, there is a certain break-even point, where it is more...

Globalization

...Globalization is the system of interaction among the countries of the world in order to develop the global economy. In a Global market different nations work together in a single market and do international trade. Globalization refers to the integration of economics and societies all over the world. Globalization involves technological, economic, political, and cultural exchanges made possible largely by advances in communication, transportation, and infrastructure. In other words, it is an elimination of barriers to trade, communication, and cultural exchange. The main theory behind globalization is that worldwide openness will promote the economic wealth of all nations. As every coin has two sides likewise some people think that globalization is beneficial for an economy and some of them think that it increases the interference of developed countries in underdeveloped nations and affect the decision making and growth of underdeveloped countries. Arguments against Globalization: 1. In Globalization countries do business in a single large market that could lead to few dangers. Earlier, if any nation is not able to do well financially or made some mistakes, that specific country used to bear the losses. However, in today’s Global economy where different countries are doing business in a same single market, if one nation is not able to do well all other countries’ economies also gets affected. For instance, we have seen that due to financial downturn in American economy...
