“Being able to access where you are in your company/organization is critical for someone success in his/her career.” Feedback is the key for setting, measuring and evaluating the performance of an organization, it allows a manager to know, what is expected from the unit, to set the right goals for him/ herself and for the employees.
There are managers with great relationships with their superiors therefore they receive feedback on a regular basis and use it to improve their performance. But that is not the typical case!
In most organizations feedback is merely an annual performance review, there is a two-way of fear that overthrows feedback. In one hand bosses avoid and fear giving feedback, why? It is all about emotional issues: fear of not being liked that subordinate start talking behind their backs; fear of uncomfortable situations - furious employees or tears. Subordinates on the other side are terrified and hate criticism. Psychologists have many theories in why pointing down our imperfections raises such emotions but the truth is as referred before liking it or not feedback is critical for the growth of a professional and well function of a business.
Without training, feedback may lead to practice destructive, maladaptive behaviors:
Procrastination, when someone feels their work is not being acknowledged as it should there is a tendency to react carrying out less urgent tasks or doing more pleasurable things instead of doing more urgent ones. Miss deadlines.
Denial, some people fail to see their one value or overvalue themselves not understanding the real situation there are facing.
Brooding, when goals and expectations are set to high, the fear of not reaching those makes employees isolate from their colleagues and incapable of succeeding in most of the aims.
Jealousy, to compare performances is quite natural and to “wish” to do something or have something another person has is normal. However, setting a journey to be like another human being is recipe for craziness.
Self-sabotage, "Self-sabotage is when we say we want something and then go about making sure it doesn't happen." (Alyce P. Cornyn-Selby). it may occur that we bring our own bad luck by behaving in an unworthy way.
This type of performance negatively affects not only one’s work but the overall environment and health of the organization. Since feedback is so important workers have to learn to adapt. How do you accept someone telling you “Change”? There are some techniques: Recognizing and controlling one’s emotions is the first stage; Find support. Being asked to change is not easy. To talk to a friend or an experience person, it is almost impossible to change without encouragement and some help; Criticism can and should be constructive, recognize weaknesses, acknowledge what to work on; Divide the war in battles –there are many steps reach a goal; Reward yourself for your accomplishments.
Get what you need by asking, not waiting, for it:
Getting a year report feedback is a “to late to change” kind of report or at least a lot to change from then on. So to seek feedback the authors provide 4 steps: 1-self-assessment, 2-external feedback, 3- absorb feedback, 4-action towards change.
1 -Identify what are the most important aspects and tasks in the job. Try to understand and remember the indirect feedback given form coworkers colleagues superiors or employees through what they say and what they are silent about, observing body language and facial expressions.
2- Ask help from trustful colleagues, through their own judgments act on changing the main points and behaviors they highlighted. Arrange a meeting with your boss, previously assure that your intentions are to listen and to act within his/her advices with (no meltdowns) assuring that being prepared both with specific questions and in emotional issues. Pay attention to direct and indirect feedback. If the meeting is no longer being productive put an end to it. You can learn a lot about your importance within the company and how to integrate your work in the company needs.
3- Control your emotions sometimes you may feel hurt. Try to find reason in the statements, turn your emotions in productive thoughts.
4- Implement!
Nowadays there is such a demanding marketplace that drives businesses to change at an accelerated rate. The ability of an organization to unite, motivate and empower its workforce to embrace new values and behaviors is the key to build sustainable competitive business, giving and receiving feedback is a simple way to do it .Knowing how to react to feedback improves workers life in the organization and in their personal lives.
