This year, in my English 1302 class, I have learned writing skills that I will utilize for the rest of my college career. Communication through text is a critical skill of modern day society and should rightfully take place as required curricula. I have grown through my efforts as a writer and my increasingly practical knowledge of essay construction, source integration as well as an understanding of the importance of this course.
In my post-diagnostic examination, I received 56 out of 74. This was four questions less than my pre-diagnostic examination in which I received 60 out of 74. I feel I have grown as a writer further than just correcting the last minute grammatical and spelling errors in order to complete my final drafts. Instead, I have also blossomed in the skill of communication through my writing. I have learned the required structure of an essay, and how to construct a literature review as well as a researched argument. I still require practice in some areas of grammatical structure, such as comma splicing, as this was a recurring problem and an area of weakness for me.
I have learned that a properly formed essay requires an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion. In the introduction, the thesis should be clear and is normally located at the end of the introduction. I learned the introduction requires an exigency describing why my topic is significant. In the body paragraphs, topic sentences are crucial. They should point back to the thesis and explain what the paragraph will talk about. There needs to be supporting evidence in these paragraphs and an aversion to excess summary. Finally, the body paragraphs require an outcome statement that encompasses what the paragraph was about. The conclusion should restate the thesis and the exigency. In order to create an effective argument essay, I had to, most crucially, consider the audience. They are

Final Paper English 210

...CJ Loehner Eng. 210 Tina Crossgrove 9/19/13 Montresor: Criminal or Hero? “Amontillado” a type of sherry wine that cost a man his life and all because he had a deceptive friend who fools him into thinking he needed some wine tasted. Edgar Allen Poe uses many types of literary devices in his writing to give his readers an enjoyable story to read. One of the devices is double entendre. One of the finest examples of this writing technique is in Edger Allan Poe’s “Cask of Amontillado”. In Poe’s short story we meet the interesting character of Montresor, a rich man who is out for revenge. Revenge most people would not even consider worth killing someone over. Not only does he have this revenge, Montresor is not much of a man for he does not want to fight this battle fairly. Actually, he is a two-faced person who is friendly and caring to Fortunato’s face while planning on killing him the entire time. During this story Montresor sometimes speaks using a double entendre. A double entendre is when you say one thing but mean something altogether different. When one realizes this it makes it hard to understand and causes one to wonder if Montresor can be trusted as a narrator. Edger Allan Poe’s use of this literary device makes one wonder if the reader can really trust what Montresor has to say, an if he is a reliable narrator or not. The act of getting revenge on someone is one of the oldest actions taken throughout the history of mankind. Revenge is harming somebody...

...Show her it is a man’s world Kathy Hernandez ENGL-112-61251 March 19, 2013 Professor: Julie Pal Show her it is a man’s world Show her it is a man's world makes sexism against women of the 1960's. This tie ad creates so much controversy because of the way that this ad was advertised. This ad is important in my opinion because it shows the evolution of women rights. Throughout those years women did not have any right and they were humiliated by men and were only allowed to be at home, to take care of the children, house and husband when he came from work. I am making this analysis to show how this ad uses logos, pathos and ethos to persuade people to buy the product. This ad use Pathos which involves using emotion to influence someone else. Emotional scenes and images are used to grab the men’s attention and often make them feel powerful and strong. This is demonstrated by how the man is sitting in bed, with a straight and firm posture, head held high, arms behind his head, well dressed with the “Van Heusen” tie and with a pleasant look on his face. The emotions that this ad conveys to man is to feel that they are above women and that by using the tie women will keep looking at them like all mighty kings. The woman is kneeling beside the bed, handing him a tray containing his breakfast in bed and she looks up to him with admiration treating him like a king in his castle. All of this just makes the target buyer (men) see that with this tie they will have women on...

...fingers feverishly click out the final text message I need to send before class starts. I walk into the warm, musty computer lab and sit at my usual spot with the view of the library through the tree limbs. I am always sure to come to English class because I know of my terrible history in this subject area. I have always struggled with English and before this semester had assumed that the college level class would be the death of me. As I read over the syllabus for this class it states that we will learn to understand writing assignments as a series of tasks and develop flexible strategies for generating, revising, editing, and proof-reading the assigned papers. I shuddered at the sheer thought of having to write five papers. Narrative, Evaluation, Profile, Position. These words might as well have been written in another language because I had no idea how to differentiate between them. Despite my fears, I believe this semester’s English 101 course has truly helped me develop my writing skills and advance to a more capable writer. Throughout my life English has always been my most difficult subject. Even back in elementary school I would have 100 percent averages in all of my other classes except English. I do not know what it was that challenged me so much but I had a terrible time. With the start of my high school career coincided the beginning of my paper writing experiences. I would work for hours each day trying my best to write a paper that made sense and would flow smoothly...

English 214: Course Analysis

...Entering this course, English 214, the perspective that I had is that it would not be as different from my prior English class, English 114. As I began to learn about the course and its structure, it did become clear that both English classes would not be too distinct from one another. For instance, this course would also revolve around your own topic of choice, in which throughout the semester your writing would be based on that topic. I personally like this structure of the class, since I am able to grow as a writer, reader, and critical thinker while studying and researching a topic that interests me. My understanding of writing at the beginning of this course, I believed that the only way that I was going to improve would be through...

From what I can recall, I was intellectually thinking and writing constantly about my opinions on certain topics. The implementation of doing self-evaluations through writing assignments help me drastically. I was conscious about making sense instead of writing remarkably. Is the...

Introduction In today’s world, Internet auctions are becoming increasingly popular and are one of the most successful forms of electronic commerce (Bajari & Hortacsu, 2004). “Internet auctions already represent billions of dollars in transactions and have been growing at a rate of more than 10% per month (Lucking-Reiley, 2003)”. At an auction, a participant can buy and sell goods or services by making bids or taking bids. These selling transactions occur between businesses and consumers (B2C), between two businesses (B2B), between the government and businesses (G2B) and between the government and consumers (G2C). Although Internet auctions are becoming increasingly popular, because they offer many advantages to buyers and sellers, they also bare some negative consequences as snipping and shill bidding. Shill bidding is a strategy of the seller to raise the final price of his own offered items. The questions that arise are: how does shill bidding work and why is it used? To investigate shill bidding, first this paper introduces the concept of shill bidding. Second it discusses the English auction, followed by the payoffs and...

Composition Paper

...My Writing Knowledge While looking over the material for this paper my first thought was I’m hungry. This is probably not a typical thought when trying to prepare an English paper. However, it gave me an interesting thought. Writing a paper is like making a cheeseburger. Aside from my cheeseburger idea I also attended a college preparatory high school and have also taken other English courses while in the Marine Corps. To make a cheeseburger you start off with the bottom bun. This is the introductory paragraph of your paper. The outside bottom of the bun is plain bread which is general, and this is the first sentence of your introductory paragraph. Moving up the bun it becomes more specific by either frying it, adding butter or mayonnaise. You make the rest of the paragraph more specific to lead into the following paragraph. The next paragraph is the first piece of meat. In relation to writing a paper this is your first main topic, a bold statement that the writer is trying to get across to the reader. This paragraph must contain the information gathered from research. Paraphrasing is a good way to incorporate your knowledge and understanding of the research and in doing this it explains the topic to the reader. The third paragraph is the cheese of the cheeseburger. This is a good place to add the details and quotes of the research to the paper. When using quotes you must cite them correctly to give credit to the author. By using facts and statistics it supports the...

Peer Editing

...Writing in English in a second or foreign language situation is a useful skill for specific and well defined purposes such as the writing of reports , news items , official or friendly letters, speeches, notes and minutes. Students who are required to use English at college or university level will find that they have to have an adequate mastery of more advanced skills such as the summaries , essays and seminars and conference papers. Some students enjoy writing in English as a second language and may, as they gain confidence, wish to write descriptions, stories , songs or poems in the new language they are learning. Writing in English is also useful as a means of getting pupils to learn and to internalize the new language. It helps both the teacher and the learner to assess language mastery and to correct errors in expression. Peer editing is a technique often used in composition and other writing-intensive courses. Students engaged in peer editing trade drafts of material they have written and provide each other with suggestions for improvement. This technique can be used at any point in the writing process such as idea formation, outlining, draft revision, or copy editing a final draft. Peer response and editing are processes through which students respond to and provide feedback on their peers' writing. They are not meant to take the place of teacher evaluation, nor can they identify all the strengths and challenges in a piece of writing, but when incorporated into the writing...
