In a recent post written in the Computing Education Blog, two studies were presented discussing the benefits of changing, reversing, and/or flipping the classroom model in order to increase student comprehension. In these studies, data was collected on how well students understood concepts when they were tested on the materials before studying and how beneficial hands-on learning and experimentation was before individual studying took place. The first article, written by Daniel Willingham (Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia), talks about how students gain a better understanding in what they are learning when they try to generate the answer on their own first before reading and learning about it in books and other resources. As a result, there is a higher chance that students will retain and better understand concepts when they invest some initial effort in solving the problem. In essence, students benefit more from experimenting and doing rather than just studying. When students are interacting with materials and concepts in the classroom, there is a direct connection present between the student and the subject being taught. ...Illinois Business Educators Association (IBEA) 53nd Annual Fall Conference 2015 Meet Microsoft Windows 10 and Office 2016 This presentation was given by Corinne Hoisington of Central Virginia Community College and was a general overview of the new Microsoft Windows 10 and a very brief mention of Office 2016. Several promotional videos were shown promoting Windows 10 and it was noted that Windows 10 is not an option and the upgrade will be automatic. Ms Hoisington also discussed the fact that when previous versions of Windows were released, there was a slow adoption of the product because of the fee. With Windows 10, the adoption rate is high with one hundred and fifty million current users because of the fact that it is free. The upgrade to Windows 10 is fairly quick and there is no data loss. As mentioned previously, Windows 10 is free for the life of the machine on which it is installed. This was a business decision by Microsoft to get everyone on the same operating system. Microsoft will update Windows 10 and will provide support. This, however, is the last operating system that Microsoft will release. As of January 31, 2016, Microsoft support for any version prior to Windows 10 ceases. The question to still be answered is if printers will interface with Windows 10 and if security patches will function. Microsoft Office will also no longer support Internet Explorer. Online classes are helping me because when I am getting ready for bed I can crawl into bed, pull out my laptop, and do homework that is due that night or whenever. Cognitive psychology research informs us that learning is not a passive process of simply transmitting information from the instructor to the student rather an active mechanism where new information is integrated with student’s previous knowledge, prior experience and the context of today’s workplace. The big question is how? Two new pedagogical tools making waves and based on their staying power, not flavor-of-the-month approaches, are, flipped classroom technique and evidence-based teaching. ...Old School vs Current Learning Old school learning where a student such as myself will sit in a classroom and an instructor talks to the point where if you have insomnia he/she will cure it. With this the student has a book which could have from twenty five pages to five hundred and can be used as a deadly missile if thrown towards another student. Having the instructor on hand to handle questions and review your work while addressing any issues, this helps me a lot as a student because old school, no computers, no eBooks, and actually writing on paper. Going to the library was even part of the curriculum and going through shelves of index cards to find the information for your research paper. No going forward about twenty years, I am back in school and most everything has gone digital. I am enrolled in a technical college and I do have instructors and they present a power point presentation and then we go to the hands on now for me personally this is the best way of learning, they review what we are going to do and then we as a class conduct “Labs” and the instructor comes around and reviews the work we done and if it is not correct, then the instructor goes over where I went wrong and explains it to the class because someone else may have done the lab incorrectly as well and they know where they went wrong. ...Quantitative Article Review Summary While researching the quantitative article, “Professor’s Role in Motivating Students to Attend Class,” the purpose of the study is to get readers to understand how a college teacher motivates students within a class to learn. The researcher used correlational research design, with 156 graduate and undergraduate students. The researcher tried to select adequate samples form the students enrolled. Students in each of the classrooms were randomly placed into one of two groups by either using a random table of numbers or by flipping a coin. However the study employed an approach of survey questionnaire developed by Burgess (1998) was used in this study. After trying to disconnect myself from everything that involves media, I realized how much I rely on it to get me through each day. I was never this aware of its presence in today’s society until disconnecting myself. Without media to rely on, I found myself having to readjust my whole normal routine just to get through the day.
