Product design is conceptualisation of an idea about a product and transformation of that idea into a reality. There are many factors that can influence the design process. The design process is influenced by the clients needs and requirements, the project budget, timescales of the project, any design changes that take place and the approval of design concepts, as well as many more steps. (How much does product design cost?, 2014)

The quality of the product is usually, but not always reflected by the cost, weather that is the quality of manufacture and quality of materials or the thought put into the design and functionality of the product. This process of design can take very different forms due to the projects budget, it is important for designers and engineers to ensure that the specification can be achieved with the money available. If the project can not achieve its purpose and stay within budget it is not financially feasible. Furthermore if the project is significantly over budget then it also means that materials or sizes may need to be changed, starting the whole process again, costing additional money and time.

There are multiple ways the product design process can be carried out; a company could have in house teams that actively look for products to design. Alternatively a design agency may be hired to help develop an idea into a product. Depending on the complexity of the project the costs can vary massively.

The first stage of a product design project is to research the type of market and user base that the product should be designed for. This will come from the brief or if no brief is given the designer will need to prepare a brief, this can then be progressed into a design specification. It is important to ensure that the specification reflects the findings of research as much as possible as an error at this stage could potentially have

Systematically used these methods can yield fantastic results serving as a tool in the form and design generation / development process. In various product domains, especially where sheer aesthetic appeal or plurality of form is more important than functionality or utility; development of form family, variations on theme, etc. are the main design activity. This way of working will serve as an effective tool in cases where the design development process is confined mostly to the paperwork only but the product demands or has a scope for 3Dimensional thinking e.g. industrial jewelry design. Approach: Viewed individually, orthographic views could be interpreted in more then one way; using this...

...MS Access 2003 Introduction to Data Base A database can help you enter data easily, find it quickly, use it to create labels or mailings, and summarize it in printed and online reports. Benefits of Using a Database A database is much more than just a list or table. It gives you true command of your data, enabling you to retrieve it, sort it, analyze it, summarize it, and report results in moments. It can combine data from various files, so that you never have to enter information twice. It can even make data entry more efficient and accurate. A key benefit of Database is avoiding the complications of multiple lists. Let's say that you're the secretary of a large hiking club. You have a list of recycling volunteers, a list of holiday party volunteers, addresses for newsletter labels, a membership list, and so on. Suppose that a club member, who appears on a number of lists, changes her e-mail for the second time this year. With only a set of lists, you'd have the tiresome job of changing that information everywhere it occurs. With a well-structured database, you'd have to change it only once. The database takes care of everything else. If you're just working with 10 or so items, then you'll probably want to create a simple list, perhaps as a worksheet in Microsoft Excel or a bulleted list or table in Microsoft Word. If your data is more complex, or changes frequently, then an Access database gives you an advantage. Relational Data base & MS Access Relationships...

...067232976x_ch15.qxd 4/1/08 4:03 PM Page 1 15 Understanding the Database Design Process In this chapter, you’ll learn the thought processes behind designing a relational database. After this theory-focused chapter, you’ll jump headlong into learning the basic MySQL commands in preparation for integrating MySQL in your own applications. Topics covered in this chapter are . Some advantages to good database design . Three types of table relationships . How to normalize your database . How to implement a good database design process The Importance of Good Database Design A good database design is crucial for a high-performance application, just as an aerodynamic body is important to a race car. If the car doesn’t have smooth lines, it will produce drag and go slower. Without optimized relationships, your database won’t perform as efficiently as possible. Thinking about relationships and database efficiency is part of normalization. Beyond the issue of performance is the issue of maintenance—your database should be easy to maintain. This includes storing only a limited amount (if any) of repetitive data. If you have a lot of repetitive data and one instance of that data undergoes a change (such as a name change), that change has to be made for all occurrences of the data. To eliminate duplication and enhance your ability to maintain the data, you might create a table of possible values and use a key to refer to the value. That way, if the value changes names,...

...RESEARCH PAPER FFD 122: History of Art and Design 2, Spring 2010 GUIDELINES 1. PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH PAPER: One of the aims of History of Art and Design is to develop a historical and critical sensibility about artistic and cultural production. To test this ability, you will prepare a research paper about an object of art or design of your choice, based on the “Five Contexts of Art and Design” topics of this semester: MAKING, STYLE, IDEOLOGY, USE and MEANING. 2. CONTENT OF THE RESEARCH PAPER: Your chosen artwork/design CAN NOT be from an artist or an example that has been discussed in class. Check the course syllabus for a list of all works that are in the lectures. You are advised to choose a well-known work of a famous artist/designer so that you can easily find sources related to that work. You are discussing your chosen object, NOT its photograph. Do not talk about your object’s image but its ACTUAL three-dimensional reality, as much as you can understand it. Keep in mind the sub-themes for each of the themes of the semester because you will write about ONE sub-theme from each theme. | | | | |MATERIALS: How the choice of materials made by the artist or designer influences the form of the end | | |product. ...

Visual Communication and Graphic Design

... which causes a delay in the presentation. Also, to retain a captive audience the presentation should and must be pleasing to the audience and not to overwhelm them with too much or too many colors. The author or creator doesn’t want this to happen as it may affect the ability for the viewer to recall and associate the graphic and message at a later time. Many have interpreted visual communication as a fancy term for graphic design. I see it as a process of providing pictorial and written information to an intended audience. I see two important distinctions that separate visual communications and graphic design. The first is that visual communication is a “process,” that by its problem-solving nature includes investigative and analytical skills in the creation of communications. Graphic design focuses primarily on form-making, while visual communication incorporates a broader series of efforts to provide rationale for form-making. The second distinction is that visual communication includes other types of communications beyond printed matter. The design of interactive computer presentations that integrate video, animation, sound, stored...

20th Century Design Slt 1

...Learning Task 1 – What is Design? Q1. What was the industrial revolution? When did it occur? How did industrialisation lead to the creation of the design profession? How was industrial manufacturing different from the traditional way of making a product and what role did the designer play in creating new products? The industrial revolution, which began in England around the 19th century, was the transition of a once rural and agricultural society into one in which new manufacturing processes were introduced. Industrialisation gave way to more jobs, and with products beginning to be produced in factories or with more advanced equipment, it meant that the product design and the actual production were no longer done by the same person. Q2. Explain what series and mass production means. What other factors over time have contributed to the high turnover and international sales of manufactured products? Mass production, or otherwise known as series production, is the manufacturing of a product in bulk. Mass production reduces wasted resources and shortens the amount of time needed to produce the product as it generally utilizes an assembly line. Q3 Using your own words, explain the meaning of the term “form follows function” and its significance. The supporters of Modernist design and functionalism assumed two things about form follows function. What were they? What do you understand by the meaning of each of these? Explain in your own words. Form follows function is the...

Database Normalization and Logical Process Concept Paper

...database design, also referred to as the logical model, is the process of arranging data into logical, organized groups of objects that can easily be maintained. The logical design of a database should reduce data repetition or go so far as to completely eliminate it. The needs of the end user should be one of the top considerations when designing a database. We should remember trough all design process that the end user is the person who ultimately uses the database. There should be ease of use through the user's front-end tool (a client program that allows a user access to a database), but this, along with optimal performance, cannot be achieved if the user's needs are not taken into consideration. Some user-related research and design considerations in any business database include the following: What data should be stored in the database? How will the user access the database? What privileges does the user require? How should the data be grouped in the database? What data is the most commonly accessed? How is all data related in the database? What measures should be taken to ensure accurate data? Ultimately Data should not be redundant, which means that the duplication of data should be kept to a minimum for several reasons. As if data management were not difficult enough, redundancy of data could prove to be a disaster. Design Guidelines The actual guidelines of normalization, normal forms, are the three most common normal forms in the normalization research, design and process...

Database Design

...DATABASE DESIGN One of the most important if not the most important aspect of a database is the database design process. It is a must that the design is good and functional. A database consists of many different parts of an engineer’s design, which together makes up a complete database system. A database system is designed to manage large bodies of information. Database design is the construction of a database as a subsystem of an information system. Therefore, the database design process is an integral component of the information system design process. ( Chilson and Kudlac, 1983). One of the greatest problems in the application design process is the lack of foresight. During the design process there must be a thorough evaluation of your database, what it should hold, how data relates to each other, and most importantly, whether it is scalable. When it comes to the maintenance of your database it should be easy to maintain, this means storing as limited amount of repetitive data as possible. Let’s say you have a lot of duplicate data, and one instant of that data undergoes a name change, that change has to be made for all occurrences of that data. You can overcome this duplication problem by creating a table of possible values and use a key to refer to the value. That way, if the value changes names, the change occurs only once, in the master table. What are the steps involved in the database design. First, you must determine the purpose of your database, this helps...
