Furthermore, convergence has the effect of decreasing the social distance between speakers which includes downwards convergence which is moving away from Received Pronunciation. A situation where this would take place could be talking to a friend or relative with a strong regional accent. This contrasts with upwards convergence where a person moves closer to Received Pronunciation. A situation in which this could occur could be when talking to a boss or someone with higher status. Mutual convergence is when both the participants move towards each other’s speech styles which tends to happen when both the speakers like each other. Divergence has the effect of emphasising the differences between two people’s speech styles such as a teacher asserting their authority with a class of students. This followed a seven-month period in which Cook was already functioning O O as CEO while Jobs focused on fighting the health problems that ultimately took his life on October 5. Many are watching to see how this unique leadership transition will work out for Apple, but it is not the first unique leadership transition they have faced. Jobs, of course, was the cofounder of Apple, but organizational infighting led to his ouster when John Sculley took over in the mid-1980s. Sculley oversaw the growth of the Macintosh and thus the company, but when that growth slowed and new internal issues arose, a series of CEOs failed to get the company back on track. In 1997, a more experienced Jobs returned and drove tremendous growth. The leadership history of Apple is a good reminder that a leadership transition–particularly one involving the founder– presents both risk and opportunity to any organization. Our voices change all the time throughout our lifetime anyway. Who cares if it changed intentionally or naturally? Carl Elliot in “The Perfect Voice” and Lynda Mugglestone in “Talking Proper” both speak about accents. Although they both explain the effect of accents on class and social status, it is safe to say their perspectives are not so similar. By examining both articles, we are able to get a clearer view on what exactly the authors want to convey in their writings. It is very clear that both Elliot and Mugglestone believe that accent has an effect on class and social status. In his article, Elliot provides several examples to show this idea. Even during his own childhood, while watching other southerners on TV, he realized something. These people sounded like hicks just because of the way they spoke. They had a certain accent that made it hard for anyone to take them seriously. I9t is because of this social pressure that people were willing to go to “the Perfect Voice” clinic and spend $45 an hour to “reduce” their accents. It says, “when my betossed soul…” and the word “betossed” shows the imagery of ship in a storm and Romeo is now confused. In line 83, it says “ One writ with me in sour misfortune’s book!” and it represents the image of a “ sour misfortune book” which resolute throughout the play and has the idea of his fate controlling the action. Romeo also asks many questions to himself which is another sign of confusion. The line, “ I’ll bury thee in a triumphant grave.” tells us that the grave is magnificent as it holds the body of Juliet. In the next part, Romeo sees Juliet. There is a contrast between light and dark as it is set in a dark tomb. “A grave? O no, a lantern, slaughter’d youth” and “This vault a feasting presence full of light” shows us this imagery, Romeo describing Romeo as a source of light in the darkess of the tomb.. Dying in a dark tomb might also represent eternal darkness. It also says “ feasting presence” meaning a festival. It makes the audience more aware of how close the lovers come to finding joy but making their end in darkness all the more tragic.
