“Don’t go in there” the little girl said in a quiet voice. I looked at her & asked, “Well why stay out here? I’m just going to see the show…” She stopped me as I was finishing my sentence “It’s not just an ordinary freak show, you’re going to die! He’s here and you’re never going to survive him, he’s more powerful than anyone alive. Once you die here you can never leave! Your spirit gets trapped!” I tried to ask her who “he” was but she disappeared. It must have been part of the act. My friend and I drove up from Georgia to Tennessee just see the biggest freak show in the USA. We walked up to the ticket box and asked for two tickets. As we were walking into the arena I saw the little girl again, but this time she was yelling at a couple to leave. I started to walk to her, she turned, looked at me, and disappeared again.
Charlie & I found our seats after about a half hour of searching. We have front row seats, right in front of all the action. As we sat down we realized everyone had popcorn, cotton candy, & soda so I told Charlie that I would go get us our snacks while she saves our seats. As I was walking there were “freaks” everywhere doing tricks for little kids & their parents. I got so caught up in all the tricks I didn't have much time left to get us snacks, so I rushed to the concessions grabbed our snacks & rushed back to our seats. I gave the snacks to Charlie so I could take my seat. As I sat down the show began. There were clowns walking through the stands. They seemed to be everywhere. They were my biggest fear. I asked Charlie if she saw but she said she saw giant spiders. I was confused for a minute until the announcer said
“Welcome to the biggest freak show in all of America. If you see your biggest fear then the illusion worked, but if you don't see anything then you were probably confused & a little amused by everyone else around you. Its okay if you didn't see your biggest fear, it doesn't work for everyone or maybe you just don't fear anything.”
As the show went on I saw the little girl in a couple of acts. Her name was Caroline. She was very short look as though she was 6, long brown curly hair, & hazel eyes. Her acts were not as complex as the other ones, but that might have been because she had to memorize what to say before the show started. She looked cute and innocent, but she scared me a little. The show dragged on a little longer it got quite boring, Charlie seemed to like it. As the show ended the acts seemed to drag on forever. Then all of a sudden Charlie disappeared and so did the audience. Every light went out in the arena except the spotlight in the middle of the floor. All of a sudden it seemed like a million sad clowns came from every direction and there was no escape. I thought it was another illusion, but the announcer was sitting in his stand laughing. He disappeared during the last illusion. Everything seemed uneven and I was a little worried. I called for Charlie, but I got no answer. I thought to myself next time I want to see a show for $174.95 its going to be a concert. The announcer said “There wont be a next…” He chuckled then disappeared. The clowns faded away, and I was the only person left in the arena. I got up, walked down to the main floor, past the concessions, and out the doors. I didnt make it very far though; I was trapped, I couldn't leave the arena, I just ended up back into the same seat I left. I was confused what was happening, but then I remembered what the little girl said. She had said he was here was “he” the announcer? Am I dead? As I was trying to remember what the little girl said the lights turned on, and the announcer reappeared. He announced
“Well you see Shanley you were the 100th ticket holder. You were the one to go tonight. Don't worry though Charlie got home safely, but some bad news would be that you're stuck here with us freaks. We had to kill you, but everything will be ok. Were friendly people, but we need to get ready for the next show so if you want we can talk more later. Your costume is in you dressing room.” He disapeared & I freaked out. I panicked, this can't be happening! Why me? People already started walking in, so I ran to my dressing room, and changed into my costume. I was a bearded lady. I went on stage, did my act, and changed out of my costume. The show had ended and I saw the announcer hypnotizing the little boy who was the 100th ticket holder. I ran out there, and screamed
“No! Dont hurt him. Hes just a little kid he won't understand what's going on!” But as I finished screaming my opinion I woke up, and found myself laying in bed instead of in the arena with the freaks. I said to myself
“Thats the last time I even think about going to a freak show!”

Statement of Intent

...Anahera Nin’s Statement of Intent For my writing folio, I wrote two pieces of creative writing. The theme of my writing folio is ‘The Monster Within’, and has been interpreted very differently for both stories. My first piece, ‘The Real Monsters’, is a short story that takes place in the 1800s and features a circus freak show. The story focuses on a young boy who gives into curiosity and because of his innocent heart, receives a valuable lesson about what really makes someone a monster. It is aimed for an older audience, typically older teenagers to adults as the story explores darker themes and hidden morals that will probably not be picked up by younger readers. It is meant to cause the reader to think about how they themselves view others who may be different, and how being mean about another’s uniqueness such as calling someone ‘ugly’ can be a hypocritical thing to do, as the only person who seems to be doing ugly things is the name-caller. My second piece, ‘Looking Through The Glass’, is based on the real-life event of the 2014 Isla Vista killings, where Elliot Roger, son of Hunger Games unit director Peter Roger, murdered 6 people and injured 13 people before committing suicide. The piece is taken from the viewpoint of his father, Peter Roger, and it outlines Peter’s thoughts as he watches his son’s video ‘Elliot Rodger’s Retribution’. It is aimed for the same audience as my previous piece, older teens and adults as older teens are about the same age as Elliot and...

Essay 2 Microtheme 5

...Genna Cahill English Composition 1001 Essay 2 Microtheme 5 After reading Rachel Adams’s chapter “Sideshow Cinema”, I have gained a new perspective on Tod Browning’s film Freaks. Adams suggests that there may be a fine line between monster and victim regarding the normal people, such as Cleopatra and Hercules, and the freaks, such as Hans and the conjoined Hilton twins. “After establishing Hans as a sympathetic character who suffers unwarranted abuse, the spectacle of Cleo’s body, mutilated at the hands of the freaks, leaves the viewer unsure about who is the victim and who aggressor,” Adams describes (77). Up until the point of Cleo’s revelation as the “chicken-woman”, the normal-looking people leave us to feel more sympathy for the freaks based on the treatment of them. Majority of the film, we see Cleo, Hercules, and their normal friends treat the freaks as inferiors, teasing them subtly to their faces and more so behind their backs. Therefore, in this sense, the normal people can be seen as monsters and the freaks as victims. The effect of the camera also gives us more sympathy for the freaks. The settings in which these people are placed affect the way we see them. For example, Hans is often placed next to larger objects, especially in Cleo’s wagon, and this makes him, in proportion, look much, much smaller than he actually is. This is true when we are looking at Cleopatra from his point of view as well. Compared to Hans, she seems a lot taller, and we can understand...

Freaks Movie

Effects of Micromanagement

...Micromanagement and offers some possible solutions to alleviate the problem. Effects of Micromanagement in a Work Environment Definition Micromanagement often times carry a negative connotation and is associated with bad management traits. There are countless articles written about proper leadership that vilifies the word and the trait definition of it. White, R. J. (2010) commonly refers to Micromanagement as the control of an enterprise in every particular and to the smallest details, with the effect of obstructing progress and neglecting broader, higher level policy issues. Micromanagers are also often associated with traits that paint them in a negative character such as being control freaks, compulsively obsessed with meaningless details, and deadlines. Furthermore, micromanagement problems are not limited only to the upper echelons of leadership (where it is more apparent) as sometimes even regular employees suffer from it as well with regards to how they manage their time or how they perform their tasks. Insecurity is also a trait that is closely associated with micromanagers. Hernandez, J. S. (2012) argues that a micromanager is typically insecure and will be threatened by an assessment. Weyand, J. (1996) points out, however, that micromanagers do have value. He points out that in organizations where micromanagers reign supreme there is no questions on who is in charge and sometimes micromanagement is better...

Stereotypes In Hardison's Demon Freaks

...Demon Freaks, by J.R.R.R. (jim) Hardison begins by introducing Bing and Ron Slaughter, fraternal twin brothes, with vastly different styles and personalities (so seriously, why bother making them twins at all). Bing, named after the crooner, Crosby, is the weak stomached , gauntish, thinker, with black hair, and penchant for British Punk Rock garb. Ron, who’s namesake is the happymeal pushing clown of fast-food fame, sports, the body mass, pigment, and get-it-done attitude his minutes older brother lacks. With long blonde hair, jeans, and a gaudy Hawaiian shirt, he affects more of a surfer-grunge look. These boys are in an angsty teen band along with a pair of their friends. Kaitlyn Krimpson is the long time classmate and unrequited crush of the brothers. She is smart but flakey; and, perpetually late, due to an obession with showering. Prathmesh Kimitri, aka Meat (complete with allusion to A.T.H.F.) is an East Indian lad, atypical of the common stereotype. He is the unkempt , doofy, class-clown, with no qualms about spoofing his wealthy, pseudo-celeberty father....
