...Leadership Abstract All organizations have some type of leadership style or program that is implemented in them. It could be either a single type of leadership, or a combination of styles, that are being used by managers, supervisors, employees, etc. The leader of an organization is often a manager, and they set the tone for the organization. This paper looks at a leadership style, “full range model,” which is a combination of transactional leadership, transformational leadership, with laissez-faire behaviors. Another key factor in organizations is ethics. Ethical standards are necessary to have a positive leader who is setting a first-rate example of what employees should do, how to act, what to wear, etc. Keywords: transactional leadership, transformational leadership, laissez-faire, ethics, full range Leadership There are various forms of leadership styles in organizations that exist today. Traditionally, leadership can be defined “as the capability of the manager to direct, inspire and motivate their employees to produce greater work than their normal level of performance, with this contributing to organizational effectiveness” (Michie, 2012, pg. 609). Not only is crucial the manager has leadership, but ideally the employees will have leadership skills too to work through the days, help colleagues, and/or customers. Any one person can have skills that “classify” them as a “leader.” To be on task, a role model, going out of the way to help others, holding confidence...

...This module contained concepts that provide every leader with valuable tools that can be used to enhance their effectiveness. Although all of the concepts of this module are useful, I believe the most valuable concepts are Adaption-Innovation (A-I) Theory, Team Building, and Full Range Leadership Development (FRLD). I believe many of the lesson principles in these concepts are closely related and tie into each other on a regular basis and that's why it's important to have a good understanding of these concepts. After completing the cognitive preference estimator I discovered that I am moderately adaptive. According to lesson principles, moderate adaptors require structure and rely on proven methods to solve problems, whereas innovators like to operate outside traditional boundaries and bend rules to solve problems. The best problem solving occurs when adaptors and innovators work together. When working together all perspectives of the problem will be examined. Because there is such a large gap between the different styles there is a greater chance of conflict. Conflicts happen because of the human interaction and time and energy are taken away from the original problem. In order to handle this problem teams should use a bridger. Bridgers help both parties understand each other's approach through the use of interpersonal skills, active listening, and effective questioning techniques. When these techniques are applied both parties gain a better understanding of how the other party...

...Transactional and Transformational Leadership in the Work Place In the following paper I will discuss what transactional and transformational leadership are. I will also provide examples of how each of these leadership styles plays a role in the workplace. James McGregor Burns first introduced the concept of transforming leadership; he established two concepts “transforming leadership and transactional leadership” (Burns, 1978). According to Burns (1978) the transforming approach creates a compelling change in the life of people and organizations. It creates a new way of perceptions and values. For employees, it changes their expectations and ambitions. Bernard M. Bass developed the concept of Burns’ work. He used the term transformational rather than transforming. He explained the personality traits that influence transforming and transactional leadership. He also added on to Burns’ work by explaining how transformational leadership could be measured and how it impacts follower motivation and performance (Bass, 1985). A commonly used survey called “the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ Form 5X)” is used to measure each component of the full range leadership. The transactional leadership style is a style which is more concerned with keeping the status quo. The transactional leaders use various incentives and power to motivate employees to perform to their best ability. These leaders tend not to see the long term in strategically guiding an organization; they...

...is Transformational Leadership? Is there a relationship between transformational leadership and emotional intelligence? Introduction For more than three decades, the paradigm of transformational leadership has attracted a vast amount of academic interest. A large number of empirical studies lend credibility to this interest by linking aspects of transformational leadership to a range of positive organisational and individual outcomes (Bass, 1997; Bass & Avolio, 1994; Lowe, Kroeck & Sivasubramaniam, 1996). Due to these desirable effects, a significant amount of research has also been undertaken in trying to understand factors that predict or contribute to transformational leadership behaviours. For this reason, the relationship between emotional intelligence and transformational leadership is one that has attracted much attention. The following paper examines this proposition in more detail. In order to gain a more detailed understanding of transformational leadership and its relationship with emotional intelligence, the paper first examines the two subjects as standalone concepts. In determining if and how a relationship exists, the paper subsequently brings the two constructs together so that a critical examination and analysis of the research available can be undertaken. Lastly, after examining the case for and against a relationship, a conclusion is drawn from the analysis presented. Transformational Leadership The notion of transforming leadership was first introduced...

...Transformational leadership is defined as a leadership approach that causes change in individuals and social systems. In its ideal form, it creates valuable and positive change in the followers with the end goal of developing followers into leaders. Enacted in its authentic form, transformational leadership enhances the motivation, morale and performance of followers through a variety of mechanisms. These include connecting the follower's sense of identity and self to the mission and the collective identity of the organization; being a role model for followers that inspires them; challenging followers to take greater ownership for their work, and understanding the strengths and weaknesses of followers, so the leader can align followers with tasks that optimize their performance.... Background James MacGregor Burns (1978)[1] first introduced the concept of transforming leadership in his descriptive research on political leaders, but this term is now used in organizational psychology as well. According to Burns, transforming leadership is a process in which "leaders and followers help each other to advance to a higher level of morale and motivation". Burns related to the difficulty in differentiation between management and leadership and claimed that the differences are in characteristics and behaviors. He established two concepts: "transforming leadership" and "transactional leadership". According to Burns, the transforming approach creates significant change in...

...who provides direction and inspiration towards a goal. Leadership theory is critical for our understanding of the role individuals can play in shaping an organization. (Clegg et al, 2008) Leadership is considered both a character trait as well as a relational concept whereby one person influences others. (Katz and Kahn, 1978) Over the years many different leadership theories have emerged with some gaining a much wider acceptance than others. Here a discussion on two well known theories is being undertaken to understand what they are and how best they describe the concept of leadership. Path Goal Theory Some contemporary theories on leadership have purported that the leadership is all about being able to adapt and show flexibility to ever changing situations and circumstances. This group believes that effective leadership does not stem from some behavioural traits only but to a large extent depends on the situation in which a potential leader might find them. This situation or context as it is called comes from the nature of work that the leader has to carry out, the internal culture and environment of an organization and the external socio economic environment that the organization finds itself in (Fiedler, 1994). Path Goal Theory of leadership belongs to this school of thought. It was first put forward by Robert House (House, 1996) and since then has become one of the most studied and researched theory on leadership. According to this theory effective leaders motivate their...

...a position as a school administrator for an elementary school system is to provide leadership for staff members and quality education for all students, and to become part of the world of education. The Benjamin Franklin School located in the Dallas School District serves as a growing population of approximately 1,070 students. The school offers a well-defined educational system for the students, and it has an overall student-to-teacher ratio of 17:1. In addition to the statewide curriculum standards, the school offers special education programs and classes for the gifted and talented. As a result of the school district rankings in the student’s performance, Benjamin Franklin School has become the worst in the district which has caused stereotyping among teachers and students. Based upon strategies planning efforts to ensure the school fosters an atmosphere where all are respected, I would like to work toward creating a positive environment where students feel valued, and supported by their teacher. I will assess data to measure students learning and improve leadership skills that value every student at Benjamin Franklin School to increase achievement. The progress toward the goal will report better performance ratings. While focusing on the many challenges of becoming an administrator, I need to focus on classroom management and improving student’s motivation to learn. I will apply to a full time teaching position so that I can prepare myself fully. I am currently working with...

...Leadership Style Analysis There are a variety of tools that can be used to better understand ones’ core for leadership and power. Four of these tools are how good am I at building and leading teams, leadership style assessment, preferred conflict handling style, and preferred form of power assessment. Each of these assessments gave some insight into each team member’s leadership behaviors and practices, how his or her style correlates into traditional leadership models, and how these scores will help the overall functionality of a team environment. Leadership Style Melissa’s leadership style leans more towards concern for task (x= 16) over concern for people (y=7). Berlew (1974) states, “a leader or manager who is good at organizing to get work done and who relates well to his subordinates should have a highly productive group and satisfied workers” (p. 22). This supports that there has to be a balance between concern for task and concern for people. Melissa’s score for concern for people was average, being one point away from the high range [High>7, Low 10]. Even though her concern is more focused on task, she still has a concern for people that contributes to her successful leadership. These results conclude that Melissa’s tendencies will be for the accomplishment of the task, with less concern for what individuals have to go through for that task. She might tend to come across direct and focused; however, her underlying tone will be to help others to accomplish the task...

...leader looks to make the unjust just, they look to make the wrong right, and they look to treat all individuals equally. John F. Kennedy was this ethical leader. During his tenure as President he faced many social and moral dilemmas where unethical practices were called in to question. He addressed one such issue when he used ethical leadership and critical thinking to lead a nation in recognizing equality for women. On December 14, 1961, President Kennedy established the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women to investigate women’s equality in education, in the workplace, and under the law (“Presidential Commission on the Status of Women”, n.d.). He wanted “to call attention to the unconscionable practice of paying female...

...provide insurance coverage for an additional 32 million previously uninsured Americans. The need to improve the health care system is becoming increasingly evident as challenges related to both the quality and costs of care persist” (IOM report, p. 21). The key factors involved in nurses having the competency to meet the higher standards being set are based on: the transformation of nursing practice, the modification of nursing education, and the cultivation of nurses taking a more active leadership role. Transforming nursing practice can occur several ways. The IOM report stresses the importance of this transformation to take place to improve care of the more diverse population of patients. It states that, “…the system must undergo and fundamental shift to provide patient-centered care; deliver more primary as opposed to specialty care; deliver more care in the community rather than the acute care setting; provide seamless care; enable all health professionals to practice to the full extent of their education , training, and competencies; and foster inter-professional collaboration” (IOM report p.86). With nurses being one of the most...

Lilienfeld et. al., 2010 sought to make a direct correlation between the personality traits and the successful or unsuccessful presidency of the presidents included in this study. To conduct this study particular study, 121 well-known biographers, journalist, and scholars were recruited to evaluate the personality traits of each president involved in this study. Each of the raters tasked with evaluating the pre-office and in-office personality traits and behaviors were considered to be experts on one or more of the presidents involved in the study. At the conclusion of this study, the findings indicate that boldness in combination with certain attributes of psychopathy, contribute to and individuals success in politics and other leadership roles. The conclusion also presents limitations within the study. The limitations of this study open up a platform for additional research to be conducted regarding the impact of boldness and interpersonal behaviors on other leadership roles. The authors clearly acknowledge that their study did...
