Jupiter has more than 60 known moons. The four largest are known as the Galilean Moons. They were discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610. These moons have some of the most interesting geology in the solar system. The four largest moons of Jupiter consist of: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. According to Wikipedia the moons “are the most massive objects in the solar system with the exception with the Sun and the eight planets, with radii larger than any of the dwarf planets.” Io’s landscape consists of volcanic eruptions and sulfur dioxide snowfields, making it popularly known as the moon of fire and ice. Europa, interestingly, is among the brightest moons in the solar system due to its high degree of reflectivity. Ganymede’s most exceptional characteristics is that it is the only moon to have its own magnetic field. Callisto, the final moon of the Galilean Moons, landscape has remained practically unchanged since its formation. According to Behind the Name, the meaning of the name Io is unknown; however, “in Greek mythology, Io was a princess loved by Zeus, who changed her to a heifer (a young female cow that has not borne a calf) in order to hide her from Hera. Specifically, the moon Io, holds its name with her honour. Io’s surface is almost entirely made up of volcanoes. This was discovered when The Voyager Spacecraft took the first close-up images. These volcanoes are incredibly large. Cameras on the Voyager Spacecraft captured images of the volcanic eruptions taking place. Interestingly, because of the frequency of the volcanic eruptions, Io’s surface looks young. The atmosphere of Io is a thin layer of sulfur dioxide. Being so far away from the Sun, it takes Jupiter about 11.9 Earth years to orbit the Sun (Kerrod 148). Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system; in fact, it is more massive than all the other planets combined! At its equator, the gas giant measures 88,850 miles in diameter (Kerrod 148). Jupiter is so huge that it is eleven times bigger across than Earth. Jupiter’s size, however, does not seem to have any effect on how fast the planet spins on its axis. A saltwater ocean is believed to exist nearly 200 km below Ganymede's surface, sandwiched between layers of ice.
