I did not realize that they were from royalty, I had always just known them as the Wipfli’s. They lived in the Wipfli castle containing 30 rooms, which was wsurrounded by a wall and a moat, which is still owned and occupied by present members of the family. Inside the castle at each of the four corners of the castle, there was a large dungeon. All the walls were covered by murals. There was a circular marble stairway that wound its way up in the middle of the building. On the stairs were the Stations of the Cross. The castle is noted for its one-half mile tunnel which leads from the castle, under the river and comes out to the next village where there was a lake. The purpose of the tunnel was to provide an escape during World War 2. It also has a summer house way up in the mountains where the family lived during long hot summers. My cousin, Kathi, has a painting of the summer house over her dining room fireplace. One of the original family’s sons fell in love with Josephine Van Albert, of the family of Prince Albert (on the tobacco can). They married against her families objections which was possible because the Wipfli’s were wealthier than the Van Albert’s, and they moved from England to Switzerland. Although slavery in general interested me, I was even more interested to find out how enslaved women were treated in the nineteenth century, before the Civil War and also after they were finally granted their freedom. I often thought women would have been treated a little better than males. I believed they would have been given an easier workload to bear since they also had the task of raising their children. It was disturbing to discover they were treated much worse than males were. Because women could work as well as reproduce offspring, providing an additional generation of slaves, women were extremely valuable to slave owners. "Strong black women were sold as breeders valued for their reproductive as well as productive capacity" (Doherty). In this article, I attempt to answer fundamental questions regarding the complex, innate relationship between design and culture and suggest restructuring a conceptual framework applicable to related research and education that effectively reveals the multi faceted characteristics of design and culture in the present age.
