1. Describe what the JLI campaign is (what does JLI stand for?), along with its mission.
JLI stand for Just Label It and it is a campaign, and the goal of that campaign is to have GM foods labeled. They believe that people have the right to know what is in their foods. JLI even made millions of comments on the petition that the FDA had because the FDA feels that no labeling is not required.
2. List 3 arguments provided by Gary Hirshberg in favor of labeling GMO’s in food.
Hirshberg stated in his article that labeling on foods needs to be done because of the health, safety, environmental, and religious considerations that people need to know when buying food. He then ended the article with stating that people need to know about everything that is in their products so…show more content… List 3 arguments provided by Nelson against the labeling of GMO’s in food.
He first talked about foods only should be labeled when they are significantly different from their original. He then talked about reasons why the labeling is not required, and he stated Biotechnology is a process and not a product. Then he said that products that are produced by biotech are not different from the counterparts, and they are not allergens. Also, Nelson noted that biotech crops have been consumed and grown for many years, and there has not been any problems with humans that have occurred.
5: Who provides the stronger argument and why? (not necessarily what you believe, just who does a better job arguing their position?)
I fell that Philip Nelson did the better argument because I felt that Gary Hirsheberg just talked about that people have the right to know what is in their foods, which is true. I would of liked if Hirshberg would of stated more of the downsides of the GMO products, and for those reasons that is why food should be labeled when they contain it. Nelson explained to the readers what biotechnology is and why it is not an issue. I thought he did a better job of informing the
