General Daniel “Chappie” James Jr. was born on February 11, 1920 in Pensacola, Florida. He had instructed African American pilots during World War II. He flew combat missions during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, which is how he earned the Distinguished Service Medal, and became a four-star general in the U.S Air Force in 1975 (he was the first African American to achieve this in the U.S. Air Force). James died in 1978 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was the first African American to have have the privilege of receiving the honor of being a four star general. He had become interested in flying and had become a pilot through the Civilian Pilot Training Program. After he had completed the program, he stayed as an instructor. During World War

Tuskegee Airmen Book Report

...University only 7 miles from Moton Field. The basic and advanced flight training took place at a much larger airfield called Tuskegee Army Air Field. Tuskegee Army Air Field is about 19 miles north of Moton Field. Cadets who were in the basic and advanced phases of flight training lived on base. The base had four paved runways and three large hangars. Each phase was about 9 weeks each. On average it took about 27 weeks to complete flight training. Graduation numbers were very impressive. The total number of pilots graduated is 996. The Air Force was very impressed with the cadets and the graduation numbers so they continued to fund the program. After months of waiting for an assignment the 99th squadron, under the leadership of LTC B.O. Davis, Jr. arrived in North Africa. Despite the hard tasks they were given, they proved themselves in combat. After the success of the 99th squadron, more groups were sent into war. The newly created 332nd squadron was the first squadron to be assigned to escort bombers. They were extremely successful. They did not lose one bomber on the first mission they ever flew. When they flew bomber missions they would fly the P-47 Thunderbolt airplanes. “Sometimes a P-47 was called a Jug.” Quotes Lt. Col. George Hardy in the book.
