Getting Started on LinkedIn

Create a LinkedIn profile at www.LinkedIn.com
Use your real name and personal e-mail address (the professional-sounding one!). Do not use your company’s address because you will likely change jobs. You can add other e-mail contact addresses once you have a profile.
For now, skip the option to import contacts. Wait until you are proficient and have a robust page for your contacts to view.

As soon as you have an account, you can start using the Search features.
In the Search box, the pull-down menu on the left allows you to focus the search on people, jobs, companies, and groups. You can use the Advanced Search feature for even more options.
Use LinkedIn to search for information on companies, jobs, and people. Look around the site and study the

Before you load your “Profile,” think about what you want to accomplish. Use the keywords that describe that objective or job in several places so that your profile pops up in searches (particularly in the items marked with an asterisk*). Your resume will give you good ideas of key terms to use.
When you are ready, from the Home page, click on “Profile.” Then, “Edit My Profile.” Fill in the blanks.

2. Select an industry – find one on the list that is the most relevant for you.

8. Change the back end of the URL to your name. click “Edit” next to the URL.
9. You may upload your resume, samples of your work, and links to your work.
Note: You can edit the profile any time.
