“Social media was born from sites not trying to change the way we behave or to provide us with extra information, it was just to assist our behaviour”
Well if you say it all started with Facebook or Orkut, you will be surprised. Social Networking has been in our past, present and will continue in our future. So when did it start exactly? To understand that let’s first understand what is social networking?
Social networking is about meeting new people and communicating with those whom you already know. So technically, social networking has been there for ages. The concerts, family functions, weddings, plays etc. can be termed as ways of social networking. However we consider the online networking as social networking. So let us focus on that part and see how it developed into what we have today.
The online social networking:
It’s about 6 C’s: 1. Communications 2. Connectedness 3. Common Experience 4. Content 5. Commerce 6. Cool Experiences (or Entertainment).
The online social networks mirror our offline lives.
It all started with CompuServe, which was the first online service to offer internet connectivity, albeit limited access, as early as 1989. It connected its proprietary e-mail service to allow incoming and outgoing messages to other Internet e-mail addresses. In early 1990’s, CompuServe was very popular with thousands of users visiting its numerous moderated forums, which can be called as the father of the blogs, forums and discussion sites that we have today. All these forums were managed by independent producers and later hired moderates called “sysops”.

Later CompuServe was able to attract the general public as well, with a wider range of Forums such as sports, politics etc. One of the biggest advantages of CompuServe was that

Social Networking and Its Effects on Interpersonal Communication

...Social media refers to the interactions through web-based and mobile-based technologies between individuals and societies in which they create, share and exchange information and ideas in virtual networks and communities (Social Media, 2013). An aspect of social media that is a current phenomenon in modern society is social networking, which consists of both mobile communication and web-based communication with Internet users through websites such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube and LinkedIn. These social networking websites have introduced a revolutionary means of communication that was not present in past decades. Interpersonal communication is defined as what one uses with both spoken and written words as the basis to form and maintain personal relationships with others (Heil, 2010). It focuses on investigating the interactions between individuals, which take the form of dyadic relationships as well as individuals within a social network. Some communication scholars consider the term interpersonal communication to be synonymous with interpersonal communication (Huo, 2011). With that, our interpersonal communication characteristics often determine how we communicate online (Palmer, 1995) and “the fact that most users create a sense of humanization in their emails makes their communication more interpersonal in nature” (Swats & Walther, 1995). In this modern society people can no longer consider the social media phenomenon as a "new thing" (Tardanico, 2012)...

Social Media

...negatively impacted many users’ lives. The immense popularity of social media has affected many aspects of the Internet: productivity levels, privacy, cyber bullying, and communication. So, parents, do something. If you want to see this generation and future generations of kids be saved from the bitter ways of the Internet, don’t just sit around and wait for a change. Be the change. Yes, the cheesy phrases of “protecting the corrupted” and “be the change” have been thrown into context, but that shouldn’t take away from underlying meaning. Although there are rewarding and beneficial aspects that are uncovered by social media, we must protect the future generations from being brainwashed by the ways of the Internet. The cruel, bitter faults from exposing personal information to the cyber world. Because the ways of life are changing and the unawareness of the negative impacts of social media has caused upsetting outcomes. So, I ask, to simply think and be aware of how social media can corrupt your children’s minds and disturb the peace there once was. Social media has become an easy and accessible way to communicate with others and yes, our future will involve social media. Lots of people believe more voices can be heard and important topics can be discussed within larger audiences. But although this may be of importance, face-to-face communication will become a thing of the past, diminishing real life relationships. Social media has made it difficult to distinguish between the bonds...

Fb Business Valuation

...fairly valued at 38.2 Billion Dollars but when superimposed on the dynamic pattern of internet businesses a valuation of 41.5 Billion dollars can be assumed a fair value. The company at present has a very strong impact and potential to grow in the near future but at the same time it faces a lot of risks that can put it out of business any time in the future. For Facebook to sustain it must diversify. In the light of new developments and information release regarding Facebook‘s business model, Goldman Sach‘s valuation of the company at 50 Billion dollars is opportunist. The reason for this discrepancy could be a conflict of interest as the company gets a priority while going public. This could also be because of the information limitation. Likelihood NPV (CF) NPV (TV) Facebook Valuation Optimistic Scenario 25% 50.31 10 Pessimistic Scenario 25% 27.68 2 Given the latest improvements and introduction of Facebook email and deals in April, 2011 and also potential talks of evolving it as a search engine with a one stop availability, the company can be valued up to 100 Billion dollars. Modern Technology

...internationally, thereby making us global citizens. In the past, the communicating and free sharing of thoughts among people were restricted by long distance, nationality and/or religion. But now, even these barriers cannot stop the flow of information and knowledge. The new world of social networking allows free sharing of thoughts. Online social networks are created by websites such as Facebook, which has emerged as a giant in this social world. So how do these networks affect our education? How do they influence the lives of students? Humans are social animals. We always like to remain in some group or another, and we prefer to follow what this group does. All of our traditions and cultures are the product of this group-oriented facet of human nature. A well-known American psychologist, Abraham Maslow, stated in his “Theory of Motivation” that the social need of human beings is the third most important requirement after our physical and safety needs — the third tier in his hierarchy of needs. Even our self-esteem comes after this social dependence. This is the main reason billions of people use social networking to stay connected, make friends and satisfy their social needs. As of 2015 the world’s largest social networking company, Facebook, has 1.49 billion active users, and the number of users is increasing every year. One of the most interesting things to look at is the increasing number of student users on such social networking sites. As per...

The Man Behind the Message

...Marshall McLuhan “The Man behind the message” A professor from Winnipeg, Marshall was one of the world’s most innovative thinkers. His theories about mass media turned him into a media guru. Arguably most famous for his quote “The medium is the message” Many would consider Marshall to be a brilliant man; others would say they don’t understand a word he is saying. I wonder how much thought his skeptics have put into what he had to say. I will agree that some of his theories are not clear at first but once dissected you begin to understand the man behind the message. “The message of any medium or technology is the change of scale or pace or pattern that it introduces into human affairs. The railway did not introduce movement or transportation or wheel or road into human society, but it accelerated and enlarged the scale of previous human functions, creating totally new kinds of cities and new kinds of work and leisure. This happened whether the railway functioned in a tropical or northern environment, and is quite independent of the freight or content of the railway medium. (Understanding Media, NY, 1964, p. 8) What McLuhan writes about the railroad applies with equal validity to the media of print, television, computers and now the internet. “The medium is the message” because it is the “medium that shapes and controls the scale and form of human association and action.” (E. McLuhan) Now, some may be thinking that they don’t understand the message of the preceding paragraphs...

Paradigm Shift Regarding Internet Dating and Social Networking

...Paradigm Shift regarding Internet Dating and Social Networking Social networking and internet dating are no longer the way of the future; they are the here and now. Not too long ago we as a society didn’t rely mainly on computers and cell phone texting as a primary source to keep in contact with people. We also didn’t use this technology to meet new people. There was a time and a place for everything, but staying at home to accomplish these task such as meeting new people was not one of them. When promised that you can find everlasting love why not stay at home and look. Eharmony states “traditional internet dating can be challenging for those singles looking for love that lasts. Imagine if you let your heart do the talking. What if I told you to put yourself out there because the right person for you will listen” (www.eharmony.com/home/free-your-heart). There were many different places people could socialize. Depending on the person, you had a wide variety of choices where to go to meet people. One could go to a club or bar, out with friends to a party, to the movies, at a grocery store, or even a sporting event. Friends, family, and even coworkers would even be known to set someone up on a blind date or meeting. Typically these were the “normal” ways to meet someone not that long ago, however nowadays the process is much more streamlined. It’s more like a drivethru window at a fast food restaurant. You go up to the menu, order what you want, go to the window, and...

Social Networking

...once seen as a medium that diminished social capital (Kraut et al, 1998). Now it is seen as a way that maintains social contact (Wellman et al, 2001). In the article Opening Closed Regimes, the writers wondered whether Mohammed Bouazizi believed he would play such a role in releasing a wave of protest for democracy in the Arab world. His story of stepping in front of a civic building in Tunisia and setting himself on fire in protest of the government was one of many that were retold on social networking sites in ways that stirred protesters to organise protests and criticise their governments. (Howard et al, 2011). Residents of the Arab nations used social media to help inform Western news teams about events on the ground. Social networking helped put a human face on political power and became a causation of the Arab Spring. Of the online tools, social networking sites have experienced the most prolific growth (Diffley et al, 2011). People spend hours connecting to others on social networks (McGrath, 2010). This evolution of social networking could not escape the corporations’ attentions, which are in constant search for new instruments meant to help them increase their market shares (Chis and Talpos, 2011). Studies by Forrester research show that spending on social networking will increase from $455 million in 2008 to $3.1billion in 2014, a 335% increase (Horovitz, 2009). Based on the above, my paper will focus on how social networking has become an indispensable tool for everyone...
