Introduction 1.1 The problem A problem of common occurrence in forensic science is the restoration of obliterated serial numbers on the chassis and engine of stolen motor vehicles, firearms, jewellery, valuable tools, and machinery (Nickols, 1956; Wolfer & Lee, 1960; Jackson, 1962; Cunliffe & Piazaa, 1980; De Forest & Gaensslen, 1983; Schaefer, 1987; O’Hara & O’Hara, 1994; Moenssens et al (1995); Heard, 1997; Petterd, 2000; Lyle, 2004; Katterwe, 2006; Seigel, 2007; Mozayani & Noziglia, 2006; Jackson et al (2008); Levin, 2010). Serial numbers or other markings, which are unique to that particular item, are usually marked on the above metal surfaces during the manufacturing process. Criminals alter or obliterate these identification marks during thefts or other illegal uses in order to prevent their identity. On many occasions a fraudulent number would be introduced after removing the original one. In abandoned vehicles all serial numbers are verified in order to detect alterations in the identity of the vehicle (Svensson et al, 1981). Sometimes the serial numbers on firearms are removed more professionally making it hard to distinguish whether the numbers are original or not (Shoshani et al, 2001). As an arbiter between the spiritual and the mundane world, he not only provides services in healing and divination but also performs vital roles at temple and spirit festivals. The history of Chinese spirit mediumship can be traced to the Shang Dynasty of the second millennium B.C., where priest-shamans (wu) were accorded high official standing in the imperial courts, until their decline in the late Chou period in the third century B.C.1 However, spirit mediumship did not become obsolete but continued to be practised at the popular level (Yang 1967: 106, 303). Few reports of spirit mediumship in modern China have appeared in print, except for the detailed observations of De Groot (1964) made in the southern provinces in the late nineteenth century. It is reportedly that the first wine producer was Lafaro, a local company founded by Nguyen Huu Duc in 1974. This company imported a new variety of dau tam to produce its wine. Unfortunately, the company stopped to operate in 1975. Nguyen Chi Man, a 80-year-old man, who did distribute this wine at that time, asked the company's owner this variety of mulberry' seeds to grow, then to make wine for his own consumption and later on for his small business in Dalat. Since then, other traditional wine makers follow him to open wine factories and mulberry plantations, especially in Bong Lai. Because of their small scale, they did not build up particular brand name for their wine. Dalat wine has been considered effectively as a “geographical indication”.
