Kushner discusses God’s role in tragedy and how humans should respond. Kushner states that a common response to tragedy is, “Why would God allow this to happen?” He says that there is no answer to this question and that he does not know why bad things happen to good people. However, he says that it is not God who is causing the tragedy. He states that we live in an imperfect world where things will happen that are beyond our control. Kushner says that the best way to deal with tragedy is to understand that God did not cause the tragedy and that he is weeping with us. He also states that we must ask ourselves what we can do to get over it and prevent it from happening to anybody else instead of asking ourselves why God would allow it to happen. Whatever the method, the audience will want to discover it. In general, the audience will find out whether the speech is delivered from memory, from manuscript, or extempore; and, if the latter, whether the man spoke with or without notes. The orator’s notes, when obtainable, also throw light upon the total portrait of a speaker. They give some hint as to the way in which ideas are integrated; how effectively the orator controls the details; and how he adapts a previously prepared plan to the exigencies of a particular audience situation. The orator’s own reflections on his method, when obtainable, are of real service. Some orators, for instance, use extempore method of delivery; they neither write the speech in full nor commit it to memory. However, they frequently write out and memorize their introductions and conclusions, as well as selected illustrations in the body of certain speeches. A second inquiry which may yield interesting information on the ways of an orator is: Do the speaker’s physical characteristics contribute to his effectiveness? Having these two things will help you deliver your speech and make you look better when you deliver your speech. If you give a speech that you know absolutely nothing about, you’re going to look like a fool. Ronald Reagan’s speech was good because he had good posture, he made direct eye contact, he was well-dressed and he had knowledge of what he was talking about. If you want to have a good speech, you should make sure that you use these important things. Using good aesthetics will improve your performance or score on your speech. You should make sure that you keep eye contact with the audience. Keeping eye contact with your audience will ensure you that they are interested in your speech (“Using Eye”). It can also give you feedback. When you are delivering a speech, you want to move around a little. But, you should know your environment and your audience to know how much you can move around without getting them distracted or running into something. ...Abubakr Mohamed 1. What I most liked about my speech was the first three and a half minutes because I started out my speech with confidence and strong voice that carries throughout the room. I also followed my outline and stick to it which made my purpose clear and showed the importance of the topic to the audience. Moreover my eye contacts was on entire audience , my posture was good , legs did not cross, no leaning on podium, and my hands movement was minimal and did not move too much which is the case when I usually talk to people. I think I also was able to show the importance of my topic to audience by getting their attention. I avoided making my speech to technical so it will be easy for those who are not familiar with the topic to understand. 2. After the three and a half minutes I started to rely heavily on my outline instead of eye contact and that the main point I need to work on. Also, I had multiple problems with stumbling over my words and using fill in words instead of speaking clearly and using very descriptive words. Furthermore, I saw that I tended to sway a lot, and that is something I will consciously try to fix during my next speech. In term of content, my outline needed more information and examples that will encourage the audience to ask questions after the speech and that will reflect their interest in my speech. ...Journal #1 My speech wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be, but it could have been better if I put more time into getting more information from my partner. The body paragraphs needed to give more information and go into more detail. Although it wasn’t that bad of a speech giving the thought that we met up for about thirty minutes. Back in high school when someone was giving a speech, we, the audience always tried to make them laugh, or simply just didn’t pay attention to the speaker and did something else. Now the audience was paying attention and being respectful which calmed me down when giving my speech. As the speaker I needed to be more enthusiastic while giving my speech, because how is the audience going to be interested if I don’t even seem interested. I noticed very few people glancing at their phones or just with a blank look in their face; this made me relax a little more for some reason. Practicing your speech timing is critical. If you are given twenty minutes of speaking time, read your speech allowed to yourself or maybe a family member and have a timer with you. ...With this informative speech being the second speech I have given in this class, I would have to say that it was a little jumbled compared to my narrative. I was very apprehensive about this speech and I feel that came out through my speaking. I was very confident about the topic I was speaking on, but I feel the broadness of the topic threw me off a little bit. Overall, I am satisfied with my speech but know I have some weaknesses to work on. But besides the weaknesses, I was happy with some of my strengths in my speech. In the beginning of my speech, I feel I did a good job starting off with a couple interesting facts and emphasizing a pause between the two. I know we talked about the importance of pauses in speeches, which I felt I did a good job with last time, so I tried to following actions from the last speech. Along with the pauses, I feel that I had a decent amount of voice inflection through my speech. I did tend to stumble a few times throughout my speech, but I thought I did an ok job changing the tone of my voice. Also, I feel that my movement went alright through the speech. I did begin to shift my weight when I would stumble on a sentence or point, but otherwise I did attempt to move after my intro and body. Lastly, I think I did a good job of using proper hand gestures.
