Situational Audit
The Goodman Company manufactures small rubber automotive parts. They make boots for floor mounted automobile and truck transmissions, boots for brakes, and clutch and accelerator pedals. At the end, these products are sold to assembly plants for new cars and trucks.
The president of the Goodman Company is Mr. Robert Goodman. Joes Smith is the production manager. Under Joe Smith they are three supervisors, one for each shift of work. Shift one is supervised by Mr. Cleverson Anthony, shift two supervised by Mr. Norm Leonard and the third shift by Bob Jackson.
The company has been doing very well given the fact that the plant is fully staffed on each shift. Recently the plant has been working six days a week to keep up with increased orders.
Being the good businessman Mr. Goodman is, the increase in demand for his products prompts him to explore the option of expanding his company. Any increase in production must occur within the present physical plant, because money is not available for a proposed multi-million dollar expansion that was thought about. The purchase of new equipment is also out of the question so Mr. Goodman decides to hire a production analyst in Ms. Ann Bennett to see if greater efficiency can be achieved.
Ann Bennett has a bachelor’s degree in Finance with a concentration in Production Management. She graduated with first class honours.
Before Ann Bennett implemented her changes the entire production process was handled by each worker. Currently the process is done based on a mass production format where one worker will be assigned to do a specific part of the production process. She also changed the payment system from an hourly rate of pay to payment based on a piece rate system. Although these changes seemed like a good idea they proved not to be totally effective since output decreased on the first and second shifts whilst the third shift was able to maintain their level of output.

Timothy Coombs Eastern Illinois University Previous research based on Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) suggests that an organization’s past crises history affects the reputational threat posed by a current crisis when that crisis results from intentional acts by the organization. The study reported on in this article provides a wider test of crisis history to better assess its role in crisis communication. Results from the present investigation showed that a history of similar crises intensified the reputational threat of a current crisis even when the crisis arose from the victimization of the organization or from an accident, rather than from the organization’s intentional acts. The threat to reputation was primarily direct, rather than indirect, through perceived responsibility for the crisis. There was little difference in the perceptions of organizations identified as having had no history of past similar crises versus those for whom no information about past crises was provided. Perception of an organization’s responsibility was negatively correlated with the perceived impact on reputation. Qualitative methods have been used in order to understand the feelings and experiences of employees while working in a politically influenced environment. Analysis of the data was done through phenomenological principles. Findings of this study led to the emergence of four major themes namely perceived threat, attitude towards the players, Coping Strategies and intentions to leave. When the obligation is based on moral and ethical considerations, it is a moral duty. Often we think about moral duties in terms of rules that restrain us, the “don’ts,” as in don’t lie, cheat, or steal. Such rules comprise the so-called negative dimension of moral duty because they tell us what not to do. Since ethics is concerned with the way we ought to be, however, it also includes an affirmative dimension consisting of things we should do — keep promises, judge others fairly, treat people with respect, kindness and compassion. Sources of Moral Obligation Moral obligations can arise from three sources. The first, strangely enough, is law. 1. Law-Based Moral Obligations. Good citizens have a moral as well as a legal obligation to abide by laws; it is part of the assumed social contract of a civilized society. If a law is unjust, however, (such as those that mandated ethnic and religious persecution during the Nazi regime and those that discriminated against a person on the basis of race in South Africa and elsewhere) there may be a moral obligation to disobey it under the specific and demanding doctrine of civil disobedience.
