This almost inevitable phenomena has made its way into organizations where gossip and gossipmongers are mostly seen in a negative light. But is that always the case? How about when you hear from a third person that one of your peers might be rewarded for his/her outstanding performance, for the most part you are motivated to perform well. Gossip has its downside but not always. Introduction Exchange of information through informal communication network or channel i.e. unverified information, often referred to as grapevine activity; rumor or gossip, is circumstantially derived, comes into existence unplanned (Michelson & Mouly, 2004) and is almost unavoidable in organizations (Michelson & Mouly, 2002). Although it can affect workplace such as by decreasing productivity and creating stress (DiFonzo, Bordia, & Rosnow 1994), it’s not a very well-researched phenomena (Noon, & Delbridge, 1993). Rumor is defined as unsubstantiated talk that lacks evidence whereas gossip is regarded as idle talk that ignores factuality (Noon, & Delbridge, 1993). Very often writers themselves have written through their own “madness” and produced mad characters as a result. This is particularly true of many of the leading figures in Modernism, who all seem to have had some odd character traits. But even before Modernism the madman/woman was a very popular figure in literature. Just think of Shakespeare’s famous plays, where we encounter lunatics en masse. One of the most famous madwomen in English literature is Bertha, the locked up wife of Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre. In this paper I will look at Victorian madness in general and at the figure Bertha more closely. Furthermore I will also look, from a somewhat feminist perspective, at Wide Sargasso Sea, a novel in which Jean Rhys takes up the figure of Bertha again. I shall try to explain this rewriting of a canonical text in a postcolonial context. Historical Madness Early in the Victorian period the madness seems to be lurking in the shadows – especially in gothic fiction, but then madness was very much on everybody’s mind in those days. ...Summary Opinions about the consequences of happiness on work differ. There is no research on the effects of life-satisfaction on productivity but there is a lot of research on the link between job satisfaction and work performance. This research shows modestly positive correlations with productivity, absenteeism and labour turnover. These correlations tend to be stronger among white collar workers. It is still largely unclear to what extent satisfaction effects productivity or vice versa. See Scheme 1. There are different claims about the effect of happiness on productivity. Some think that the enjoyment of life will produce involvement and smooth interaction, thus boosting productivity. Others rather expect that happiness will reduce the motivation to seek improvement and make them passive and dull. There is no research on the effects of overall happiness or life-satisfaction on productivity. However, there is a lot of research on the relationship between job satisfaction and work performance. Job satisfaction is quite highly correlated with overall happiness, and can be looked at as one of its main components. Hence the results of the available research data are at least suggestive in this discussion. The Human Relations movement, of Elton Mayo and others, believed that job satisfaction had beneficial effects, including increased work performance (Argyle, 1988).
