The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, is a fast-paced, gripping, and intelligent depiction of what too much government intervention could lead to. The story is led by Katniss Everdeen, a 16 year old who finds herself in the country of Panem, a futuristic North America, where she is elected to participate in the Hunger Games. There, she struggles with her emotions and her will to survive in the arena. The book, intended for a teenage audience, is filled with strong emotional and physical challenges, which Katniss was forced to overcome. Through this journey, the author portrays the good and evil of power. “I volunteer!” said Katniss. “I volunteer as tribute!” A tribute is allowed to sacrifice themselves for another person, taking that person out of the danger of the games. The author immediately draws the reader into this character as she becomes a substitute for her sister. Yet, the most meaningful point that author clearly was trying to develop was government and the dictatorship of the capitol. As I said earlier, the government punished the districts with the hunger games. They forced it upon them, with no way of escape. This is one way the author illustrates how government power can be used for evil. At the climax of the book, Katniss and Peeta, the other tribute from District 12, were the last ones left fighting in the arena. But there could only be one winner. Both of them didn’t like the government’s power and control over the hunger games, so they decided to drink poison in the end, which would have defeated the purpose of the games, because there wouldn’t have been a winner. Even though the government stopped them from the suicide attempt, Katniss and Peeta stood up against the Capitol and made them look bad. I could hardly put it down! Collins uses a casual, first person style of writing, which draws the audience into the action. In fact, the words aren’t what makes this book such a great read. Collins’ writing makes the reader so attracted to the main character that you can’t put it down. It’s almost as if the words disappear, and there is nothing but Katniss and the reader. Even though the plot in this book seems to be an original idea, it actually is much like a Japanese novel entitled Battle Royale. Some critics even believe that Collins based the hunger games off of it. Battle Royale has a similar storyline, and relies heavily on gruesome details to keep the book interesting. But it just doesn’t have the character connections that Collin’s novel
