...Sydni Craig 000108021 Professor Bailey T and TR April 6, 2016 The Fourth of July In the story, the Fourth of July, by Audre Lorde the little girl is telling the story of a graduation present of going to Washington D.C. As a graduation present from graduating from the eighth and older sister from graduating from high school. And it says that she received the best graduation present but I agree to disagree with the people, who would say she received the best graduation present. I agree with going to Washington D.C. was the best graduation gift the eighth grader could receive. I agree because at a young age especially since she will be going to high school, it is great for her to see everything at firsthand of what the world was like during that time. It gives her an idea of how the world looks like in 1947, were as she is always being hidden from it and not telling what has been going on. But I can also disagree because her parents should explain to her in detail of what was going on, and I also disagree with that being a graduation present and it being the best present she will ever receive. She went through the process of seeing how and what life really is at her age and how it will be for the next couple of years. The world at the year if 1947 was full of racism and discrimination in which it is bad in some states, but also horrible in others. The young girl in the story witnesses her family and not be treated right at firsthand. The thing that was messed up about the...

...I was a consistent honor student, a Student Leader and a member of Girl Scout of the Philippines. I am always the representative of our batch, especially during academic and non-academic competitions. Sometimes I won but when I didn’t, I pride myself in knowing that I did my best. I remember the time when I joined a searched for Mr. and Ms. United Nations, I was a grade six student back then, and luckily I won as 2nd runner-up. During the last ladder of my elementary life, I enjoyed the company of my batch, ups and downs, happy and sad, we shared memories together. My mentors really molded me to become one of the best. At the graduation day, I was the valedictorian in our batch. For me, it was the reward after the six long years of sacrifices and unforgettable experiences I had encounter. Above all these, making my parents proud was my intention all along and I know that I got it. Seeing my mother with tears of joys in her eyes during my graduation made me feel like I just won the presidency election and that was in fact a moment of success for me. But you know what’s really hard on achieving those? It’s that I don’t have my father beside...

But they were fucked up in their turn By fools in old-style hats and coats, Who half the time were soppy-stern And half at one another’s throats. Man hands on misery to man. ...Ruth Onuoha Professor Geoffery Saari ENGL 1302 05/08/2018 The Significance of Joy/Hulga’s two names in “Good Country People.” The name Joy means happiness, bliss or delight but these are not words Joy Hopewell use to describe how she feels about herself. Joy does not mean happiness because happiness is based on material things such as celebrating birthdays or graduations. In fact, Joy is deeper, it is something special from God that can be felt even when one is sad or unhappy. Joy Hopewell is a very intelligent woman with a Ph.D. in Philosophy but has disabilities that make her a sad and angry person. The name Hulga represents her incomplete self because she wears a wooden leg and she has a heart problem. Joy does not see anything joyful in her life, so she changes her name to Hulga. Because she feels it is an ugly name fit for an unattractive woman....

Without affirmative action these rates of graduation would not be possible for the minorities of America. During the 1960s the affirmative action law passed and required employers, as well as colleges, to not discriminate against any employee or applying employee based on race, ethnicity, creed, or national origin. Affirmative action is still necessary in America today because minorities continue to receive inadequate education compared to their white counterparts, minorities continue to live at or below the poverty line; And many minority youths would not be afforded the opportunity to attend and graduate college without affirmative action....

...word of God in this life would guarantee salvation in the next. In Nomi’s town, “you’re good or you’re bad” (pg. 10). There was no in between, no room for individuality or mistakes. Those who went through their life there quietly, going to church every Sunday and working at the local chicken slaughtering plant after graduation, were considered to be on their way up. These people were the ones who, at the end of their long journey, will meet the Lord and live forever in His kingdom of glory, but those who rebelled against the belief were going straight to hell. As Nomi’s older sister Natasha begins to question their faith, Nomi lives in perpetual terror that her sister is going to hell. Their father is a strong believer; the church is what glues his soul together. And although their mother grew up in the community, she had always been an independent thinker, and could not watch her oldest daughter suffer for a lifetime in a place she hated, following a religion she could no longer identify with. After Nomi’s mother and Natasha leave East Village, Nomi is faced with living in a broken family, and begins to question her faith as well. While trying to avoid the sad existence that seems inevitable if she stays in the community, Nomi dreams of a life in the real world, but can’t seem to get up the courage it will take to leave. Nomi explores the world of drugs and rebellion to escape because she is tired of being trapped in East Village. The narrative, which is from Nomi’s perspective...

...deep experience when I first came to college, assuming that I would have to put so much effort in to be a part in this country, a place where I felt strange, new and as if I am an alien. I have never been so uncomfortable feeling lonely and homesick. Everything started from the airport. I had no idea time flies so quick. After high school graduation ceremony to the time I found out I had to leave. My girlfriend, my friends, my family all attended the event. I should have been happy that moment, because I have such a good relationship with different people. I was smiling the whole time, but actually crying inside. I acted as if I was tough enough to face all difficulties which were coming, but the truth was I was not ready at all. Although it was heartbreaking, knowing I would be leaving in less than an hour , taking a flight across 7000 miles and had no idea when would I actually be able to see my friends, family again. I was not the only one who was unhappy. My mother was crying as if her eyes were swimming in the ocean. I came to face reality that I was boarding to the plane. The cool air in the aircraft at once made me feel lonely and sad. I could not even sleep for a minute on the plane, images flowing all over my head. Will people treat me the same? Will I make good friends? How are the teachers going to treat me? During the flight, I had Different questions running around my head. The first month in the states was the loneliest month I had ever experienced in my entire...

...As an 18 year old kid, on the verge of graduation, I had endless possibilities ahead of me. I could go to college. I could take a year or two to travel; maybe backpack through Europe. Heck, I could spend the summer sleeping in late and hanging out with my friends before setting off on my next adventure. The point is, high school was about to end and I was the captain of my own ship for the first time. I was about to embark on an uncharted voyage to whatever destination I desired with nothing to keep me from fulfilling my dreams and desires. At least that’s what I thought. My whole world was about to change and I was totally unaware. The bomb dropped about a month before graduation, and my ship sank like a ton of bricks. My girlfriend Christy was pregnant. Instead of being a young man about to take on the world, I was going to be a father. I honestly don’t remember how I felt when she first told me. I think mostly I was just numb. I remember her sitting across from me in the passenger seat of my Volkswagen Beetle, tears streaming down her face, gasping for breath through her sobs. She was terrified. I was too, but I knew I had to get my act together and try to be strong for us both. I mean, I was the man, right? I stretched across to her seat and tried as best I could to hold her and comfort her. I didn’t know what to say, so I just kept telling her everything would be ok, we would figure things out together, and that I loved her. I guess that’s what she needed because she started...

...latest one month, I clearly remember that I have a vivid dream that my mum ask me to manage my own Outbound Service Agency in USA for those Chinese people who cannot speak English to provide professional consultant services. My mother has come to America two times so that she feels America is a best place for her to live in for long time. She told me in the dream that China is not safe, for example, foods and beverages always have toxic elements, class distinction get worse those days that may cause social disturbance and so on. I have pressure of getting a position in the US, because nowadays non-citizen students outside America are difficult to find a job or get valid US. Working visa. When I wake up, I feel deeply sad that I do have pressure now after my graduation. Theory 1: Dreams Create Wisdom If we remembered every image of our waking lives, it would clog our brains. So, dreams sort through memories, to determine which ones to retain and which to lose. Matt Wilson, at MIT's Center for Learning and Memory, largely defends this view. He argues that sleep is the process through which we separate the memories worth encoding in long-term memory from those worth losing. Sleep turns a flood of daily information into what we call wisdom: the stuff that makes us smart for when we come across future decisions. I think the reason why this dream is important to me is memory. My mother always said that to me over time, so it has become a impression in my mind. Theory 2:The Evolutionary...

...Fellow graduates, each of us will soon receive our diploma. In a few minutes, this occasion will culminate and soon we will go on our separate paths to our chosen fields in the quest for truth, justice wisdom and the illusive word, SUCCESS. But before we part and bid each other goodbye, let me askyou the meaning of this diploma to our parents, to teachers and to us ….graduates. What is it’s significance to our country? What is it’s relationship to the ideology of the Filipino people? Perhaps, some from this gathering have different views and conception of graduation and the diploma we will be receiving, the significance and importance of quality education to man’s life. I have a few from among a group of people who said that the diploma is a useless scrap of paper, a worthless thing that can never fill an empty stomach nowadays that our nation is suffering or experiencing a great economic as well as political turmoils, a piece of paper is no longer of great value in our present setup where the prevailing law is the survival of the fittest where the strong rules the weak and the weak follows the strong. Indeed, we canmnot fully blame those people for it might have been desperation that caused them to abandon their faith, hope, eagerness and will power to continue their struggles to pursue higher education. But let me tell you, in behalf of this year’s graduates not to lose hope, not to succumb to these failures, to this bitterness…. for life is not that cruel. The man above...

My grandma was telling me how if I don’t get it and go through with it she will never talk to me, never send me money or let me go to California to visit, the worst part was she said she wouldn’t come to my graduation and she knew how much that meant to me. As much as they told me I wasn’t ready to have a kid, that I still have so much ahead of me the only thing I was thinking was that the man above did this to me for a reason, and I will not turn my back on a blessing he has given me. Weather it’s for me to find my own happiness or to have my family become closer I know he did it for a reason and that’s why I decided to keep my little blessing in my...

In order to do that, we have to think and ask questions to find the answers that help us shape our train of thought, our sense of truth. In answering these questions, we form these ideas of what we believe to be the ... quality of life or just reality/realities in general. Then, we begin to further explore those ideas, asking more questions, and working to find clarification, to find knowledge. As we gather more of that knowledge, we shape our own beliefs and state of mind, finding out more of who we are as individuals. Our soul, our very being, is a reflection of that knowledge. It shows our uniqueness, our individuality, because no one else reacts in exactly the same way we do. We may share some similarities, but, overall, we are out own person. We continue to change as we gather more knowledge, and apply that knowledge to our lives. My life has taken me on quite a roller coaster ride. I was born two months early, in ****...

...Violence that Follows Bullied Gay Teens in High School Science Perspective on Global Problems: Aggression and Violence Today in society we push our teenagers and young adults to strive well with their academics in high school. With that being said, there are so many unknown factors that come with it. With trying to strive with academics in high school, teenagers and young adults deal with those un-surfaced factors. They may have to deal with fitting in at school, per pressure, not being confident and cultural differences. These factors are all equally important but a factor that makes it almost unbarring to learn is Bullying. Although bullying affects all victims, one group in particular that is bullied the most is self-identifying gay teens in high schools (Wallace 2011).In my research I am going to note the facts on what it is to bully a gay class mate, the reaction from schools, how often it happens, why it happens, the consequences, and how bullying can be stopped in high schools. Research by Wallace (2011) suggests that bullying is a form of horrible harassment. Wallace (2011) said that conduct that is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive to limit a student’s ability to participate in or benefit from a public school education program or activity is considered bullying. Research by Fleming ,Meadows, Bob (2010) say that bullying creates a hostile or abusive educational environment at a public school including acts of verbal, nonverbal, and physical aggression...

...that he wants to make a healthcare reform to improve people’s lives. Healthcare is a part of social security, it shows that social security is really cared about everyone in America, and it may have some serious problem now. According to ‘THE 2014 U.S. AND WORLD POPULATIONS’ written by Robert Schlesinger in U.S. News (http://www.usnews.com/opinion/blogs/robert-schlesinger/2013/12/31/us-population-2014-317-million-and-71-billion-in-the-world) America now has more than 317 million people with 5793 hospitals. It may sounds a lot, but if shared out equally, a hospital might service for almost 55000 people. Especially 5008 hospitals are community hospitals that don’t have enough resource and enough area. It’s not great any more. Besides, the truth is, because of different developmental level of different cities, hospitals don’t share out equally. Then, it sounds badly. Even in the United States, a superpower country, people cannot get an excellent healthcare system. And the worse thing is, not only the healthcare system, some others thing about social security also cannot be enough to citizens. So, someone must have questions, since America is strong and democratic, why the government doesn’t pay more attention to social security problems and...
