Personal Responsibility

...Kimball Personal Responsibility Sometimes, it is easier to let someone else make decisions, but everyone will come to a moment in their lives when they need to be the one to take control. When this moment happens, the person who makes the choices and decisions will establish a level of personal responsibility. I plan to discuss what person responsibility means, how I apply personal responsibility to life and my college experience, and I will show a plan to practice personal responsibility. The concept of personal responsibility can be impossible to define, as it is a relative term. Everyone has his or her own thoughts and ideas on what it entails. In Dr. Frank Thomas’s manuscript American Dream 2.0: A Christian Way Out of the Great Recession, he says that “When personal responsibility is defined as a person’s ‘response-ability,’ that is, the ability of a person to maturely respond to the various challenges and circumstances of life.” (Thomas, 2012). I appreciate like how Dr. Frank Thomas’s definition captured the idea that of how a person responds to moments in life can show where their personal responsibility lies. I recently have had the opportunity to utilize my personal responsibility. I have chosen a career path in accounting and have taken that next step by working toward a Bachelor of Science in Business Major in Accounting. In the accounting industry, by earning your degree, there are more job opportunities and a degree can open more doors. Having spent years...

Econ 502

...Great Recession and the FED’s failure to predict it The Great Recession lasted from December 2007 until June 2009. It was unclear in mid-2008 that the economy was actually going to experience a severe recession, based on the information available at the time. The FMOC reacts to both current data and forecasts for what is to come in formulating its policy. In the following few pages, I’ll set out a narrative of what the FED discovered the economy was doing, and I’ll describe the policy actions it pursued to deal with the changes in the economy from June 2008 to December 2008. This was the midst of the Great Recession, though by looking at the statements from the FED, one wouldn’t tell. The statements from the Federal Open Market Committee in the months June, August and September show relatively ‘calm economic weather’ with a mildly negative outlook. It’s not until the unscheduled meeting of October 8 2008 that the committee mentions a financial crisis. In this narrative, you’ll find the statements from the first three months grouped together and the statements from the second three months grouped together. June – September 2008 The press releases in June, August and September of 2008 are largely similar in terms of the message they convey, and even use the same sentences in big parts of the statements. In the following tables you’ll find a summary of the description of the current economic activity, the future economic expectations and the policies pursued by the FED. In...

Summay

...Summary Roger Lowenstein thought that the current Great Recession could drive a stake through the efficient-market hypothesis (EMH). Analogously, Jeremy Grantham claimed that the incredibly inaccurate efficient market theory cased a lethally dangerous result that led to current plight. However, the EMH is not responsible for the current crisis. Eugene Fama stated that the prices of securities reflect all known information that impacts their value. The hypothesis implies that the prices in the market are mostly wrong, and it is hard to say whether they are too high or too low. Regulators wrongly believed that financial firms were offsetting their credit risks, while the banks and credit rating agencies underestimated the risk in real estate. EMH is not an excuse by the CEOs and regulators of failed financial firms. After the 1982 recession, the U.S. and world economies entered into a long fluctuations period which called the “Great Moderation”. Risk premiums shrank and individuals and firms took on more leverage. Prof. Robert Shiller collected the data which indicates from 1945 through 2006 the maximum cumulative decline in the average price of homes. This low volatility might lead to the mortgage security composed of a nationally diversified portfolio of loans would have never come close to defaulting. These models led credit agencies to rate these subprime mortgages as “investment grade”. But this assessment was faulty. In fact, never before have home prices jumped that far...

...The talk Biblio Service Michaela Haase Jackall, R., The World of Corporate Managers – Twentieth Anniversary Edition, Oxford University Press, New York 2010 A Capsule Summary of the Book This is the second edition of a book whose first edition was published in 1988. There has been no revision of the book; however, Jackall has added a new chapter titled “Moral Mazes and the Great Recession” to it. His description of the financial crisis brings nothing really new to the fore: it shows that nothing has changed in the aftermath of the convulsions caused by several occurrences of crisis in the financial sector or the business world in the last decade. Managers (of banks, insurance enterprises, of Enron, etc.) play(ed) high-risk games at the cost of the organization; they plunder(ed) the assets of employees and shareholders as well. If they win, they take all the gain; if they lose, they call for the taxpayer’s money because their organizations are too big to fail. They never think about stinting with their bonuses even if the taxpayers have to save the organization they work for because otherwise these same managers would leave it and so dispossess it of their skills and competence which, so they think, are badly needed to set it afloat again. Objective and Targeted Audience Jackall’s detailed sociological study of the managerial world is not written for a particular target group. As Jackall has clarified throughout a recent interview,1 his study is “part of a larger project...

Wall Street Journal Project

...com/articles/gdp-expanded-at-4-2-rate-in-second-quarter-1409229416 Gross Domestic Product The purpose of Mr. Leubsdorf’s article was to explain how the current GDP exceeded prior expectations. Ben went into great detail about the encouraging direction of not only the GDP but also of unemployment. The overall feeling of the article was that though “The worst recession since the Great Depression ended in June 2009, but the recovery has been slow and halting. The second-quarter rebound assuaged worries about a prolonged slowdown following the first quarter's stumble”. Though these current numbers are encouraging Mr. Leubsdorf warns that this current acceleration is not likely to be sustained. Summary The estimate of the current GDP back in December was 2.8% to 3.2%, and was then downgraded in June to 2.1% to 2.3%. The actual growth of 4.2% was a welcome surprise to economists as was the 200,000 jobs added in 6 consecutive months. Ben attributes this to consumer purchasing growth in items such as new cars as well as businesses spending on new buildings and equipment. The unintended consequence to this information could be a positive one in which it creates consumer confidence and furthers this steady incline of GDP numbers. Though the growth is at this point slow, it is heading the right direction. Climbing out of the 2007 recession has been at times compared to climbing out of a sand pit, the current numbers can be seen as encouraging. U.S. Jobs Report: 288,000 Positions Added Unemployment Falls to 6.1%...
