Gustave Caillebotte's masterpiece Paris Street: Rainy Day was finished in early 1877 and can be found on page 62 in our textbook Understanding Art. I love Caillebotte's painting for many reasons, his carefully crafted surfaces and his well-conceived perspectival space. His painting was almost billboard size and distinctly bold, it was thoroughly bold but strangely empty. Caillebotte's famous painting Paris Street: Rainy Day is different in its realism and dependence on line rather than thick brush strokes. His painting forms the large space and strengthens the concept of emotional and social distance between people. Paris Street: Rainy Day is a illustration of human non-interaction. Gustave Caillebotte's painting is now owned by the Art Institute
