...Hairspray is a classic film that was released in 1988 as well as again in 2007. The version that I watched was the newest adaptation. It contained an all-star cast, which includes John Travolta, Zac Efron, Michelle Pfiefer and many other great actors. I found this film to be easy to watch. The musical numbers were a great touch to the film, as they often served to get a strong message across. I found it very inspiring how Tracy Turnblad was unaffected by people taunting her overweightness. She used the teasing as motivation to show the world that she was a good dancer and that she could make it onto the Corny Collins Show. In every movie, the character that is the underdog usually becomes my favorite. Hairspray didn’t prove that wrong because again, Tracy won my vote for most encouraging and likeable character. Another aspect of the film that I really enjoyed was diversity of characters. They came in all different sizes, colors, and economic backgrounds. This made Hairspray more relatable as well as realistic, which is good because it did touch upon some sadly realistic topics such as racism and obesity. Like I mentioned, racism was the biggest social justice issue portrayed in the film. Hairspray took place in Baltimore during the 1960’s, so people were still very uneasy of the whole treating people equally idea. The Corny Collins Show was an afternoon TV program that most teenagers watched. It featured dancers and singers from the Baltimore area and they were known for being...

...1) Yes, they were believable and realistic. The interaction and chemistry between mother and daughter were believable because of how they were coping and responding to one another, it seemed like real emotions. How the volume of their voice would go higher and lower depending on the mood and their hand gestures were accurate to their emotions. For example, when Edna Turnblad was angry with Tracy Turnblad, her daughter, Edna’s hand gestures would move a lot, be raised up or even pointing to her daughter, as if Edna was really mad at Tracy. Facial expressions in this play made it easier to believe the characters were real because when certain characters would be angry, their facial expressions would be eye squinting and nose crunching and other characters would react and respond to these expressions so well that really drove me to believe that they were real. The reaction of other characters would differ from the emotions given by another character, whether a character is being funny, fierce, serious, joyful or angry. 2) All the characters were related to one another, and it did seem like they were related in real life with real relationships. They all listened and responded to every character and their reactions would be as accurate as mine would be if those situations were to happen to me. They came together powerfully as an ensemble because out of all the songs and dances in this musical, I did not see a single mistake or error. The choreography and melody were perfectly...

...Over the course of this lab, I was surprised to learn that many household substances didn’t have the pH I originally expected them to. Of course, items like windex or vinegar that fall into the typical definition of acidic or basic items weren’t that shocking, but many other substances such as nail polish, shampoo, mouthwash, and hairspray defied my expectations. For example, I had anticipated that hairspray would be more acidic, but the pH strip immediately turned a dark green, identifying as having a pH of about 9 and being consequently basic in nature. Because bases are usually household cleansers, I thought that hairspray wouldn’t be anywhere near basic considering that it does almost the exact opposite of a cleaning product, turning every...

...Wearing miniskirts and drinking a couple of beers while grooving to rap music, Tracy loves to party. Her parents don’t know. Why should they? Tracy is eighteen! She can choose whether she wants to learn or have fun. Last year she had her parents looking after her, providing her with food and shelter. Today, because of her vast experience with adulthood from her teenage years, Tracy is empowered with enough skills to take care of herself in college. Her parents truly believe their beloved daughter is going to classes and being a self-reliant adult, but because of the extreme privacy Tracy receives, she can lie to her parents all she wants. Student surveillance aids with the safety and integrity of the school and helps parents make sure that their child is on the right track(Willens)(Conan). Many people believe college is an ideal place to practice adult responsibility and independence in an environment where the stakes are relatively low (Griffin). However, the years that determine the rest of the student’s life can not be taken lightly. Grades and skills acquired in college enable the student to get a decent job in order to support him/her. Faced with a great deal of important judgements mixed with tons of sovereignty, the student enters a rough transition into adulthood which takes place too soon. If the student decides to slack off freshman year, then the rest of his/her college year is affected negatively. Students are given adulthood responsibility too soon(Willens). According...

...The acting in the movie was pretty natural, take Reese Weatherspoon’s character Tracy Flick. The overachiever who wants everything and will do anything to get everything. Reese Weatherspoon’s character was snarky, smart, devilish and bratty, her acting was superior and showed it at her every scene. She played her Tracy character to the point, where we can actually believe that she could really be that mean of a person. For example, the time when she failed to fix her banner and disappointment happened. Instead of just making a new one to mount on the school hall, she looked at Paul Metzler’s poster and became more angry. You can see in her eye that she blamed Paul for everything that is going wrong. The presidency at her school was in the...

...Anyone who has used that comforting phrase “perfect curls” invariably means curler or straightener. Secondly, hair should be protected from the heat the straightener or curler has, -that is, used of heat protector spray. Hair without heat protector spray would suffer from the heat, and will eventually dry out and caused split ends. Any type of heat protector spray would work, though curiously TRESemme heat protector is not so bad. Huynh #2 Thirdly, you should spread the heat protector evenly through your hair. This is better done if you spray each layer of your hair. Fourthly, you always should use hairspray. For hair spraying, you shouldn't spray too much it will make your hair super stiff and it wouldn't look as nice. You spray your hair each time you finish one layer of your hair. To me, you have to spray approximately 7 inches from your hair so you wouldn't over spray the hairspray. Also you have would need a big slip to slip up your extra hair. Fifthly, your hair should be divided into sections and be clipped up so that it's easier to curl. Some people...

...First off, hairspray can be harmful to young girls. Hairspray isn't an issue for teenagers or adults, but little girls who constantly wear excessive amounts can develop growth issues. According to Travis Stork, an emergency physician and host on CBS's The Doctors, "Excessive exposure to phthalates has been linked to stunted growth and even lung cancer" ("5 reasons child pageants are bad for kids"). Also, high heels are harmful to backs and growing feet. When young girls wear high heels, most of their weight is pushed forward, causing pain in their lower back. Heels can also cause improper feet development if girls wear them on a daily basis ("5 reasons child pageants are bad for kids"). In addition, parents of beauty pageant participants have their child spray tanned or expose...

...in the 1970s and '80s, we were able to wrap our heads around that and take action. People got this simple, easy to understand, concrete image of this protective layer around the earth somewhat like a roof which in this case protected us from ultraviolet light which has the direct health consequence of potentially giving you skin cancer. People also got a clear and concrete image of how we ended up with this problem. For decades chlorofluorocarbons (also known as CFCs) were the main ingredient in many products whether that be aerosols, cleaning products or your fridge or air conditioner. Then, scientist discovered that CFCs were destroying the atmospheric ozone. People would look at their hairspray and say, "Do I want to destroy the plant because of my hairspray?" Soon the sale of hairspray and those kinds of products started to drop dramatically. People listened to scientist and took action. Scientists now predict that the hole in the ozone layer will fully heal around 2050. While stopping the use of one product is relatively easy, climate change caused by greenhouse gases is far trickier. The sources of climate change are for the most part, invisible. Right this moment, there is CO2 pouring out of tailpipes, there is CO2 pouring out of buildings, there is CO2 pouring out of smokestacks, but you cannot see it. The cause of this problem is invisible to most of us. Just think, if CO2 were black, we would have dealt with this issue a long time ago. CO2 is in every part of our...

...Think back to when you were a little kid. What was most important to you? A trip to the store to pick up the latest baby dolls, teddy bears, Barbie’s, and doll houses? Imagine your childhood dedicated to applying hairspray, lipstick and working on your strut for the runway. Child beauty pageants are becoming more popular and hinders a healthy childhood by exposing a child to pedophiles, encourages that beauty is a judge of one’s character, and could affect one future outcome on life. Beauty pageants were started many years ago but became more prominent in the society in 1921, when a hotel owner started a contest to keep tourists in town past Labor Day. The winner of this contest would be called Miss America. Miss America pageants have been a yearly event ever since then, except during the Great Depression. Then, in 1960, pageants were getting so popular that a Little Miss America was started for parents who wanted their children in beauty pageants (Nussbaum). Our past has played a remarkable role in today’s society of children beauty pageants. Pageant mothers may say that its healthy competition and it encourages socialism at a young age. As we see today these young girls spend hours and hours preparing for their competition. These preparations can include rehearsal, shopping for revealing talent costume, endless make-up and...
