...Harry can’t believe it. The Weasley’s have invited him to the Quidditch World Cup, which means he’ll get to leave the Dursley’s house early and go see a game that anyone would kill to see. The game is intense, but not just because of the stellar players and non-stop action. Voldemort’s servants, the Death Eaters, make an appearance and the wizarding world is shocked when Voldemort’s sign appears in the sky after the game. When Harry, Ron, and Hermione finally make it back to Hogwarts a few weeks later, they’re shocked to find that the school will be hosting the Triwizard Tournament this year. It’s a competition between the three wizarding schools of Hogwarts, Durmstrang, and Beauxbatons. A champion is chosen for each school and competes in very difficult challenges that test their skill and daring. When the students from the other schools arrive in October, the students begin putting their name in the Goblet of Fire in order to be chosen as their school's champion. Harry is shocked beyond belief when, in spite of his inability to compete because of his age, he’s chosen as the fourth school champion. What’s even worse is that Ron doesn’t believe that Harry didn’t put his name in the goblet. They get into a huge fight, and Ron stops talking to Harry. The rest of Hogwarts is also incensed that Harry is "looking for more fame", and the only person who stands by Harry’s side is Hermione. In the tournament, the first task of fighting dragons goes great for Harry, and what’s even...

...novel Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire loses some of its luster when transferred to film. One of the reasons the movie does not live up to the novel’s greatness is that notable characters disappear. Among the characters who make unexplained departures are two house elves: Dobby, who is introduced in an earlier novel and a previous movie, and Winky, who is supposed to make her first appearance here. Although the movie is worth watching, loss of these characters makes it less appealing than it could have been. Dobby gains the reader’s affection when he explains the difficult life of a house elf in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. His return in the fourth novel renews his appeal, but he is denied the chance to impress by not having a role in the movie. After gaining his freedom in the books, Dobby reappears in Harry’s life as an employee at Hogwarts with his friend Winky in tow. According to Dobby, Dobby has traveled the country for two whole years, sir, trying to find work! … But Dobby hasn’t found work, sir, because Dobby wants paying now! … But most wizards doesn’t want a house-elf who wants paying, miss. ‘That’s not the point of a house-elf,’ they says, and they slammed the door in Dobby’s face! Dobby likes work, but he wants to wear clothes and he wants to be paid, Harry Potter. … Dobby likes being free! … And then, Harry Potter, Dobby goes to visit Winky, and finds out Winky has been freed too, sir! … And then Dobby had the idea, Harry Potter, sir...

...Rowling was born in 1966 in Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire, England. Her father, Peter, was an aircraft factory manager, and her mother, Ann, a lab technician. Rowling grew up in Winterbourne, a hamlet close to the Welsh border, and lived four doors down from a family named the Potters, which is presumably where she drew inspiration for her main character's name. Her family moved again when she was nine, to Tutshill in the Forest of Dean. During her high school years, she was made head girl, despite the fact that she was generally a shy student. Rowling read often as a child, and began writing when she was six years old. According to interviews, she admired the works of writers such as E. Nesbit, Elizabeth Goudge, and Noel Streatfeild, among others. Although Rowling wanted to pursue a writing career, her parents convinced her to study French at Exeter University, with the hope that she would become a bilingual secretary. Rowling's rise to her position as an acclaimed author is virtually one of rags-to-riches. According to reviews, Rowling began writing the first Harry Potter book in 1990 after her revelation on the train. She was working full-time and in a long-term relationship. Shortly afterward however, her mother died, and Rowling lost her job with the Manchester Chamber of Commerce. At the age of 26, Rowling moved to Portugal to teach journalism, and there met Portuguese journalist Jorge Arantes. They married October 16, 1992. During their brief marriage, she gave birth...

The opening gross range was 108.43, from 0.01 to 108.44. The standard deviation of opening gross was 18.87. The Interquartile Range, which calculates the range for the middle 50% of the values, is used to measure the variability. The Interquartile Range for the opening gross was 12.37. The opening gross outliers were calculated on the box-plot and the extreme values were 108.44 which was Star Wars Episode 2, 102.69 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, 77.06 war of the Worlds, 50.34 Mr. and Mrs. Smith, 48.75 Batman Begins, and 33.90 Wedding Crashers, The values are less than z-score of -3 or larger than z-score of +3 which is why they are considered outliers. War of the Worlds at 77.06, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire at 102.69 and Star Wars Episode 2 are considered outliers. The chart is attached on the excel file. The total gross as seen in the histogram has a right tail so I used the mean for the calculations. The median total gross was 5.85; 50% of the total gross values were less than 5.85, which means that 50% were above the 5.85 mark. The skew of the total gross was 3.28 indicating a right...

...Ariel Craft ENG-101-015 Rusty Standridge December 4, 2013 Deathly Hallows Movies vs. Book The Harry Potter book series by J.K. Rowling became so popular, that they were in turn made into a film series. The films are nowhere like the books by some important, or less, information in the books that the directors thought was not needed till later. The series goes in the order of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). The film series uses the same titles as the book series expect that the seventh book was made into two movies. The two films are Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (Kloves, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (Kloves, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2). The differences between the books and films are what make some not want to deal with the other. The seventh book and last two movies hold true to this...

...gross was 3.43 indicating a right tail. The kurtosis of opening gross was 13.81 indicating a leptokurtic distribution. The range of opening gross was 108.43, from 0.01 to 108.44. The standard deviation of opening gross was 18.87. However, because the distribution was skewed, interquartile range (IQR), which is the range for the middle 50% of the values, would be a more appropriate measure of variability. The interquartile range for opening gross was 12.37. Opening Gross Outliers: Based on the box-plot, extreme values were 108.44 (Star Wars: Episode II), 102.69 (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), 77.06 (War of the Worlds), 50.34 (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), 48.75 (Batman Begins), and 33.90 (Wedding Crashers). It is also suggested that values that are less than z-score of -3 or larger than z-score of +3 should be considered outliers. Using that criteria 77.06 (War of the Worlds), 102.69 (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), and 108.44 (Star Wars: Episode II) can be considered outliers. Total Gross: Several central tendency measures (i.e., mean, median, and mode) are calculated for total gross in the Excel file. As can be seen in the below histogram, total gross has a right tail (i.e., skewed to the right), so median would be a more appropriate central tendency measure than the mean. The median total gross was 5.85; 50% of the total gross values were less than 5.85, 50% were above 5.85. The skewness of total...

...“Beowulf” tells of a courageous Geat warrior who comes to the aid of Hrothgar, King of the Danes, when his people are plagued by two demons from the Cain ancestry line. With his courage and strength, Beowulf defeats the two evils that cause terror and destruction among the townspeople. Several years later, Beowulf, now king of his people, must put an end to the fire-spewing dragon that has taken refuge on his land. The intense battle between Beowulf and the dragon end in the death of both opponents. Beowulf left behind a long and great legacy that leaves his people speechless and heart-broken for their fallen hero. Even though this Anglo-Saxon epic was written between the fifth and seventh century, it carries many similarities to modern day society. The similarities can be seen in modern literature and pop culture, the comitatus, the various struggles that occur, and the qualities that make up a great leader. The poem epic has left a huge print on modern day writers and pop culture. Its influence can be seen in many modern fantasies from J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic trilogy “Lord of the Rings” and J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. J. R. R. has been known to be one of the few scholars that have seriously contributed his works to Beowulf. In “Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics” he states how Anglo-Saxon literature had a long-lasting effect on present thoughts. Similarities between the Anglo-Saxon themes and ideas can be found throughout the trilogy along with the Old English derivation...

...Jayme Vallance ENG 282 Dr. Treftz Short Paper #2 The Power of Love and Harry Potter The power of love in Harry Potter is unlike any other. So much so that it is an overwhelmingly significant and recurring theme throughout the entire series. From the self-sacrificial love of Lily Potter to the loving mother Molly Weasley to the unrequited love of Severus Snape. There is also the misunderstanding, or the absence, of love; which is equally as important in the novels. Especially since it was the main difference between Voldemort and Harry that was incredibly essential to the storyline. So essential that J.K. Rowling went out of the way to tell us about it in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone when Dumbledore said, “if there is one thing Voldemort cannot understand, it is love” (229, SS). The concept of love is woven so inextricably within the very fabric of the novels, that it continues to challenge the reader all the way until the very end. One of the widely known main principles of magic is its inability to create real, true love. Which is why fictional characters have been known to dabble with one of the darker aspects of love in novels: love potions. They do exactly what is expected, which is to make the victim become obsessed and completely infatuated with the intended target for a certain amount of time. All while being completely unaware of such actions. The idea of being able to control someone that you can’t have with love is an alluring concept for many. It’s...
