...SCM-honors Lei Zhang (Alice) Case # 10: Heartland & Company 1. I think there are at least two advantages of basing a supplier’s overall evaluation on its lowest performance. First of all, it is a simple way to exclude poorly performed suppliers. Since Heartland & Company could have a list of thousands of potential suppliers that need to be evaluated, this method could save a lot of time for managers to pick up a handful of qualified suppliers. Moreover, according to “Liebig’s law of the minimum”, the growth is usually controlled by the scarcest resource, just like the water available in a barrel is determined by the shortest stave. That is, the overall quality of one product can be hit by the worst part of it, and the company is able to avoid this situation by implementing this assessment method. However, to a large extent, evaluating a supplier’s overall quality on its lowest performance is not comprehensive, and may cause the loss of some great suppliers. For example, based on the poorest performance, Midwest Bearings gets lower overall rate than New England Works because of the relatively lower rate of delivery and technical support. However, Midwest Bearings does really good job at cost management, which is one of the critical elements that Heartland & Company looks for. In that case, the buyer should not eliminate the name of the supplier out of the list immediately. In my point of view, evaluating one company based on one dimension is not a rational idea...

...Professor: John Theodore November 22, 2011 Heartland Payment Systems is known for fair, fully disclosed pricing and empowering merchants who like to take control of payments processing costs. More than 11 million transactions are processed daily with over $80 billion transactions a year, making Heartland the 5th largest payment processor in the United States and 9th in the world (Heartland, 2011). However, a data breach occurred last year in 2010 for Heartland which compromised tens of millions of credit and debit card transactions. Such figures make the Heartland incident one of the largest data breaches ever reported. In this paper I will analyze Heartland’s business, marketing, and security strategies and their response to this security breach as well as propose new methods of security to prevent future occurrences. Heartland is available to merchants 24/7 with a full customer support team. Additionally, their E3 end-to-end encryption solution is designed to protect cardholder data throughout the lifecycle of a payments transaction which helps business owners improve data security and reduce the cost of PCI compliance. Heartland uses end-to-end encryption because other technologies such as point-to-point encryption do not protect the data after the card is authenticated which leaves payment account data vulnerable to thieves who can use the data for fraudulent activity that does not require a card to be present. Heartland states on their website that only encryption technologies...

...Conceptualizing a Business Chris Wright BUS/475 February 23, 2014 Diane Deaton Heartland Residential Design is a custom home design company, designing homes for both builders and individuals in the Kansas City, metro area. There is a great need for such services in the metro area due to the home building industry crashing in 2009. Many home design companies that were in the area along with other industry professionals including builders and construction suppliers did not survive the crash. Now that the industry is bouncing back and new housing starts are at their highest since 2009, the opportunity for a business that designs custom home plans seems to be at its greatest, with opportunity growing as the housing industry begins its re-growth. Mission Statement: Heartland Design will define the way homes are designed for the future providing plans to customers which are green friendly energy efficient homes, drawn to utilize construction materials while reducing waste during construction, designed to meet all current codes, and most importantly, drawn to the likes and specifications of the customer at a reasonable cost and in a timely manner. A very important factor in the development of Heartland Residential Design and where it stands out among competitors is in the pricing of the provided services to customers and turn- around time for completed ready to build custom home plans. Most customers believe they must seek out an architect to have a home designed...

...calculation sheet inclosed to my Email. 2. Heartland’s ratios evaluation The current and quick ratios measure the ability of the firm to easy liquidize - in both measures Heartland is significantly lower than the industry average, and so this may be a problem. The inventory, asset, and A/R turnover measures collectively reflect how well the firm is utilizing its assets. Heartland is managing it inventory and receivables better than the industry average, and asset turnover (the collective measure) is the same as the industry average. Financial leverage is measured with the Debt/equity ratio and times interest earned measure. Heartland relies more heavily on debt (rather than equity) and as a result is suffering a low times interest earned measure. These two are clearly correlated because you will owe more interest if you carry a larger debt load. Profitability is measured through ROS, ROA, and ROE. In general, we can say that Heartland is not as profitable as an average company that has a similar asset and liability structure. 3. Bank decision making I do not believe that the bank will approve the loan if it actually does use the survey data as a benchmark against Heartland's financial statements. Even if the loan is approved, it will include a higher interest rate, since the bank could loaning to Heartland as a risky venture. The main objective of any loan officer is to ensure that the loan made can be repaid, plain and simple. However, this requires an understanding ...

...A. Executive Summary: The Zhong-Lian Knitting Company Chinese Joint Venture (JV) is facing trouble among its two owners that have different objectives. American based Heartland Spindle is looking for higher profits and a move to higher quality clothing markets in the USA while Suzhou First Textile Company, the Chinese partner, is looking to enter the domestic Chinese market and expand its manufacturing capacity through job growth, in line with local government pressures. My recommendation is to first focus on what is best for the JV given its situation and opportunities – which is to grow through acquisition and focus on expanding its current clothing products into the Chinese Domestic market. From that analysis with the implied 4% ROI, Heartland should to exit the JV and invest in entities that better meet its needs and expectations in countries that are more attractive to its needs. Finally in the future Heartland should be more careful when entering into JV agreements so that all parties have an appreciation for cultural differences, a common understanding of objectives and directions that are embedded in the JV agreement. Note – the Executive Summary is one area that is repetitive of other sections given its nature. B. Industry Dynamics: The Zhong-Lian Joint Venture (JV) is currently manufacturing clothing for the US mass market, a strategic group within the overall apparel industry (versus high end fashion brands). Their clothing is sold through retailers such as Walmart...

...Declining Housing Value of The Missions of Heartland Crossing 1 From around 1997 to 2003, the housing market in the Heartland Crossing area, specifically the “Mission” area, was experiencing a housing boom. Homeowners were buying the properties with the expectation of a safe community with parks, sport courts and fields, community pools, safe streets with biking lanes, and well maintained lawns and landscapes. The properties that are for sale need to be maintained by the sellers, even if they are bank owned, and new housing builds need to be put on hold until the ratio of homes for sale to total homes in the neighborhood improves. Following these steps will improve the community and raise the value of the homes to where they need to be so the homeowners do not have to face a decline of their community and property values. The problem is the Mission now contains home foreclosures and the current market value of homes are tens of thousands of dollars less than what the homeowners owe on their mortgages; the solution to this problem is the current homeowners need to pay their mortgages, work on home improvements, and maintain the neighborhood by keeping up with the facade of their property and follow the Home Owners Association covenants(McLaughlin, 2009). Since 2008 when the housing market experienced a decline, the Mission of Heartland Crossing was a community not unlike many across the United States that took a big hit and was negatively affected...

...The literature of changing people’s opinions also known as the media is consistently portraying the wrong message, with a lack of detail to support the ideas. The author is in full control of manipulating the readers/viewers thoughts. Each author uses different writing style, which then leads to opinions rather than conveying the truthful story . There news provides biased stories to the author’s opinions, but in reality, it should focus more on real world problems, rather than opinions . The media always contains more than one side of the story. The informal style of writing describes the colloquialism and similarity of opinion from two different authors that focus on the same topic to reflect the solemnity and pessimism of this revolutionized era. The supporting texts are attestable, focused, and structured on the problem. Bob Weber’s “Air pollution northeast of Edmonton as bad as world’s largest cities: study ” and Andrew Nikiforuk’s “Alberta’s Oil Legacy: Bad Air and Rare Cancers” are examples of this devious colloquial style portrayed by the media. While Bob Weber and Andrew Nikiforuk share a humane attitude with respect to the study of Alberta’s air pollutants, Nikiforuk is more critical of the detail of exemplifying the seriousness of the problem. Through his description of subsidiary secondary characters , his affective writing style and his manipulative headlines/images , it is clear that Nikiforuk fully comprehends the importance of reducing the air pollutants...

...Based on my map and the researched information, I noticed that the Northern Region had much higher prices than the rest of Canada. When in comparison with the other regions, the prices in the Northern Region were more than twice as those in the other regions. I also noticed that the average prices in the Urban Heartland were the lowest at about $2.99. The order of the least average price to the most is as follows: Urban Heartland ($2.99), Atlantic ($3.56),Central ($3.73), Pacific ($4.10), Prairie ($4.10), and Northern ($8.09). I believe the reason that Northern Canada's prices are so high is because of all the additional expenses. For example, transportation, store maintenance, and the minimum wage of workers contribute to the overall cost of the food. When...

...Russia-Ukraine Crisis. It has re-established and heightened the tensions between Russia and West. Realism has been on the fore front of the academic discussion in explaining the crisis as the power competition between Russia and the West. Alternatively, Materialism has provided a different yet deeper analytical perspective on the conflict by attributing it to the broadening of the transnational class capitalism. This paper will seek to explain and scrutinize the analytical differences in conceptualizing this crisis in Realist and Materialist terms. Maria has to show that her rights were violated under the religious accommodation rules. But here is a hypothetical situation, supposedly this particular branch of Hillsdale Savings Bank have 15 or less employees, then there's no obligation for this employer to comply with Title VII and is not required to provide accommodations for employee's religious practices. (I have a question professor, my confusion is about bank as a whole institution. Maria wrote to the headquarters and in response she was terminated from her position as a teller, so now do you look at the entire company for the number of...

...Employment Law by Liberal Arts and Sciencs Professor Nicholas Alimaras BSBA DeVry University 11/27/2011 1. In late July 1990, Wilson, a Roman Catholic, made a religious vow that she would wear an antiabortion button “until there was an end to abortion or until she could no longer fight the fight.” The button was two inches in diameter and showed a color photograph of an 18- to 20-week-old fetus. The button also contained the phrases “Stop Abortion” and “They’re Forgetting Someone.” Wilson began wearing the button to work in August 1990. Another information specialist asked Wilson not to wear the button to a class she was teaching. Wilson explained her religious vow and refused to stop wearing the button. The button caused disruptions at work. Employees gathered to talk about the button. U.S. West identified Wilson’s wearing of the button as a “time robbing” problem. She cited religious discrimination, claiming that she was not reasonably accommodated. What result? Wilson v. U.S. West Communications, 58 F.3d 1337 (8th Cir. 1995). I think she had all right to wear the button but when it actually comes to her trying to force her beliefs on someone else, that’s where it begins to be not okay. This actually reminds me of the English only policy, it’s not against the law to put a stop to different language speaking unless in makes the other employees uncomfortable in legitimate ways. I think the same would apply here, she was making other employees uncomfortable...

...Trident University International XXXXXXXXXX Management 516 Module1 Case Study: Gelato EEO and HRM 2013 Professor: INTRODUCTION Companies operating in the United States need to be in compliant with Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) regulations. There are many laws that are governed by EEOC regulations but in this paper, I will review Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA). I will apply these two laws to the Gelato company hiring practice operating out of Heartland Corners, U.S.A. With the data I have, I will evaluate if Gelato is in compliant with the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for hiring black and other minority groups in the local area. I will also explore their practices of hiring younger employees to determine if they are violation of the ADEA. Lastly, I will make recommendations for compliance with the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and ADEA if any or needed. THE ISSUE WITH GELATO Gelato is a larger cheese maker that distributes throughout the United States. Gelato is located in Heartland Corners, U.S.A. and employs approximately 200 hundred workers. Currently their employees’ racial make-up is 85 percent white and 15 percent other races. The population of Heartland Corners is 50 percent white and 25 percent African American with the other 25 percent mixed with Hispanic, Asians and other races. The question here is whether or not Gelato is...
