Discs can rupture suddenly because of too much pressure at one time. For instance, falling from a ladder and landing in a sitting position can cause a great amount of force through the spine. If the force is strong enough, either a vertebra can break or a disc can rupture. Bending places high forces on the discs between each vertebra. If you bend and try to lift something that is too heavy, the force can cause a disc to rupture.One can have a herniated disk without knowing it. Herniated disks sometimes show up on spinal images of people who have no symptoms of a disk problem. But some herniated disks can be painful. Most herniated disks occur in the lower back (lumbar spine) and the neck (cervical spine). The most common signs and symptoms of a herniated disk are; Arm or leg pain. If one's herniated disk is in the lower back, you'll typically feel the most intense pain in your buttocks, thigh and calf. It may also involve part of the foot. If your …show more content…
He needs to know that good health comes first before work. Therefore, he should be educated that putting more pressure on his back may predispose him to more severe condition. He needs to take off from work in order to rest, since he has a severe pain. Otherwise, stay active. Staying in bed for more than 1 or 2 days can weaken your muscles and make the problem worse. Walking and other light activity may help. Exercises that will help keep his back muscles strong and prevent another injury. He needs to try using a heating pad on a low or medium setting for 15 to 20 minutes every 2 or 3 hours. Try a warm shower in place of one session with the heating pad. He can also buy single-use heat wraps that last up to 8 hours. He can also try an ice pack for 10 to 15 minutes every 2 to 3 hours. He needs to see a doctor.
