...homophobia is defined as the involuntary belief by lesbians and gay men that the homophobic lies, stereotypes and myths about them are true. There are two logical, predictable consequences of a lifetime of such messages.1 First, heterosexuals will grow to believe many of the messages, and treat these with this issue and kind of people accordingly. They will be thoroughly indoctrinated into their role in heterosexism, protecting their heterosexual privilege by colluding with the perpetuation of heterosexism / homophobia. But there is a second logical consequence - these same messages also stick to lesbians and gay men, resulting in internalized homophobia. Lesbians and gay men are taught to act out the lies and stereotypes, doubting themselves and other gay people (sometimes called “horizontal hostility.”) This is the way lesbians and gay men collude with the perpetuation of heterosexism. For the heterosexist system to be maintained and passed on to the next generation, we all must believe the messages (lies and stereotypes) to some degree, and collude with heterosexism by performing our assigned roles. Most progressive, non-profit organizations, whether in human services, public service or social...

...I chose to implement the program that adresses homophobia in high school. I chose high school because I personally believe that homophobia and heterosexism is most evident amongst high school students. Students in high school feel the need to prove themselves , especially males , and insulting someone using derogatory homosexual terms is quite common in high schools. The biggest insult I today’s society is an attack on someone’s sexuality, it also makes a person (in particular males) feel more empowered when they insult someone based on their sexuality. This problem afflicting the youth of today is getting significantly worse and there should be measures put in place to hault the discrimination against homosexual students. The program I would like to see put in place in high schools is inspired by the “Just Communities’ Safe Schools Program”. It is a two day program which is basically like workshop to inform and teach students , teachers , counsellors and administrators about homosexuality and heterosexist in high schools and how they can make in difference in changing the way we handle situations associated with it. The participants are made knowledgeable of the discrimination against homosexuals that is constantly occurring everyday in schools. Discrimination can be anything from ridiculing someone because of their sexual orientation to homophobic incidents perpetrated by the school systems itself. The first step of the program should be an information session in which the...

...Love is a beautiful thing. It makes people happy. It can change a person, and show someone things that they never knew about themselves. It lifts one up, knowing there is always someone who will stand by their side through anything. It brings people together, and makes the world a better place. Some people may disagree; they might think love is just a fantasy. Either way, it is a fantasy that everyone deserves to dream of and experience in all its glory, whether straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. However, not all people are so accepting of love when it is not in the form that they are familiar with, or is not demonstrated in ways that they think are proper. This can be easily seen in society’s treatment of non-heterosexuals, especially in the cases of marriage laws, bullying by teens and young adults, and general homophobic attitudes in our culture. It is important that these situations be changed so that each and every person has the same rights and is not harshly and wrongly judged because of the sex of the person that they love. When thinking of the word “marriage,” what comes to mind? Is it long white dresses and dapper tuxedos, or a towering cake and beautiful flowers? Do sappy love songs and the first dance come to mind? Some imagine a fairytale come true, with a horse and carriage whisking the happy couple away from the church in which they nervously exchanged vows? No matter what comes to mind, most people can agree that marriage is happy, and wonderful...

...Gay Marriage Word Count:752 It’s not a secret that the relations between men and women become different when they start living together. The period of dating is something like a preparatory stage for the creation of the family. Once that happen things become more different between men and women, but is it a difference when gay people get marry? Gay Marriage has always been a very sensitive topic throughout the past decades. People have always had good or bad views about gay marriage. In this essay I will analyze and go in depth about gay marriage. I will be analyzing articles from Andrew Sullivan and William J. Bennett about people who are for gay marriage or who is against it. Gay marriage has gradually become a very significant factor amongst individuals of today’s society. Similarly, this leads to the discussion of gays having the right to marry in society. Ultimately, conflict from the opposing position of ‘against’ gay marriage may arise that gay marriage can complete destroy the concept of marriage and mock the importance of procreation. In reference to this statement; everyone in society has the right to marry regardless of gender, thus it should be socially acceptable. However, this is why it is so significant to discuss both sides of the argument, regardless if a person is ‘for’ or ‘against’ gay marriage in society. In relation to gays, contradiction constantly arises that gay marriage should not be legalized. However, gays don’t necessarily want to get married...

...Gay Marriage Sio Tevaga University of Phoenix BCOM/275 [ July 11, 2011 ] Debo Onatolu A topic that has many on the edge of their seats is the topic of marriage and primarily where is it heading towards in this generation? Throughout the world and mainly in our country, the subject of same-sex marriage has taken a front seat row because of how our society is shifting towards legalizing the same-sex marriage throughout the United States. There are many valid arguments from both sides of gay marriage and why one side supports it and why the other opposes it. In this essay, I will be discussing articles with reliable and valid data sported by sources that have been reviewed by many respected writers and journalist based on this subject of gay marriage. For over a decade, the issue of same-sex marriage has hit the fore front of America’s politics, setting off waves of competing legislation, lawsuits and ballot initiatives to either legalize or ban the practice and causing rifts within religious groups. For the past couple years, the gay rights movement has made it a goal to persuade lawmakers to consider their point of view and why legalizing same-sex marriage will provide a better place in America’s society. According to John Leo, a U.S. News & World Reporter, “if gays are the social equal of straights, why can’t they marry too?”(Leo, 1993). This question signifies why lawmakers and governments are reconsidering this matter of same-sex marriage and reconsider this...

Credit Rick Bowmer/Associated Press Derek Kitchen, left, and his partner, Moudi Sbeity, were one of three couples who sued the state. Credit Rick Bowmer/Associated Press Gay marriage/rights have been an ongoing issue for many years. For me personally it is not an issue at all. Ever since I was a child I’ve had an Aunt that has been a lesbian, even though I never knew until I was in my late teens and early twenties. It didn’t make me feel any different about her. And now, I have many friends that are from all aspects of the LGBT society. (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual) I am a straight male, I have a girlfriend, and we have a child on the way. I am very happy to be straight, and I am also very happy to see my friends that are gay be happy together as well. This debate is one that will likely go on for a long time. Mostly the argument comes down to an opinion debate as well. It has been continually quashed in many political areas and in religious communities. A quote from a Denver reporter in the New York Times from a judge that upheld the rights of Gay unions, “To claim that marriage, by definition, excludes certain couples is simply to insist that those couples may not marry because they have historically been denied the right to do so,” the judges wrote. “One might just as easily have argued that interracial couples are by...

...jmc The gay rights movement continue to be a hot-button topic as we push our way into 2013. I find it difficult to believe that the United States is lagging behind in its equality laws. Slowly but surely, acceptance for people of all sexual orientations is becoming a reality across our country; unfortunately however, there is still strong opposition to the inevitable force of equal rights. I believe that gay equality, especially in our nation, should be not a question. The founding principles of American life and the pursuit of the American dream should not be contained to those who choose a certain lifestyle over the other. From gay marriage to refusal of service in businesses across 32 states (North Carolina being one of them), people of the LGBT community are being opposed in nearly every frontier of their everyday commute. Last year, Amendment One passed with a 61% vote for the amendment, putting the nail in the coffin for gay marriage hopefuls in NC. But for what reason was such legislation backed by the majority of NC's voting community? The two opposing sides resemble similar disputes as the ones seen during the passing of interracial couples. Those who oppose gay equality typically root their reasons in religion; however, their arguments can not be considered valid on legislative grounds in the United States because our nation does not identify with a specific religion. For example, if a group of Christians calls one person's marriage invalid because it does not...

...I remember throughout my middle and high school education... Sitting in my history classes, and listening and learning about the horrors of the past. History has taught me that human behavior has not changed much throughout history. There has been endless strife and wars fought over simply 'differences'. Differences in the way one chooses to live, and the religion they choose to follow. Sometimes simply for being born a certain way, and even for being born on 'desired land' and the fight over who deserves to occupy it. Someone, or a group of people, will always deem themselves to be superior in all matters of sex, faith, religion, and culture. Think of the Crusades. The hostile religious wars and the lives lost; all to reclaim the 'Holy Land', and give it back to the 'superior' Christian religion. The Civil War and the enslavement of blacks, where African Americans were treated as no more than workhorses and animals. Hitler and the slaughter of millions of Jews and non-Arians; due to the convictions of an insane man and his persuasive belief that all Jews were an inferior race. "By defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord"(Hitler). Fast forward to the time where woman were seen as no more than childrearing humans only capable enough to cook, clean, and bear children. All for the man, in a time where males were the 'superior sex'. The list goes on and on. Have we not come far enough in humanity to come to the modern conclusion that "ALL MEN...

...DISCRIMINATION SPEECH Discrimination, it is as old as human kind. Some people would say that discrimination is a type of abuse, falling into both the physiological and physical molds. The Homosapians committed this abuse against the Neanderthals, and I think we can all agree that it is one of the sources of most societal ills. Prejudice, bullying, racism are all types of discrimination. Machismo, Homophobia & stereotypes are also products of this abuse. Maybe there is a physiological explanation to all of this, maybe you were raised to discriminate against Jews or Asians, or maybe you had a bad experience with a black man and so you associate black people with that experience. Let's start of with Machismo. It has been around even before the bible, for it features strongly there. It says that women are "unclean" because they get their periods, and that if a mother bears a male child, it's better than if it had been born a girl. This holy book says that women are to blame for the fact that Adam & Eve were kicked out of paradise. Before, if a man could find a stick thinner than his thumb he could LEGALY BEAT HS WIFE & CHILDREN WITH IT! And even now, in places like India and Saudi Arabia, a woman can be RAPED and if she takes the man who raped her to court & doesn’t have 4 male witnesses SHE, THE VICTIM WILL AUTOMATICLY LOSE & be STONED TO DEATH!! And plus, in the Quran, the Islamic version of the Bible, it says that if a woman is raped by a man, she must legally take him...

...Have you experienced being near two gays who were talking in quite a different language altogether? And were you not surprised that you could understand some of the words they were saying? Yes. It is gayspeak, that wonderful lingo, argot, or jargon, which Filipino gays in general seamlessly switch into when they are gathered together or most immediately when they are around other people in order perhaps to “cloak” their intimate conversations, the better to protect the “virgin” ears of those around them. Historically though, it is known as swardspeak, a word coinage in the 1970s attributed by Jose Javier Reyes to columnist and movie critic Nestor Torre. Reyes himself devoted a book on the subject titled Swardspeak: A Preliminary Study. No other term has replaced swardspeak in local usage since the 70s but Ronald Baytan (in his essay “Language, Sex, and Insults: Notes on Garcia and Remoto’s The Gay Dict”) opines that the term sward these days has become anachronistic, making it improper to call the language of the gay people as “swardspeak” preferring instead to term it gayspeak. Consciously or unconsciously, even straights or heterosexuals have peppered their vocabulary with words traceable to gayspeak. Mention the word anech (from “ano” or “what” in English with anesh, anik, anikla as varieties) to anyone in the metropolitan area and in all likelihood, the person being spoken to will reply as casually. There are also the familiar words chika, chuva, and lafang. Thanks or no...

...Many people think that freedom of speech is a right all humans should have because it allows people to express themselves. That is true, but nobody has ever thought that freedom of speech can actually harm people too. Apart from all the good things freedom of speech brings, people often miss the numerous bad things that freedom of speech brings. Some of these things included using freedom of speech to discriminate, expressing slanderous facts to the public and it can also promote unwanted riots that will cause havoc to a city. I think that freedom of speech should be limited to protect people from harm. Firstly, freedom of speech can be used as a way to discriminate people without consequences. If freedom of speech isn’t limited and anyone can say or express whatever they want, lots of people can pass out booklets discriminating gay people or a certain religion, because they dislike them. Everybody can tell that those people are abusing the freedom of speech, plus they wont receive consequences for doing so if freedom of speech isn’t limited at all. Which is why freedom of speech should be limited in order to protect those people from discrimination. Secondly, freedom of speech allows people to express slanderous opinions or facts just so they can gain trust from the city residents and gain power. Once too many people believe that person, it will be too late to stop and tell the truth because there will be too many people that that believes the lie and wouldn't believe the...

...When you think of America, the first thing that should come to your mind is a nation of peace and equality. But in reality it's not, is it? We live in a nation of racism, sexism, and homophobia. Homosexuals get the worst of all the unfair treatment. Gays have been fighting for rights since the 1960's, maybe even before then, and yet today in 2012, those pleas for rights are heard, but ignored & lashed at. We should allow same-sex marriage because banning it is unfair, love is all that matters in marriage, & gay families have certain family values that some straight marriages lack. Banning an issue doesn't make it go away. The fact of the matter is, it'll always be there: gay people will always exist & so will their need for equal rights. As stated in '14th amendment' in the Constitution, “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges...nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. ” In short, everyone deserves the same, equal rights: that includes gay people. In that case, banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. Making this issue illegal is also a form of discrimination. Homophobes ridicule & abuse gay citizens, gays are just being themselves! We are all created equal, so why can't we all just try to get along? What's the reason people get married for? Love is. Who's to judge someone based & whom they love? No one has the rights to do so. Gays have feelings too, & them getting married isn't hurting anyone...
