How do you improve your language skills to the point that you can give a snappy response when foreigners compliment you on the way you speak ‘their’ language?
IN the past, during my years spent living and studying overseas in Australia and in the United Kingdom, I was often presented with this matter of fact statement. At that time, I didn’t really know how to respond, especially when surrounded by native speakers.
It was often difficult to explain something that was indeed very natural to me.
But nowadays, when the same statement is put to me, I respond confidently with a “And so do you!”, often accompanied by a quizzical look, as if to not find their observations funny at all.
I find pride in being able to converse and express myself fluently in this language of the world. The English language can only be explained as being all pervasive; its tentacles of speech, writing, and readings are present throughout the world. This undeniably impacts all, especially those who, like myself, find a passion for all things English. So then, speaking English becomes a natural thing which transcends borders and cultures.
So, you may ask, how does one speak good English? The answer is simple: READ.
I am not of the MTV generation where, if one was schooled on a diet of vivid images peppered with US-centric stories and drawls, you would often have an Americanised accent. But I’d like to think that since English belongs to us all, that accents of different countries are becoming less discernible. What has emerged now instead is a globalised version of the language, that makes it difficult for the listener to know the origins of any speaker.
But then again, does it matter? What matters is that an ease of speaking can stem from reading. I’d like to believe that you eventually develop your own accent and voice from drowning yourself with reading, in all manner and forms.
I grew

...Student Sample English 111-72 A K. Schlene June 10, 2013 How the Internet Helped My Writing The internet is a breeding ground for information and education. However, it’s also a breeding ground for people who “typ leik di!!!1” I used to be one of those people. However, over time I slowly learned the difference between “Their” and “They’re” and that it was easy to just add an apostrophe to “I dont know” instead of typing “I dunno“ or “idk.“ This sort of metamorphosis transitioned from “text speak” a form of typing where “Are you with Mom?” could be turned into “r u w/ mom” with no sort of punctuation or capitalization, all the way to generally accepted grammar and spelling. For quite some time, I wandered around the internet interjecting my 12 year old opinions in text speak. Which often resulted in them telling me to basically shut up. I didn’t catch on, so I kept doing it for quite some time. Eventually, my “text speak” evolved into “1337 (Pronounced like the “lite” in “Elite“) speak.” In which some letters are replaced with numbers in a word, and intentional typos were born. “owned” became “pwned.” But for the most part, it can be made into a sort of legible sentence. However, like with text speak, it lacks capitalization unless they left caps lock on. In mild cases, the sentence “That guy just got his butt kicked” would become “That guy just got pwned. N00b.” And in extreme cases, the sentence “Pineapples are good for you” would become “p|/\/34pp135 R GUD...

Listen, to Hear and Be Heard

...Listen, to hear and be heard by June Hamid Listening is a natural way to learn a language, and more so for the English Language, where you hear the variety of speakers in their element. Just listen, and you could learn and enjoy all that the English Language can offer and more. The idea is simple enough, and altogether very easy to do. As one of the main functional skills in mastering the English Language, listening is very important. However it is often under used, and even under rated. The other skills, are reading, writing and speaking. Reading of course, goes hand in hand in building a foundation, and was given quite a prominence in my previous article ‘Hey you speak good English’. Listening, as I have often referenced with my audiences, is integral in honing both English proficiency and communication skills, and is crucial to understanding your audience (of one or hundred), who is the ultimate receiver and decipherer of your either very straightforward or convoluted message. In fact, I am very glad that it recently became infamous and was even emphasized up to eleven (11) times in a not too recent storm in a teacup/ debacle involving two very opinionated speakers. Of which, much has already been said about ‘that’ incident, but I tend to think that something very good came out of all this. For one, and for quite a reasonable time, the word ‘listen’ firmly entrenched itself in the mainstream psyche through advertisements using the word to flog everything from restaurant...

A Story of a Non-Native Speaker's Steps of Learning English's Literacy

...Dear Mom: I miss you. It’s the first time that I have been away from you for such a long time, and I do not know how to describe my feelings. I know you want me to become independent and not rely on you and dad as much as I used to. However, I never thought being in a different country and speaking in a different language would be so difficult for me. Ever since I was young, you have taught me how to communicate with others and also told me to not be afraid to talk to people that I do not know. Though I know what you are trying to teach me, and knowing your expectations for me, I still have not made any friends here. Not only do some people think we have different color of skin and just ignore me; in addition, whenever I try to communicate with others they cannot understand what I am trying to say. Mom, can I please go back home? Dear Son: I know how tough it is to be in a different country that you do not know anyone and do not speak the same language as they do, except life will not always go the way that we want it to. Sometimes there are challenges that we have to face, and after we have passed through the obstacle that is in front of us, we will learn a lot. Right now you are about to learn, and it is just the beginning of it. When I first went to the United States I also did not speak English very well, yet it did not bring me down. On the other hand, it gave me motivation to get better. After four years of college and two years of work experience in America, now...

Indian Dialect

...Indian dialect INTRODUCTION English has been with India since the early 1600's, when the East India Company started trading and English missionaries first began their efforts. A large number of Christian schools imparting an English education were set up by the early 1800's. The process of producing English-knowing bilinguals in India began with the Minute of 1835, which officially endorsed T.B. Macaulay's goal of forming "a class who may be interpreters between us and the millions whom we govern - a class of persons, Indians in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinion, in morals and in intellect" (quoted in Kachru 1983, p. 22). English became the official and academic language of India by the early twentieth century. The rising of the nationalist movement in the 1920's brought some anti-English sentiment with it - even though the movement itself used English as its medium. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF INDIAN ENGLISH Indian English is a distinct variety of the English language. Many Indians claim that it is very similar to British English, but this opinion is based on a surface level examination of lexical similarities. Of course, one must keep in mind that not every linguistic item is used by every Indian English speaker and that a great deal of regional and educational differentiation exists. Even so, items can be identified which are indicative of Indian English speech and which are widely used. These operate on various phonological, morphological,...

Business practices and ideas that work well here in the United States may not necessarily be expected to do so in other cultural environments. If you were considering an expansion of your current business into an Asian country, what cross cultural challenges might you encounter? Task: Write an essay (suggested length 3–5 pages) in which you do the following: A. Discuss three major cross-cultural differences that would need to be taken into consideration if your company were to expand into this market based on your selected country. I have chosen to take my business into the Asian country of the Philippines. There will be many cross-cultural differences that will need to be considered prior to the expansion from the United States. Three of these major cross-cultural differences I would like to emphasize on are first, the language barrier; second, I will be covering legal barriers; and third, I will discuss the labor barriers. Language Barrier I chose this as a major barrier in a cross-culteral transition of my business, because, although the Philippines’ national language is Tagalog, and English is understood and spoken throughout, this does not...

Your Use of Language Sends Out Lots of Little Messages, Not Only Just About Your Level of Education and Where You Come from, but How You Would Like to Be Perceived.

...-----------Essay l0lz get it? (mehican gangster) Your use of language sends out lots of little messages, not only just about your level of education and where you come from, but how you would like to be perceived. The use of language one uses sends out messages of how the speaker wants to be perceived by others or to the speaker him/herself. People can rapidly change their language depending on situation and context, in the public eye one will choose their language to create an identity or sell a point of view toward how they would like to be perceived. Language can be a determiner of your level of education or a locational marker but these ‘common traits’ are usually quite generalized and will change depending whether an individual is trying to achieve an overt or covert prestige within a group or greater public. Many Australians who have come from overseas speak in an ethnolect; the variety of English these people speak that promotes maintaining or increasing social distance and stresses common bonds, experiences and knowledge between the speakers. It is a way for these migrants to keep their accent and embrace their culture because this is how they would like to be perceived by their cultural groups and how the migrant themself wants to be perceived. A good example of this is the ethnolect variety “wogspeak” (term coined by Jane Warren) which is spoken mainly by ethnic groups of Lebanese and European. Jane Warren states that “Language plays an essential role in the...

Title: How I Met Your Mother, season 2 episode 7 – The Crazy Eyes (Swarley) DESCRIBE THE 20 MINUTE ACTION: Ted, Marshall and Barney are sitting in a coffee shop where they figured out is not as fun as sitting in a bar. While drinking their coffee, Ted notices a heart on Marshall’s cup. He and Barney assume that coffee shop girl has a crush on Marshall. They are encouraging him to invite her on a drink. Marshall brags about how she likes his pumpkin jokes. That in Ted’s opinion can mean only two things – either girl has never heard a joke before, or has a crush on Marshall. Marshall is, however, not convinced. Ted and Barney try to prove him that heart next to his name is meaning something. When doing that, Barney discovers that his name is not written correctly. Instead of Barney is Swarley. He realizes this name will stick to him. Second scene takes place at Robin’s apartment. Robin is girlfriend of Ted. She is on the phone with her mother, but she is willing to talk to Ted even though her mother is still speaking. Ted tells her about Marshall and his date and that he helped him get the girl. Robin discovers that look, that made her sleep with Ted was fake. She can’t believe she fell for it until Ted reminds her that she has a familiar look for seducing. Lily, Marshall’s ex-girlfriend appears with plans for next evening. She is considering inviting Marshall too, but Ted tells her that he is busy. Lily...

Critical Thinking

...certain amount of risk. When given a task to accomplish, good leaders use their own skills while recognizing and utilizing other people’s skills helping one another to achieve the best outcome for their goal. Being able to recognize their own individual strengths and weaknesses, seeking out council from senior leaders or peers and “thinking outside the box” are valuable assets to have when applying critical thinking. Applying Individual Critical Thinking Implementing critical thinking skills plays a vital role into not just how decisions are made, but also how some people may perceive that individual’s role within an organization. A good leader is perceived as someone who not only has good skills in performing duties such as making on the spot decisions, but they are also viewed as having self-confidence in everything they do. For example, I have been under supervision of many leaders, some of whom I remember because of their leadership styles more than them as individuals. While I remember a lot of negative styles, I have taken the downsides of how we were treated as an experience of how I wouldn’t be toward my own soldiers. I have had a few leaders who would act like the big boss around us but shrink when someone of higher-rank question what we were tasked to do. Instead of standing behind whatever decision that leader had made, they would let that higher individual take over the show rather than saying, “hey these are my guys, I’ve got the situation under control.”...
