...Tamara Goins- Weekly Research- Week 5- Antonelli College- Ericca Peacock- Instructor For this weekly research, I have chosen Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. From my research, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma is also called NHL, and no, not for the National Hockey League! But for the acronym of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a cancer that starts in your lymphatic system where it in turn, develops into tumors from our white blood cells, called lymphocytes. Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a more common type than that of the Hodgkin Lymphoma. Some of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma’s symptoms may include painless, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, your armpits, and your groin area. There could also be abdominal pain and or swelling. You could have chest pain...

...B-cell Leukemia/Lymphoma 2 is a special type of proto-oncogene found on chromosome 18. Its product is an integral membrane protein (called BCL-2) located in the membrane of the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER), the nuclear envelope, and in the outer membranes of the Mitochondria. The gene was discovered as a trans located locus in B-cell Leukemia, and found also in most B-cell Lymphomas. In the cancerous B-cells, the amount of chromosome 18 holding the BCL-2 locus has undergone a reciprocal translocation with the portion of chromosome 14, holding the antibody heavy chain locus. This (14; 18) translocation places the BCL-2 gene close to the heavy chain gene enhancer. This enhancer is active in the B cells- whose job is to synthesize large amounts of the antibody-. So it is not very surprising to discover that the BCL-2 protein is expressed at high levels in these T (14; 18) cells. B-cells, like all activated lymphocytes, die after they have done their jobs. This makes sure they do not linger after the threat has...

Principle of the technique Bone marrow transplantation and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation are procedures that help to restore those stem cells that have been destroyed while going through radiation and/or chemotherapy. There are different types of transplantation: autologous, syngeneic, and allogeneic. Autologous transplantation is defined as the transplantation of owns stem cells. Syngeneic transplantation is when patients received stem cells from an identical twin. Lastly, allogeneic transplantation is when patients received stem cells from a sibling, or a parent, or other individuals not related to the patient as long compatibility is present. Autologous bone marrow transplantation is a technique that was developed for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) as an alternative to allogeneic stem cell transplantation. However, this technique was not very successful. Autologous bone marrow transplantation has been associated with prolonged marrow aplasia resulting in toxicity and mortality. After the failure of this technique, researchers...

...Stem Cell Research Paper Stem Cell Research Paper Human Biology The human body is capable of many miraculous feats. Every hour, every minute, every second, millions of cells are working to maintain homeostasis within the body. This paper is going to focus on one type of cell in particular, the stem cell. The properties of this little cell are amazing. These unique cells self-regenerate through cell division, and in addition to being unspecialized, have the ability to develop into many different specialized cells of the body. Numerous studies have shown the potential of stem cells to cure cancers, as well as slow or reverse the damages of some neurological disorders, yet stem cell researchers have met with both public and legal resistance during their attempts to show the incredible usefulness of these cells. Therefore, the question is, with stem cell research showing the potential to reverse the damage from or slow the progression of neurological disorders, and possible cures for cancer and other diseases and disorders are the possible benefits too much to ignore? The ability to self-regenerate is one the things that makes the stem cell such an appealing area to study. Most cells and organs in the body do not have the ability to self-regenerate, nor self-repair but stem cells can do both. Stem cells themselves are unspecialized, in that they have so special function (Stem Cell Basics, 2009). Part of the beauty of the stem cell is that through cellular...

...Celiac Disease: What? Who? How? Celiac Disease: What? Who? How? Life changing, life long, no cure! This paper is to give knowledge and inform readers on what Celiac Disease is, who it effects, what it affects, and try to explain how it can interrupt a normal, life style to where most of us take for granted. Have you ever wondered what life would be like if you found out you could not eat normal everyday foods that most of us take for granted? What if one day you woke up and found out you could not eat something as simple and as popular as pizza? That you could not eat bread, cake, cookies, lasagna, spaghetti, or even drink beer? That every time you did, you would get sick. Well, for a growing percentage of Americans, that is what is becoming a reality. What is it? How do you get it? What does it do to you? Who can get it? These are just some of the questions I will be answering in this paper. What is Celiac Disease? Well that’s a very good question. Celiac Disease or Gluten-Sensitive Enteropathy is a disease of the intestinal tract. It is a chronic tropical disease of intestinal malabsorption or in simple terms, an allergy to wheat products such as wheat, rye, barley, and oats (Reilly 116). Celiac Disease is a lifelong disease that can only be controlled by understanding CD and following a lifelong diet which excludes wheat, barley, and rye. Celiac Disease is a multisystem disorder that causes the body’s immune system to respond to proteins in certain grains which damage...

Gobbi,1 and Gino R. Corazza1 1First Department of Medicine, Centro per lo Studio e la Cura della Malattia Celiaca, Fondazione Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico Policlinico S. Matteo, University of Pavia, Pavia, Italy Enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL) is a complication of celiac disease (CD). This tumor derives from the neoplastic transformation of aberrant intraepithelial T lymphocytes emerging in celiac patients unresponsive to a gluten-free diet. Poor adherence to a gluten-free diet, HLA-DQ2 homozygosity, and late diagnosis of CD are recognized as risk factors for malignant evolution of CD. Recurrence of diarrhea, unexplained weight loss, abdominal pain, fever, and night sweating should alert physicians to this complication. The suspicion of EATL should lead to an extensive diagnostic workup in which magnetic resonance enteroclysis, positron emission tomography scan, and histologic identification of lesions represent the best options. Treatment includes high-dose chemotherapy preceded by surgical resection and followed by autologous stem cell transplantation, although biologic therapies seem to be promising. Strict adherence to a gluten-free diet remains the only way to prevent EATL. (Blood. 2012;119(11): 2458-2468) Introduction Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic...

Aly1, Safaai Bin Deris2, Nazar Zaki3 Faculty of Computer Science and Information Systems, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia 3 College of Information Technology, UAE University, UAE Ashraf.ahmed@uaeu.ac.ae, safaai@utm.my, nzaki@uaeu.ac.ae increased incidence rate of traffic accidents due to the use of mobile phone while driving. The risk of exposure to electromagnetic field was first highlighted and publicized in the late 1970s by Colorado study [2] that linked magnetic field exposure from power lines to the possible development of child leukemia. The amount of RF generated by cell phone is usually depends on the number of base stations around the area, the cell phone network traffic, and on how far the cell phone from base stations. The amount of the power which sent from a base station could vary from cell phone to another one even within the same area, depends on the interfering from obstacles such as buildings and trees [3]. Although, cell phones are designed to operate at power levels below a threshold for known thermal effects, radio frequency radiation could produce other kinds of effects, called biological effects. In Figure 1, we show a calculation of specific absorbed radiation (SAR) distribution in an anatomical model of human head positioned next to a 125 mW dipole antenna. The resulted Peak SAR is 9.5 W/kg over 1 mg which is a clear indication of the effect. Abstract The growth...

[Arresting people for] medical marijuana is the most hideous example of government interference in the private lives of individuals. It’s an outrage within an outrage within an outrage”~ ~Peter McWilliams~ Author and Advocate for Medical Marijuana Medical Marijuana has found its place once again as the medical plant that is recognized for its healing potential and properties. How the Government has suppressed its positive potential and healing powers for over 25 years. With the help frommany patients, loved ones, research departments and advocate groups, to get the Government’s attention to see and understand that the terminally ill, and the sick should not be treated as common criminals. They are only trying to find some peace and serenity, in their last days. The struggle and fight that has been going on for the last 25 years against the Government. The people were finally heard, with the legalization of Medical Marijuana. The Government wants to regulate everything for their best interest, the positive effect of decriminalizing marijuana for the terminally ill, and the positive economic benefits for our community. Cannabis Sativa, Marijuana, Weed, Herb, Mary Jane these are just a few names that this little 5 leaf plant goes by. How could this...

...Vienna, Vienna, Austria oBjective: During the last decade, mobile phone use increased to almost 100% prevalence in many countries of the world. Evidence for potential health hazards accumulated in parallel by epidemiologic investigations has raised controversies about the appropriate interpretation and the degree of bias and confounding responsible for reduced or increased risk estimates. data sources: Overall, I identified 33 epidemiologic studies in the peer-reviewed literature, most of which (25) were about brain tumors. Two groups have collected data for ≥ 10 years of mobile phone use: Hardell and colleagues from Sweden and the Interphone group, an international consortium from 13 countries coordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. data synthesis: Combined odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) from these studies for glioma, acoustic neuroma, and meningioma were 1.5 (1.2–1.8); 1.3 (0.95–1.9); and 1.1 (0.8–1.4), respectively. conclusions: Methodologic considerations revealed that three important conditions for epidemiologic studies to detect an increased risk are not met: a) no evidence-based exposure metric is available; b) the observed duration of mobile phone use is generally still too low; c) no evidence-based selection of end points among the grossly different types of neoplasias is possible because of lack of etiologic hypotheses. Concerning risk estimates, selection bias, misclassification bias, and effects of the disease on mobile phone use could...

...Alexa Anastasi December 8, 2014 English 1A Research Paper Diet and Cancer: The Fascinating Connection What’s on your plate? That seems to be the overwhelming question in today’s society filled with both health food conscious people and those individuals who do not care and eat junk food most of the time. However what most of these people do not realize is that they are not only jeopardizing their health and decreasing their life expectancy but they are also increasing their chances of getting some form of cancer in their lifetime. The individuals who fuel their bodies with high calorie sugary drinks, fats and processed meats are not doing their bodies any justice they are just fueling the dormant cancer cells in their bodies to run rampant throughout their body and causing something that could have been easily prevented with a change in diet. On the flip side, the health conscious people in the world are already ten times more protected from cancer because of the healthy lifestyle choices they make every day! Don’t be a contributor to America’s high cancer rate, be a game changer and live your life to the fullest with little possibility of cancer, all you have to do is eat those delicious and nutritious fruits and vegetables that can be found all around you! Why would you want to put another hamburger or hot dog in your mouth knowing it has the potential to kill you? I know I wouldn’t because I love my body too much and you should too! So climb on board and let me...
