After university students managed to enrol in what he or she considers being the right course and proper educational institution of his or her choice, it is time for them to be independent (Wyatt, 2008). They will have to come out with an important decision which undergoes a significant stage by choosing where to stay or live during their entire university life. They can either choose to stay in hostel or live at home. Hostel living is a place which provides university students a temporary space after they had left their comfort home. Home living provides them a caring and loving environment which they will never get from the societies. University students should be matured enough to measure the pros and cons of either staying in hostel or living at home. Most of them prefer to have their own path as they assume that they no longer under parents’ supervision. In order to be independent, to enjoy social life and to gain freedom, hostel living is better compared to home living for university students.

Hostel living enables university students to be independent compared to home living. University students learn to handle his or her finances because one has to pay hostel mess bills. They have to consider the usage of electricity and water because they are sharing the bills with their housemates or roommates. When they exceed the limit of usage, they will probably be complained by their housemates or roommates. On the other hand, university students do not have to worry about their finances because their parents will settle it for them when they are at home (http://www.english-test.net/forum/ftopic63107.html). Besides, university students learn to do household chores in hostel such as clean the room and washroom, mop and sweep the floor, wash and fold the clothes, wash the dishes after having their meals and so forth. They should as well learn the skill of cooking in order to save cost. It can also prevent them from eating outside food which is not so healthy and will perhaps leads to health diseases. On the contrary, university students tend to depend on their maid or parents when they live at home. Most of the parents usually pampered their children by not letting them to do house chores. This action will make them become even lazier (http://www.english-test.net/forum/ftopic63107.html). Moreover, university students master the time management skills and the value of punctuality in hostel living. For instance, university students plan their daily routine of life in a more regular and systematic way so that they will not misuse their time by doing something which is a waste of time such as watching dramas and playing computer games for few hours. Time management skills and the value of punctuality help them to arrange their tasks and gain a positive impression in front of their employers in the future at their working place. In contrast, they do not have to concern more on punctuation and time management when they are facing their family members at home as their family members do understand and get use to their attitudes and behaviours. Family members tend to have the sense of tolerable, loving and caring (http://www.blurtit.com/q724677.html).

Hostel living enables university students to enjoy the social life compared to home living. University students will be meeting different types of people such as people who are selfish, friendly, irritating, arrogant, caring, and humble once they enter the campus. Those people give them opportunity to learn the person experience of dealing with others (http://www.english-test.net/forum/ftopic63107.html). It helps them to strengthen their will, control their behaviour and change their perspective. Nevertheless, university students may not have the chance to make contact with different kinds of people if they live at home. Family members mostly will choose not to hurt their children or siblings by giving them well-protection. They do not have the opportunity to communicate with the social world. Their knowledge will be like a frog under the coconut shell. Apart from that, hostel is always the best place for university students to forge bonds of friendship. They will not only learn to take care of each other but also learn things from one another. It is also the perfect setting for group study and cultural interaction (http://www.oppapers.com/essays/Hostel-Life/603182?topic). University students will never feel lonely when living in the hostel because friends are always around and can always chat for few hours. Besides, they can share, exchange and learn from their housemates who are difference in races on cultural values and moral values. Furthermore, those students who are weak in academic performance can always get help from their friends (Nishant, 2009). Group discussions will help them to learn and revise the subject which they take in order to save time (http://www.english-test.net/forum/ftopic63107.html). It also teaches the lesson of mutual cooperation (Nishant, 2009). On the contrary, university students who live at home will never have the possibility to build a rapport relationship with friends. They will not get to know one another and form friendship which often last for life. They join together in all college games, sharpen one another's wits in conversation, and enjoy all the pleasures of good comradeship (Pirzada, 2011). Besides studying and dealing with assignments, university students will still prefer to hang around, organize parties and trips with their close friends whom they will not probably accomplish those tasks with their family members (Paolo). University students will like to make friends with those who have varied tastes and aptitudes according to their own liking. There will always some mutual discussions hold among close friends about their favourite film actors and actresses, dramas that they recently watched, interesting incident happened among them and story-telling. These discussions will add charm to their hostel life. Good arrangements of board games and sports such as swimming, jogging, marathon and playing badminton (Charterjee, 2011).

Hostel living enables university students to gain freedom without parental supervision compared to home living. Most of the youngsters who love freedom prefer to stay in the hostel as they can sleep whenever they like, study whenever and wherever they want. They may get up late in the morning without questioning. Many students do not like to go home during long semester break due to parents’ restriction (http://www.blurtit.com/q923493.html). However, elders are always there to ensure the activities of youngsters when they live at home. They will not be able to outline their own schedule of studies. Besides, they have to bear in mind about the convenience of other family members. They will probably meet with the situation while they are studying or revising in their own room; other family members are talking or gossiping in the living room (Chaterjee, 2011). Once university students have entered the campus, they no longer under the supervisory attention. Parents always try to give their child or children protection, support and caring which they may think is over (Madugundukrishna, 2011). There is no longer spoon-feeding when they come to hostel living. In addition, university students have the rights to make their own decision which will influence their university life such as choosing the right courses to study, the right friends to mix around with and the best hostel to live in. Without proper guidance, university students will have to learn the lesson of following the right path. In the contrary, they will have less opportunity to make decision when they are at home (Madugundukrishna, 2011). Parents do care for their children by planning the proper lifestyle, the best educational institution and also will make sure that their children mingle around with good temperament of friends.

University students will soon find out that living in hostel is great and fun because they get to stay with their roommates, housemates or even their close friends for twenty-four hours a day. They enjoy different kinds of activities, exchange and share feelings and experiences among one another. Therefore, hostel life is also a mixture of sorrow and joy as they will get to experience the real taste of life. Living in the hostel will definitely make them more independent, responsible and discipline. They learn the social etiquette and it will lead to a better and disciplined life. University students can build confidence when staying in the hostel. They will gradually develop their personality by meeting different kind of people, experiencing different type of situations. It helps them to gain knowledge in order to face and solve the problems in their daily life. Besides, university students will be trained how to lend a hand to others and cooperate with one another. They will develop a sense of respect for different types of religion and cultural behaviour little by little. Hence, hostel life indeed helps university students to develop many good qualities, values and make them become good citizens. Thus, hostel living is better than home living for university students in terms of independence, social life and freedom. It is greatly recommended for all university students.

...It is said that home is sweet. But even then life at home cannot be compared to the life in a hostel. At home one has to live as other members of the family live. Elders are always there to check the activities of youngsters. One cannot even frame one's own timetable of studies. One has to keep in mind the convenience of others. One has to study while others keep on talking and gossiping. Often one room, one kerosene lantern or lamp is used jointly by two or three brothers and sisters. If some relative or guest comes in, the whole program of studies is upset. In fact, at home there is no atmosphere for serious studies. There is constant disturbance due to one reason or the other. The life in a hostel is different from that of the home. The greatest blessing of hostel life is independence. You may sleep whenever you like. You may get up late in the morning but none will question you. Apart from the general rules and regulations, which are to be followed necessarily by everyone, one is his own master. It is due to this reason that many students do not like to go home even in long vacations. Those who love freedom love the hostel life. In a hostel, life is full of opportunities of amusement. One is constantly in touch with young men of one's age. One can make friends with one's hostel fellows who have varied tastes and aptitudes. He may choose his friends according to his own liking. ...The power of music: its impact on the intellectual, social and personal development of children and young people Susan Hallam, Institute of Education, University of London Executive Summary Recent advances in the study of the brain have enhanced our understanding of the way that active engagement with music may influence other activities. The cerebral cortex selforganises as we engage with different musical activities, skills in these areas may then transfer to other activities if the processes involved are similar. Some skills transfer automatically without our conscious awareness, others require reflection on how they might be utilised in a new situation. Perceptual, language and literacy skills Speech and music have a number of shared processing systems. Musical experiences which enhance processing can therefore impact on the perception of language which in turn impacts on learning to read. Active engagement with music sharpens the brain’s early encoding of linguistic sound. Eight year old children with just 8 weeks of musical training showed improvement in perceptual cognition compared with controls. Speech makes extensive use of structural auditory patterns based on timbre differences between phonemes. Musical training develops skills which enhance perception of these patterns. This is critical in developing phonological awareness which in turn contributes to learning to read successfully. Speech processing requires similar processing to melodic contour. Eight year old...

Everyday Hostel Life:

...EVERYDAY HOSTEL LIFE IN UNIVERSITY: A SOCIAL APPROACH The dictionary defines a hostel as “an establishment which provides inexpensive food and lodging for a specific group of people such as students, workers or travellers.” Although this definition suffices to explain the concrete structure of a hostel, it fails to encompass the social, intercultural and personal realms of “hostel life”. Here, the keyword is “life”. Staying in a hostel does not only mean availing the facilities of food and lodging but it is also a web of interpersonal relationships, interactions, cultural mingling, development of self-reliance and a sense of belonging which constitutes the social life and personality of an individual. Without the web of social interactions, a hostel would be merely a room rented in a hotel. Hence, the difference between “hostel” and “hostel life” is clearly demarcated. Studying the various knick-knacks of everyday hostel life and the broader social significance of it is the objective of my research. Since I am a college student, I chose to base my studies about hostel life at the university level for the sheer convenience of it. For the purpose of the research, I handed out a questionnaire to a number of university students availing the hostel and interacted with a number of ex-hostelites as well as non-hostelites and thus deduced my detailed observations from it. WHY HOSTEL? The first question that arises while studying hostel life is “why would an individual choose to...

Homelessness In England

...In the assignment, I will be looking at the current level of homelessness in England and Wales, I will be covering many aspects such as why does the society we living in accept the fact that homelessness still exists in England and Wales in the twenty-first century. “In 2014, 112,070 people declared themselves homeless in England a 26% increase in four years” (Henley, 2014). and in Wales more than “9,000 people currently have no place to live which is a rise of 27% from last year.” (wales.org.uk,2012). In English society, the concept of home provides individuals with security, identity and a sense of comfort and belonging that provides things such as warmth, a sense of belonging to something that will always be there and it also helps their emotional well-being. When an individual loses their home, this can can have an impact on their well-being and make them feel a failure. Many individuals end up being homeless due to individuals coming out of prison or care homes, armed services or many individuals will end to being homeless due to drugs and alcohol problems and some with mental illness. Homeless individuals are more likely to have been in prison than the general population , more homeless men have been sentenced than...

Homeless

...Homelessness is one social problem that has been around for decades. I chose this topic because my church ran a home for homeless men for 10 years in Brooklyn, New York. Most people have this preconceived notion that all homeless people have mental issues and dangerous. But it amazed me over the 10 years of volunteering at the shelter and seeing these men coming and go and learning of the circumstances that cause them to become homeless. Homelessness has been and still is a social problem that has been and epidemic in our society. But with the increase in homeless, comes the challenges facing our health care facilities regarding access to health care. According to Nickasch,B.(2009) Homeless individuals expend tremendous energy on survival strategies such as obtaining food, shelter, and a place to rest (Capponi, 1997; McCormack & Gooding,1993). Only after these basic human needs have been satisfied are they able to focus on their other health issues. There are basic needs that humans need to service such as He contended that all people are born with a set of basic needs that they seek to fulfill. Once the lower needs have been gratified, then the next set of higher needs emerge and fulfillment of them is sought. Maslow described the five basic needs in his "Hierarchy of Human Needs." The first set of needs, physiological, include food, water, shelter, sex, and sleep.(Byrd & Mcneal,2006) Access to HealthCare Besides that they also have certain barriers such as access to...
