Still, “86% of HR and business leaders see leadership shortfalls as a top-three issue”. (Prager, 2016, p. 32) If leadership development is important enough to spend $15 billion dollars a year to provide, yet 86% of business leaders and Human Resource officers still consider the development of leadership skills a significant issue because of remaining shortfalls in leadership in spite of the investment, there is plainly a disconnect. The definition of a manager is an individual in an organization who directs the activities of others. In this way, leaders are more focused on the long-term development of an organization whereas managers are more focused on the day-to-day operations of an organization. A manager is more about process.” Anyone in an organization can have leadership qualities and not be in a managerial type position. ...McGregor’s Leadership Model In the modern business world, leadership is an essential key to long-term business success. One professional who has developed a theory associated with leadership is Douglas McGregor. This theory suggests that two types of leadership exist. These types are called X leadership and Y leadership. Differing academics have researched the X and Y leadership views and determined various levels of validity associated with this theory. To determine the value of this theory, the research and example-based use of this theory presented by others must be reviewed. No one can deny that the act being a leader is an enormous job and that the best and worst leaders are remembered throughout history. I have always felt like I was a pretty good leader, but after this semester I have greatly improved on many of my leadership skills. Although I still have some weaknesses when it comes to leadership, this semester has helped me learn a lot about myself as a leader and as a person. Over the semester I learned that I have much more leadership potential than I thought. Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs them in a way that makes the unit more cohesive and coherent. Obviously, leadership can be learned but, the skills and knowledge processed by a leader can be influenced by their traits such as beliefs, ethics, and character. Before this semester I felt that I possessed many of the traits that a good leader would need to have. I am a very motivated person and I pride myself on my beliefs. Throughout the semester I learned how important it is to use my motivation to motivate others and to inspire them to become the best they can be at whatever it is they are doing.
