I have spent most of my childhood in the hospital or sick, so growing up has been different from most children and teens. Since the age of 4, I have received multiple diagnoses. My illnesses have kept me from attending social events. My illnesses have kept me from attending school. Most importantly, I have been unable to make and keep friends.
All of my diagnoses affect my life in some capacity. However, the most restrictive are Chronic Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura, Lupus, Avascular Necrosis, and Deep Vein Thrombosis. Chronic ITP affects my ability to participate in contact sports, ride a bike, or any activity potentially causing trauma. Lupus is an autoimmune disorder, and can affect all aspects of my life at any given time. Avascular

Psy 270dsm-Iv Problems

...a standard for diagnoses to be standardized across psychology; however, the DSM-IV is not as precise for diagnosing personality disorders as some psychologists would like. Give an example of each of the following problems identified in your readings and explain how these problems could negatively affect a diagnosis. 1. Some criteria used for reaching a diagnosis cannot be observed directly. The DSM-IV has been criticized for diagnosing patients with disorders because of their reliability. A patient is diagnosed by a clinician based on the patient telling them their symptoms, when it is possible that the patient is exaggerating and this can result in a patient being mis diagnosed because the clinician may not have paid close attention to body language and actions from the patient. 2. Personality disorders can be similar to each other. A person can be diagnosed with one or more personality disorders because symptoms are related to one another according to the DSM-IV. With the symptoms of personality disorders being similar in nature to one another it does make it hard to diagnose a person with a single personality disorder according to the DSM-IV. 3. People with different personalities can be given the same diagnosis. Each person is different so therefore one person’s symptoms may not be the same as another person. The DSM-IV does not account for a person’s individuality. An individual’s personality affects how they react to different situations in life, this can lead to...

Stress Management

...My Stress Action Management Plan Southern New Hampshire University There are many factors in life that we cannot control. Traffic when you’re late to work, work and school deadlines that must be met, children who would rather quarrel than agree. These situations can and most likely will induce stress on an individual. Stress is defined as a state of negative tension in the emotional well-being of a person. Stress is the process on how we handle and cope with our environment (Myers, 2014).  This tension, or stressors, can create anxiety, unintended pressure, and can completely hassle a person’s life. Stress relates to the field of Psychology in that it affects the bodies physical and mental state. Negative stress can cause what experts define as psychophysiological illnesses, which include hypertension and migraines (Myers, 2014). Negative stress can also be more taxing on other physical ailments with certain diseases. Throughout the course of my life I’ve had many ups and many downs.  There have been situations that I have been in control of, and others that I have not and the stress of these situations has affected my life in different ways. The first stressor in my life I would say would have to be the biggest thing out of my control.  February 14, 2011 I was sent to the hospital with a horrible headache.  Eventually, my vision became impaired and an MRI and Spinal tap revealed the diagnoses of Multiple Sclerosis.  I had never heard of this disease or known anyone...

Rehabilitation Centers

...orthopedic injuries, spinal cord injuries, stroke or other traumatic brain injuries. Patients can be treated in either an inpatient or outpatient setting. This normally depends on the severity of their injury or illness. A patient who has suffered a stroke, for example will be treated within the hospital by therapists before being discharged and prescribed outpatient therapy. Stroke patients are also treated under more than one rehabilitation discipline. This means that they will see not only a licensed physical therapist but in many cases, an occupational and speech therapist as well. There are two main distinctions between physical therapists, orthopedic, neurological and pediatric. Orthopedic therapists work with a number of different diagnoses but the majority of their patients suffer from a muscle, joint or spinal injury. Advancements in medicine have allowed surgeons to perform joint replacement surgeries. Patients who have had a total knee, hip or shoulder replacement will more often than not end up in the hands of a physical therapist. According to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) those therapists who decide to become a neurological physical therapist will specialize “in the evaluation and treatment of individuals with movement problems due to disease or injury of the nervous system” (2012). These conditions include traumatic brain injuries, stroke patients, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and vestibular disorders that can cause dizziness and...

...sure the decision is well thought out and are the right decisions for each person. Concerning that point in life when individuals have to make a life-changing decision, the following should also include: who will this decision affect, implementation of the commitment to the decision and consider different alternatives. The choice making process has six stages. These stages comprise of recognizing and diagnosing the issue, producing elective results, assessing options, making the decision, actualizing the choice, and assess the choice. Deciding to return to a classroom and what school to go to was an individual issue that would have done well to be deciphered. I didn't utilize the choice making process; assuming that I had I am not certain if my choice might have been the same. Choosing to backpedal and return to school was something I contemplated for a couple of months however taking the steps to do so was something that took just an hour to do. The choice making process has six stages yet I might have just taken three of the aforementioned steps in my methodology. The choice making stages are to recognize and diagnose the issue, produce elective results, assess options, make the decision, actualize the choice, and assess the choice (Management, 2011). Yet all of this is supposed to be making our lives easier. I openly accept all of the changes but feel like I have gotten a little lost in everything. This class has definitely helped me understand and become familiarized with things that are new to me. Mobile computing has impacted our lives in so many ways. The smart phone and the tablet has made an unlimited amount of information available to us just by a click of the keys. I found an article about how junior doctors are using handheld computers, replacing the school book, at a hospital. They are finding that there are some positives and some negatives to using these to help diagnose and share information Within the study group there were individual interviews done with each user. Within the first category, people had a feeling of uncertainty about using handheld technology in medical care. There was a lack of confidence when using these devices. Books were a comfort to them. Once their confidence was boosted they found that there was an unlimited access to medical information. These were a portable and time saving way to attain new insights into unknown medical area (Axelson). It was much easier and quicker to keep up to date on the ever changing medical field. All of the devices had the same programs installed on them so there was a sense of consistency. Students...

Our Children and Adhd

...OUR CHILDREN AND ADHD AMANDA WENTZEL COLUMBIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY Abstract ADHD also known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a condition that is near to my heart. My 15 year old daughter was diagnosed with ADHD at age 6. We have struggled with this since day one. I have researched ADHD, the protocol for diagnosing ADHD, coping with ADHD and of course treatment methods for ADHD. It has came to my attention that ADHD is becoming diagnosed more frequently and that children are sometimes misdiagnosed with ADHD and subsequently treated for the condition and it may be unnecessary. ADHD is becoming common yet the diagnosing method is pretty vague and the medications for this are sometimes harmful if not needed. There are other forms of treatments and there are also coping skills and lifestyle changes that can be beneficial for those who have ADHD and their families. I researched some of these other methods and the facts on ADHD. I have found some interesting information that I hope will help others that deal with this diagnosis. This paper states actual facts and it is my intention to help others understand ADHD and know the facts surrounding the diagnosis and treatments. People are becoming more and more familiar with ADHD and it seems to be being diagnosed more frequently. First things first, what is ADHD? ADHD is abbreviated for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is diagnosed by symptoms. One of those...

...she ever meet a man who was not an abuser?” Obviously, the impression of Ms. LaViolette, as being a man hater, is legitimate in the minds of many people. She has left that impression with many readers and viewers of her work. This is not to say that Ms. LaViolette is a man hater, just because a number of people think her so. That would be unfair. It would be fair to say this. Her behavior, her writing, her court testimony, has left a significant number of people with the impression that she is a man hater. I don’t know if she is a man hater or is not. If she is, this is America and she has a right to hate men if she wants to. I don’t know that she hates men, hates Republicans, hates Democrats, hates the New England Patriots. I also, do not care to know. Decision Making Process Paper

... 2 Decision-Making Process Paper In everyday life we are challenged in making sound decision, decision that will last for a life time. Folk often wonder after making a decision if it was the right choice, will it affect the people around me, was this a good choice for my family, and will the decision affect them. The decision- making process should be one that makes a positive change. Can the decision making process work for organization as well as individuals. Before changing to the job that I have now, I had to decide if leaving the Register of Voters to take a job with the East Baton Rouge Parish School System would work out in my favor. Before making a hasty decision I listed my pros and cons to see what job will be the best, what job would I like working at, would there be room for advancement on the job, and which job had the best benefits. In making the right decision some of my decision- making came from that of the Stages of Decision-Making Process that we are learning about in the first chapter in the book. Stages of decision making that the book speaks of are “identify and diagnose the problem, generate alternative solutions, evaluate alternatives, make the choice, implement the decision, and evaluate the decision” (Bateman & Snell, 2011, p 89). The steps that I followed when making my decision were, am I pleased with the...

Decision Making

...Process Making decisions can be easy or difficult, but in any case one must do their best to make the best choice. The decision –making process contains six stages to which managers or any individuals can utilize to make appropriate decisions. Identify and diagnose the problem, Generate alternative solutions, Evaluate alternatives, Make the choice, Implement the decision, and Evaluate the decision. A decision like home-ownership should be made with specific information to go by. Critical thinking is also something that should be included into the decision-making process. Critical thinking helps one to consider all angles, and think outside of the box. The decision Home-ownership is a step that most Americans take; however, not everyone makes the best decisions while going through the process. In 2006 I purchased my first home, and was not educated about the process at all. Knowing the best areas, what the highest and lowest homes were for the area, what damages, if any, had been done to the home, and simply making sure I was getting the best for my dollar. The six stages of decision-making are some that I consider; however, some I did not. The end choice was one of force and guilt, not a decision-making process. My decision process The stages I took to come to the decision of buying a home were very little. I considered how much money I had, what area I wanted to live in, space, and cuteness. I identified...

Most parents who seek treatment for a child labeled with autism face many dead-ends and obstacles concerning what are best for their child. . Having a child who is autistic will be a struggle throughout both of your lives. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ADS) adversely affects a child’s communication, socialization, and behavior.
