...only one that knows what most things are and what to do. Piggy seems like the only one with common sense. Piggy says, “ an’ this is an island. Nobody don’t know we’re here. Your dad don’t know, nobody don’t know−” (14) Piggy is the only one that thinks no one knows the kids are on the island. This shows Piggy is very clever because he is using common sense and proving his point. Piggy also knows what the shell they find is, and shows common sense towards it, “−a conch; ever so expensive. I bet if you wanted to buy one you’d have to pay pounds and pounds and pounds− he had it on his garden wall, and my auntie−” (16) This quote shows that Piggy knows what the conch is. Therefore, he is characterized as smart. During this same scene, Piggy tells Roger what to use the conch for, "We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us—" (16) this quote tells us that Piggy appears very intelligent because he knows how to use the conch. He knows that the conch is loud enough for everyone on the island to hear it and come together. Piggy is also characterized as very sensitive. He gets bullied a lot and ganged up on by the people on the island. This is why Piggy gets very easily offended by people. The one person that is especially mean to Piggy is Ralph. Piggy gets very frustrated with Ralph, “About being called Piggy. I said I didn’t care as long as they didn’t call me Piggy; an’ I said not to tell and you went an’ said straight out−,” (25) Ralph tells everyone...

...observation, do not start with their tasks, they start with their time. And they do not start out with planning. ...students’ facebook usage and their academic performance. The paper was also intended to find how pervasive the use of facebook by University students plays a role in their academic success. A 20 question questionnaire was designed and sent out to approximately 150 students of different Universities in Nigeria. To capture the main types of University, a Federal University, a State University and a Private University cut across the nation were chosen. Of the questionnaire sent out, 81% of them were within the age of 18 to 21. The Independent variables measured how actively students used facebook, including how much time they spend on facebook, how often they update their status, post on friends’ walls, comment on others’ pages, the level of their privacy settings, and how many friends and photo albums they have. In order to accurately measure students’ academic achievement, we had student’s self‐report their in‐class participation, attendance, as well as grade point average. Six pre‐determined hypotheses were tested. First, the more time a student spends on facebook, the lower grade point average the student has. Secondly, the higher a student’s privacy settings are on facebook, the higher that student’s grade point average is. Thirdly, the more a student updates his or her facebook status, the less likely they are to have good class attendance. ...technologies have substantially altered the way humans interact. Between email, texting, social networking, instant messaging, and Skype, people now have the resources that would make it possible to spend days or months without coming face-to-face with another person, yet still remain connected with the world. I love my smartphone. I am in awe at just how much phones have advanced in the last 20 years. From the first one that was gigantic in size, then leading to a smaller simple flip phone to these beautiful, amazing slim pieces of hardware that can do more than I could have ever imagined a phone doing. Smartphones are something to be amazed with. Smartphones can certainly make our lives easier for us as we use them for everyday tasks such as communicating, checking our calendars, using as alarm clocks, as calculators, setting reminders and so much more. However, as smartphones keep advancing with new ways to make our lives easier, are they hindering our natural need for social interactions? I have chosen my topic on “Smartphones and their Effect on our Social Interaction.” How often do you see groups of people having coffee together or out at dinner with everyone's faces buried in their phones. Maybe they had nothing to talk about. But could it be, just maybe, we are slowly forgetting how to fill life's awkward silences with polite conversation. Even worse,...

...“Wasting money or saving it to the future”. I appreciate your precious time and attention to my speech. If you have any questions, you are welcome to ask at the end of my presentation. So let me start from a brief overview of the main points I’m going to touch upon in my presentation. My outline consists of: Introduction Body: 1. Why do people waste money as soon as they get it? 2. Pros/Cons of saving money 3. Finding the middle path Conclusion Predictions Recommendations Introduction First of all, let me explain the general overview. Each person wants to live in luxury that there was enough money not only for today, but for the future as well. The main problem is that the majority of people do not know how to live, how much money to spend and where to spend them. But the concept of luxury, individuals’ society understood differently. For some people it is a complete luxury social comfort, for someone buying the long-awaited car. Body: Why do people waste money as soon as they get it? Moving to the first main point of my speech, I would like to say why people spend money so fast. We realize that the worst wasteful spending simply comes out of bad habits and a tendency to do things because we’ve always done them- but if you’re trying to change your lifestyle for the better and get real with your money, you’re going to want to look at the little habitual tasks you take for granted. Spending money actually makes many people feel more powerful. Whether it is handing over...

...every business needs to invest in technology to compete. Technology is both a cost of doing business, and an opportunity to do more business. Most people you meet and talk with recognize the necessity of having a computer, an email address, and a web site, but still look at the upfront cost more than other issues. After spending some time working with dozens of friends involved in businesses, one can think now it's time to take a step back and look at the big picture of technology in business. Let's take a reporter's view of the topic, and ask the basic questions: who, what, where, why, when, and how much? Why? What are the benefits of technology for a business? There are many, but most fall under a few categories: • • • • • Reach more potential customers, develop a business relationship with potential customers Streamline operations, reduce costs, improve efficiency, maximize profit, minimize waste, devote talent to core business instead of overhead Provide better service to customers Support better relationships with key partners Allow customers to better guide the business The very first question businesses should ask before spending any money or time on technology is, “why am I doing this?” If there is not a core business benefit to be gained, why do it in the first place? How Much? Established businesses outside the technology industry typically spend between ½ percent and 10 percent of their annual revenue on technology spending, depending mostly on the industry. Manufacturing...

...getting into debt — financial institutions make it as easy as possible. But, when you face a mountain of debt, don’t expect much help from them in overcoming the situation. Debt can bring anxiety, stress and unhappiness; but, by being aware of your financial situation you can enjoy life without permanently battling against the problem of debt. To avoid suffering from serious debt problems consider these suggestions: 1. Buy what you need It’s easy to buy things we actually don’t need or very rarely use. Look in your wardrobe and count the number of clothes that you rarely wear. Before buying a good, try to evaluate its usefulness to yourself; give it a mark out of 10. If you give items an honest score, you will think twice before spending $100 on your 7th pair of designer shoes. If you’re an impulsive buyer, try waiting a day before buying something. If you really want and need it you can come back the next day. 2. The $70 dollar test If you have a real problem with excess spending, try this test. For a week, give yourself $70 cash, and put away all credit cards. This forces you to live on $10 a day. When you are faced with a strict income, it forces you to be very careful in what you spend. It will make you realise what is really indispensable and which spending is mere extravagance. This will also force you to be inventive. For example, rather than spending $15 on a take away lunch, you may make your own. Quite often, by taking these steps we realize our previous...

...“Are you kidding me? I can’t spend a minute without my phone!” This is the sort of reaction that is pulled out of almost every teenager if you try to take their smartphones away. They sleep with it, eat with it, wake up with it nested underneath them somewhere on the bed, and even go to the bathroom with it. It seems like these smartphones have become such an integrated part in the lives of today’s young generation that it has become an infestation. When you ask them something their fingers go tap tap on their mobile devices to ‘google’ the answer. Even to check what time it is, they rely on their devices to know the date and time. It is certainly alarming to see the amount of human dependence on these gadgets because their absence would certainly render these...
