We all love our safety. We instantly and maybe subconsciously crave our safety. Much to our surprise, our safety brings risks of its own. The safer we feel, the greater the chances of us taking risks will be. According to Maia Szalavitz, “people have a preferred level of risk, and they modulate their behavior to keep risk at that constant level” (253). This modulation can unintentionally expose us to greater risks than ever before.
I have seen this balancing of risks take place right in front of my eyes. The teacher walks around placing quizzes on students’ desk. One unprepared student asks the teacher “Exactly how much is this quiz worth?” The teacher replies with practiced ease, “It is worth a daily grade.” The student looks relieved at the
