...When I first learned the news of the fitspirit run, my immediate reaction turned from surprise to a distaste for the training and the run because I saw no point in doing something I believed I wasn’t capable of. The first few days of training were the most challengining because I was still trying to adjust to the frequent runs but as I was starting to have faith in myself, the runs got easier and everytime I ran, I felt myelf feeling more happier and not only because I was able to run for a long period of time but because I achieved something I thought I never would. In addition, I found myself having fun during the runs and found each run to be less challenging. Even though my running improved considerably over the numerous weeks of training and I was capable of running the 5k, the fitspirit run still seemed harder because I made it a big deal out of it. There were only a few obstacles I had to overcome. The largest obstacle I conquered was having confidence in myself. The other barriers that I had to reaching my goal were my lack of motivation, impatience, comparing myself to others, and fear of not achieveing it. Nevertheless, I was able to...

...Running Running, we were always running. Running for our lives, running from our lives, but no matter what the reason, we were always running. The only time we ever stopped was about every few hours so we could rest and eat. “Who are we running from,” I would always ask my parents. They would just look at me for a while like I wouldn’t understand till I was older. Nothing else. Nothing more. During the day, there was much silence. Most noises came from the wind rustling through leave or the occasional bird. The only time anyone ever spoke was to hurry someone else up or to give directions. All this silence meant that there was a lot of time to think. I would mostly think about my life before we started running. I would think about playing in the park with other boys from...

...when I was young, I find that many of my influences come from my closest family members. I was starting pre-school when I first started listening to how people around me were talking. I would listen to my mother and father talk on the phone or to each other and found myself starting to adopt their special language. My sister is six years older than me. Naturally children will look up to their older siblings. I, like many others, would copy exactly what my sister would do. She would say “crap” or “gosh” and sure enough I was running around using the word in complete wrong context. My mother and father were somewhat strict with how my two siblings and I talked. When I was running around yelling words that we weren’t supposed to say, it was almost a routine for me to get in trouble and eventually end up tattling on my sister. My original language came from my family, yet unlike others many slang words were absence from it. I find that many of my most strict proper...

...up watching my grandparents successfully own and run a preschool. They always taught me that if you ever want to be successful in life, you must focus on your studies and continue with education past high school. Their influence made me open my eyes to the knowledge school offered and I really thrived. I enjoyed going to school and learning subjects I knew little about and always put my 100% effort into every assignment I turned in. In Junior high, I joined various book clubs and different school programs which enhanced my education. After high school, immediately I went to college but without knowledge of where I wanted to focus my education on so I received my degree in general studies. After getting my Associates degree, I began to focus on my career. I began working for a fortune 500 home warranty company as a clerk answering phones and worked my way up to Project Manager. As a project manager, one of my best projects was leading a team that helped research, create and implement a new software for the entire company. That job changed my life. Through the experiences I went through as Project Manager, I learned that I loved business and in turn wanted to continue with my education even further. Once I transferred to a 4 year college, I changed to a Business Degree with a focus on accounting in which I excelled in all of my major classes with A’s and B’s. The information I learned through college from my professors and my peers proved to be invaluable to my career. I...

...Oh how my life has changed, but it is not just my life it is everyone’s now with all this inventing going on the things we have today are so different then when I was growing up. In 1861 when I was a child we lived in poor little run down shacks of wood on dirt streets with no iceboxes to keep our food from spoiling, we had to keep our food in cellars or in running streams in our back yards. Now a day’s kids ride trolley’s to and from school, but when I was a child we had to walk for miles in the snow, rain, and sometimes violent storms. These kids think they have it bad, well I wish they were around to see what all we had compared to what they have today. The Morse code for example we didn’t have that but they do and they can send messages to people all over the country. They have iceboxes which also mean they have fresh food for weeks. They have running water in the house so no more running to the well to get fresh water. Bathrooms in the house, no more running outside late at night to use the bathroom. The time is changing so much. An industrial revolution is happening right before my eyes. Things are being produced more rapidly and efficiently. Factories are hiring large amounts of workers which means a lot of new houses are being built. There are apartments for people who don’t need houses and large housing facilities for people with large families. Our lives are changing so much that I hardly get to see my wife, I come in from the factory, eat...

...with the Nine Steps. Step 1 - Set The Scene A good deal of my work involves giving storytelling workshops for large corporations. They're usually one-day workshops at some remote location like a conference resort or a fancy hotel. When you combine the natural stress that accompanies airports, shuttle busses and hotels with the physical work of being on your feet for 8 hours, it's pretty exhausting. A year ago, after one of these workshops, I went back to my room and laid down on the bed. I woke up four hours later at 9 pm in the same clothes I'd worn for the workshop. It was dark outside and for a moment, I didn't know where I was. It was at that point that I realized I had to make a change. Either I had to stop doing one-day workshops, which I love, or I had to get in better shape and develop more stamina. Step 2 - Introduce the Characters (There are no other characters in this story. In the Nine Steps of Story Structure, introduce the characters when they naturally appear in the story. This step is not necessarily Step 2.) Step 3 - Begin the Journey In March 2009, I made the decision to get back into running. I'd taken up running many times in my life, but never very seriously. At 59, I knew it was going to be like starting from scratch. And it was. I found a running path near my house along an abandoned railroad track: the Rock Island Trail. It was 1.9 miles to the end, 3.8 miles round trip. On my first run, I had to stop and walk after about ¼ mile. It was...

...“The reason some people have turned against you and walked away from you without reason, has nothing to do with you. It is because I have removed them from your life because they cannot go where I am taking you next. They will only hinder you in your next level because they have already served their purpose in your life. Let them go and keep moving.Greater is coming.” Says The Lord. -Anonymous. This means that just because someone leaves your life you shouldn’t let that define you, don’t make mistakes and choices you wouldn’t wanna live with. In my story I chose God and if I didn’t I would have been different and hurt. My life before the change was great. I had friends, a family, and a relationship.Throughout the years I lost some people and gained some people in my life. The reason I wasn’t treated so good by those people, and I tried not to let loosing them affect me, because I of course had others in my life plus I was only a kid. I was happy all the...

...preventable death in the U.S. Up to one out of every five children in the U. S. is overweight or obese, and this number is continuing to rise. Childhood obesity has greatly increased and they are three main things that have caused this, they are the increase of fast food, increase of technology, and change of family habits. These three things are the main reason why childhood obesity has been increasing so much in America, and it is becoming a very dangerous problem. Fast food has become a huge part of America in the last 30 years. Families lives have became very busy and fast food is a very easy way for parents to feed their children when they don’t have time to cook a meal. What parents don’t realize is how bad fast food is for people and how horrible it is to eat on a daily basis. Every day, nearly one-third of U.S. children aged 4 to 19 eat fast food, which likely packs on about six extra pounds per child per year and increases the risk of obesity.( www.cbsnews.com/2100-204_162-591325.html) Fast food is made with tons of preservatives and things like high fructose corn syrup. When anyone especially children eat this on a daily basis the food will start to do horrible things to the body and mainly it makes the person add weight at a fast rate. Fast food restaurants make their places very children friendly with play places and happy meals with toys. Doing this attracts families to go there so their kids can play and have a good...

...How Harry Potter Changed My Life Written by: Colin Rhoney English 111 (A2) Ever since I first began to read, books have always been a major influence in my life. My childhood was full of many memories of reading many wonderful books. I remember spending hours upon hours going from shelf to shelf, looking for new books. The library became almost like a treasure hunt, searching every row and every book before discovering just the right book to read. The most exciting part was when I would come across a new book that I could immerse myself into and imagine all the possible adventures I could have. The library became a safe haven, a place where I could escape the outside world and the troubles it brought, and jump into many great books where happy endings are endless. As I grew up, my yearning and passion for books gradually turned into a lost joy. The excitement I got from going to the library was no longer present; the happiness I received from secluding myself from the world in my room, spending hours of time reading, was gone. All to be blamed by one small step in my life: middle school. So when, in ninth grade, a group of classmates longed for me to read a book called Harry Potter, I was a little skeptical and curious as to what it was and why they wanted me to read it. Since my obsession for books was pretty much gone, I was a little hesitant and it took me a while to actually pick up the first book. After long debates and discussions of how fascinating the books were...

...and rewarding run of my life thus far. Squinting under the bright sunlight, I readied myself, preparing to give everything I had in what would be the culmination of my high school cross country career. Hearing my heartbeat in my ears, remaining steady with deep breaths, I tried to recall what had inspired me to end up here. Nearly three years earlier, I had a similar case of nervous energy, as I waited to begin a much different challenge. Deciding that I wanted to take part in my school's cross country team, I had never ran over a mile before by choice. After playing soccer my freshman year, my family and friends convinced me to run, to keep me conditioned for the next season. I didn't realize how much work would be necessary to earn a spot competing. At first, my goal was simply not to die, as that's what...

...Life Span Christopher Cook Point University Life Span I can say that my life has not been prefect all these years, but I must still consider that I have had a good life compare too many others around the world. I have seen several ups and downs throughout life, but through them all I’ve managed to turn the negative situations into positive outcomes, and the positive situations into greater achievements. There are several reasons why I feel that I have had a wonderful life and will explain what factors contributed my success and happiness in life. I am sharing several key events that happened while I was growing up that influenced my adulthood. I truly believe I became separated from a lot of my parental influences and depended on reading books, and the influence of friends from church, which strayed me into the right paths for my life. My life started thirty-five years ago on October 22, 1977. I was born in Carrollton, Georgia to Mike and Sherry Cook. I had somewhat of a typical childhood parents, brother, and a dog. When I was born both of my parents were very young at the age of nineteen, and had no money at all. Both of my parents had just got out of school, and had just started working their first real full-time jobs. After I was born my mother decide that she what to be a stay at home mother, which really put a finical strap on our family. So my dad had to pick of the difference of her income by getting two jobs to support our family. After about...

...explains how he has finally lost hope and any sense of cheer, and now has the true feeling of being a slave. He uses many dark sounding phrases to truly put emphasis on how terrible his experience with Mr. Covey was. He really wants the reader to understand how horrible and dehumanizing slavery is. He explains that no weather prevented them from field work, it did not matter how late or how dark it was, they would work for unbearable amounts of time. That is when he explains he lost hope. I believe he is trying to tell his message to all people in power, and the people who are uneducated in the world, to portray how terrible slavery is. As we go onto paragraph two, Frederick Douglass continues to talk about...

...choice I thought about freedom and now my view has changed. Overall the lecture by Barry Schwartz opened my eyes to something new. His main idea was that choice has made us more paralyzed and more dissatisfied. Schwartz explains the cons of having the ability to choose in the modern, affluent, western society. He used an example that I can relate to when he talked about buying a pair of jeans and how when he was younger there was on type of jeans and now there are so many choices. I know when I go to buy a pair of jeans and I realize I do not like them and never wear them I usually get mad at myself because I chose to buy them. Schwartz was very entertaining and does a good job engaging with the audience. Not only was Schwartz appealing to the audience, I also seemed to have an interest in his overall lecture. He used some humorous short picture cartoons that made me laugh a little bit. At first I thought the lecture was going to be a bore but after watching it I realized I was wrong. I appreciated the fact that he used a lot of short picture cartoons that was funny to help support and get his point across to the entire audience. I somewhat agree with Schwartz idea when he stated that choice leaves us dissatisfied because just this past weekend I went shopping for a pair of running sneakers for exercising purposes. There were so many sneakers different shapes, sizes, prices and brands to choose from. I would try on one pair of running sneakers and I would like the sneakers...
