...what we do all the time; we evaluate people around us by looking at their behaviors, and physical attributes. We decide who is friend and who is foe by social evaluation. It is clear that adults rapidly do this, but how about infants? Do they also differentiate people who help, and people who harm? The authors of the article, Hamlin, et al. hypothesized that preverbal infants do social evaluation. The hypothesis is then confirmed with the results suggesting, “preverbal infants assess individuals on the basis of their behavior towards others” (Hamlin et al. 2007). They prefer a helpful individual to a hinderer, prefer a helper to a neutral individual, and prefer a neutral individual to a hinderer. They assessed 6 and 10-month-old infants by measuring their looking times and their preference of choice. They conducted 3 experiments and in these experiments they used a helping stimulus, a hindering stimulus and a neutral stimulus. In experiment 1, when infants were encouraged to choose between the helper and the hinderer, they prefer to choose the helper. When 10-month-olds, but not 6-month-olds, watched the climber approaching the hinderer which is novel to infants, they looked longer at the screen, compared to when the climber approaching the helper which is unsurprising. In experiment 2, “infants overwhelmingly chose the helper when this action was embedded in a social context”. In experiment 3, it is clear that the infants prefer the helper and avoid the hinderer when they were...

...Human Service Professionals and Helping Skills Sara Ouellette BSHS/305 May 23, 2016 Cassidy Hawf Human Service Professionals and Helping Skills In our society today there is a great need for helping professionals being able to work with individuals as well as their families and communities. The dysfunction that starts in a single family can spread to affect many people throughout a geographical area. Helping just the one individual sometimes is not the answer because without correcting their surroundings, what you do to help them will be in vain. Once reintroduced to the situation that they had been removed from for treatment or help they will revert to their old ways and behaviors that brought them to you in the first place and thus a vicious cycle will begin. It is important to know your client base and what helping services will work best to get positive results. The Helping Process There are infinite ways of helping people. There are however set practices that all helping professionals learn and will use in their day to day interactions with their clients. There are five stages of the helping process that can be applied to every client: 1. Physical setting and review – Before your client ever arrives you should make sure that your space is inviting and comfortable. It should put your client at ease and make it easier to talk to them. You also will have gone over any files that have been provided to you so that you have a back ground on your client...

There are so many different problems that affect so many different people each in a different way. Problems clients face range from unemployment, abuse (physical, mentally, violent crimes, culture changes, drug and alcohol addictions, and homelessness. ...Client Paper Teresa Hunt BSHS/305 8-16-14 Amy Barker Client Paper Identifying a client’s problem is a crucial part of the human service worker’s job. The entire purpose of the client coming in is to address a need that is unmet. Before the helper can even begin to plan a solution, they use one of five ways to identify the problem: developmental problems, situational problems, hierarchical needs, and problems that stem from changes in society and the environment. Once the helper knows what the problem is, the communication is a crucial skill to have. Developmental theorists see life as a series of milestones that occur from birth until death. We all go through every stage but the ways people experience them may vary. One’s values, beliefs and childhood experiences also play a role in how a person goes through stages. A developmental model is useful when the helper has a client whose problem is considered deviant, such as criminal activities, like acts of violence, or mental illness. Situational problems are the result of violent crimes, accidents, major changes in life, such as a move to a new city or unemployment, and natural disasters. All humans may face a situational problem at some point in their lives. The result is problems that may be long or short term. Unemployment is a common situational problem today. It has a drastic impact on a person’s ability to provide necessities such as food, shelter and clothing for themselves and their family. ...

...SOCI221 – Interpersonal Skills of the Helper Case Study and Critique NAME: Rui ZHANG STUDENT NUMBER: 244730 DATE: 5 April 2015 WORD COUNT: 841+780 Part 1 – personal learning In part 1, I will describe what I have learnt from Egan model stage ǀ and stage II, and all my personal feeling observations from working with class client. According on the book, Egan model stage 1 is to help the helper address a main question which is 'what is going on?' (Egan 1994, p. 200). But before the helper and patient start any virtual consult, a healthy trust should be built up between with them. In the class, when I try to approach to Costa, he came into conflict with all my questions straight away. As a practitioner I would like to expect a perfect clinic patient, who was easy to talk with and carried less wariness. But Costa is kind of difficult to deal with. He is 50 years old Greek male, married, has 2 children in the college. His wife brought him into the clinic. She was quite worried about him, because he has prostate problems, over weight issue, hypertension and type 2 diabetes. In the first consultation, Costa seemed does not want to talk much about his illness state. I knew most guys refuse to talk about prostate cause it releases to genitals. He maybe feel shame and embarrassed about this kind of topic. In the Egan model stage I what I should do is to make him to trust me. As long as...

...Concerns and Helping Skills Everyday individuals come across issues in life that cannot be resolved on their own. These problems keep those people from becoming productive citizens due to the many barriers that they encounter. Some of the issues can be anywhere from people not being able to meet their own needs, unable to reach self-sufficiency or economic stability, and individuals unable to cope with new problems in the modern world. There are many needs or requirements for social care as well, stemming from those that are unable to take care of themselves, social control for those who display inappropriate behavior, and rehabilitative services to promote self-help in individuals lacking independence. More specifically, many clients and communities struggle with childcare issues, which can sometimes be a huge burden on families. There are also those with debilitating diseases such as AIDS/HIV, domestic violence, homelessness, lack of education and skills, physical disabilities, mental illness, substance abuse, sexual and verbal abuse as well as individuals recovering from natural disasters. For decades now, people have asked the human services professionals for assistance in learning how to cope and overcome obstacles while growing as a person by strengthening their own abilities and becoming more productive and resilient. As a helper, the human service professional is responsible for providing a variety of services focusing on prevention while also maintaining a quality of...

...Hickman Discharge Summary Pondering what an effective treatment plan is, well you have come to the right place. This piece gives an explanation of a definition along with an example of a current client, Jack Smith. The treatment plan that was delivered to Jack Smith in Week 3 was an assessment form completed with his information to help initiate a plan and achieved his goals according to his basic needs (Summers, 2012). The following segments give a description of how Jack’s treatment plan provided appropriate services based on his goals and clarifies the effectiveness of his treatment plan. In addition, there is also a description of how Mr. Smith’s feedback can be applied following an intervention and how the helper will benefit from the situation. Lastly, the paper also delivers a description of when Jack’s case can be closed and the reasons why this would be done. Let’s take a look back at what treatment plan is, it is what a professional does to enable the client to reach the goal. In this case, the helper gave Mr. Smith a task to do that will help him complete one of the objectives. A treatment intervention is what the worker is doing to help Jack complete and work toward his ultimate goal. The goals and objectives that were provided to our client Jack Smith consisted of goals that will meet his needs around the household, assistance with intake of medication on a daily basis and the transportation that helped him attend his regular doctor visits. The services that...

...Filipinos helpers in Hong Kong are at the risk of being maltreated Introduction Castillo Clariza Avenales who was in her age of 33, had her right thumb being chopped by her male employer after she reported his sexual misconduct to his wife last year. She was not the first one experienced such an unfortunate incident. Hong Kong, which comes to the top rank in world domestic labor employment, has long been seen as somewhere nearby to earn good salaries for better livings by the Filipinos. However, these people might place themselves under the danger of being abused in this workplace. In a 2001 survey conducted by the Hong Kong Human Rights Monitor which is a shadow committee of the United Nations, 1000 maids out of 2500 claimed they were physically abused while 175 of them said they were either harassed or raped. (Stafford, 2001, p. 5) This number was underestimated, according to the Hong Kong Overseas Maid-Employer Association dean, since it was not precise and scientific enough as the police figures which the authorities never revealed. It is actually not uncommon to see Filipinos getting involved in discrimination, unfair treatments, and even violence. Discrimination, unfair treatments, abuses and violence Gatmaytan (1997) stated that “Filipinas are imported by other countries for jobs their own citizens will not perform and for wages domestic citizens would not accept,” (p. 247) which is very true. In Hong Kong, Filipinos are receiving salaries that two times or...

...or a group of people in a particular area or neighborhood. The Human Services “Helper” will need to develop many different skills in order to service each client within such diverse echelons. The Problem Chain Clients enter the human service delivery system as individuals with many different perspectives such as psychological, biological, cultural, financial, educational, vocational, and spiritual elements. These elements include life experiences such as family, friends, health, school, work, legal status, residence, safety and security, finances, play, well-being, and personal accomplishments. These perspectives are assimilated into the individual to create the whole person that the human service professional experiences. There are a few possible theories that are used to define the problems and difficulties that individuals face. The developmental theory approaches problems from the life span perspective that describes them as events or crisis that have happened within a lifetime. The situational perspective describes problems that have happened in one instance or timeframe. Meeting basic human needs, both physical and mental, is another method of explaining the problems that clients encounter. One theory suggests that social change has a primary major effect on the problems that individuals experience. Culture may also be a critical aspect in understanding the problems an individual or a community may face to the human service helper considering how it could affect...
