Easyinternet Case Study

...Executive Summary Due to poor financial performance, EasyInternetCafe has decided divert from large cafes to a franchise model with smaller café sizes. Its main goal is also to focus on its core competencies such as the yield management model. In order to do so, it will be outsourcing its non-core competence activities which include logistics. Ingram Micro has been chosen as the logistics provider as they offer more full service activities while remaining at a lower cost than its competitors. By including Ingram Micro in corporate decisions and meetings, EIC can keep Ingram Micro accountable and stay updated with issues as they arise (just as they would if they owned the logistics arm of the Company). By having the capital freed from investing in hardware and stores, EIC is able to invest more in creating value through their management of franchisees and their yield management model. Issues Identification EasyInternetCafe (EIC) was launched in 1999 under the umbrella of the EasyGroup. Their mission is to provide customers with internet access at low costs and to capitalize on the tech boom. Despite the excellent support and recognition from the public, EIC is experiencing adversity of keeping their business profitable after the “dot-com” bubble burst. Their business plan of owning many large cafes that could house 250-500 PC terminals at each café is not working. They have decided to restructure their business by downsizing the cafes...

Vocation

...“People of genius do not excel in any profession because they work in it, they work in it because they exel.” Such a large part of our lives is figuring out what to do with our lives. There are so many options; often times people are lost as to where to go. In our society, many of the decisions we make are made with money in mind. People will do almost anything for money, even if that means being unhappy. This class, and my SI education in general has framed for me a new way of living. That is, living happily. This does not mean that the work/job I perform is not hard. Instead, it means, that I must find something that I enjoy doing, and find a career based around my interest. This concept is essentially vocation. Mick McCarthy, William Spohn, and Michael Himes examine the term vocation. Each author presents a slightly different perspective on this term: McCarthy’s is a personal view; Spohn has a more spiritual view; Himes outlines more of a practical guide for one seeking their vocation. Despite their different attempts of explaining vocation, all authors agree in something. All strongly suggest that a vocation is more than a job or a career choice. All show that pursuing a vocation requires a deeper calculation and an examination of ones motivation and choice. That is, a higher level of discernment than selecting a job must be part of a vocational choice. Another similarity is that all the articles describe a kind of restlessness as part of the process in discovering ones...

Logistics

...military's need to supply themselves with arms, ammunition and rations as they moved from their base to a forward position. In ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine empires, there were military officers with the title ‘Logistikas’ who were responsible for financial and supply distribution matters. The Oxford English dictionary defines logistics as: “The branch of military science having to do with procuring, maintaining and transporting material, personnel and facilities.”Another dictionary definition is: "The time related positioning of resources." As such, logistics is commonly seen as a branch of engineering which creates "people systems" rather than "machine systems".... Military logistics In military logistics, logistics officers manage how and when to move resources to the places they are needed. In military science, maintaining one's supply lines while disrupting those of the enemy is a crucial—some would say the most crucial—element of military strategy, since an armed force without resources and transportation is defenseless. The defeats of the British in the American War of Independence, and the defeat of Erwin Rommel in World War II, have been largely attributed to logistical...

Psychology of Aging

...challenges in terms of belonging, especially for older people. The interrelationship between aging and a sense of belonging is complicated because the aging process itself is influenced by many factors, including biological, sociological, psychological, economical, and attitudinal factors. Each of these factors has a unique impact on aging. Exacerbating these factors are society’s negative stereotypes and myths, discrimination, biases, prejudices, and negative attitudes toward the older people, which are cumulatively identified as ageism for the purposes of this paper.
