This week’s materials are mainly focusing on work. The readings are about how work ethic has changed over time and how we, especially working parents, have to fix our times or get a new work that is more flexible. Further analysis of work, and of the sources that describes the work we do, suggests that inflexible work is not the only point that is effecting the balance between work and personal life. What also makes an effect on us is the workload that we have to handle on a daily basis. Based on 9-5 No Longer video, 63% of people say they do not have time for the family and 55% say they do not have time for themselves. Flexibility is the first thing people will pick. The readings got me thinking how does overworking impacts the employee and the company? Part of the answer is overworking can cause a bad quality of life. Another part of the …show more content…

Generations in the Workplace

...Who or what is to blame for the work ethic of the new generation? From a glance and without much thought, I would have told you two months ago, that they, the younger generation was to blame. I would have said that the use of technology enables them to work without much thought. The pace of their generation, I assumed, has forgotten about some basic moral principles. As reported by Sheehy in Case 4.6, “there is a whole generation of workers with a frightening new work ethic: contempt for customers, indifference to quality and service, unrealistic expectations about the world of work, and a get-away-with-what-you-can attitude (Barry & Shaw, 2010, p.197).” From my recent studies, I’ve learned a new depth to ethics and morality in business. Can I justify my answer above and place all the blame on the younger generations? I’ve asked myself a few questions. What fundamental moral values are lacking from today’s workplace? What has changed in the work force? How has the way of doing business drastically changed over the past few decades? To get my answers I looked back at my own career and experiences. The most prominent is the differences between generations that are represented in today’s work place. The advancement of technology and the speed in which it’s implemented has drastically changed how we do business now than in past decades. These two differences I feel can easily affect basic fundamental values. What basic fundamental value is used to build great relationships...

Personal Ethics

...Personal Ethics Ethical choices are a very personal aspect of our individual being. What one considers to be ethical may not coincide with someone else’s principles, norms, or standards of conduct. Generally laws and regulations in the United States are passed by the majority not by the few opposing entities. It is our character that plays a great role in how we would vote on important issues and the difference in our character is the reason for a complete breakdown of the ethical systems (Treviño & Nelson, 2011). Ethics, values, and morals are the building blocks of our very character with in the ethical system. The ethical system is segregated into six categories: Duty-based, entitlement-based, goal-based, humanistic, relativistic, and rights-based. Of these six, I happen to best be described under the duty-based ethical system. I feel morally obligated and committed to behave and act in a certain manner that is consistent with my beliefs and upbringing. Having been born to a Catholic family, I was raised learning right from wrong in a clear-cut, black and white sort of way. My parents were the typical Hispanic parents, dominant disciplinarian father and loving, soft-spoken mother. Growing into adolescence I changed my religious point of view and a couple of my morals with them. Becoming a Christian posed greater challenges and self-sacrifice but it was for a greater purpose than to please myself. It was during my early teens that I made my life-long friends and...

Land has endured everything that man has had to offer and everything before man. Agriculture has drastically changed over the course of time. Farming used to be an art in which families would take pride in growing a strong, dependable product on a manageable size of land. A New Work Ethic

...A New Work Ethic Describe how typical the attitudes that Sheehy reports appear to be in work environments you have experienced. I worked as a merchandise manager at Bloomingdales where the average age of the sales associates where 18 to 25 years old. At that time many of the employees regarded the work as something to do until they found real jobs, or until they graduated from college. For many of the It failed to meet the economic and professional standards a college graduates envisioned their college education would, or should afford them. Consistent with Sheehy’s observations, task like sweeping, vacuuming or wiping down glass table were more popular than waiting on customers and restocking shelves with merchandise and all tasks took longer to complete than expected. These associates were smart and looked for any opportunity to get over on the system and do the least amount of work even while getting commission on every sale that was made. These employees were also smart and studied the handbook in and out. They knew attendance policies and exactly how many times they could arrive late to work before they where written up. The associates also played games with the organization to see how many loop holes they could take advantage of. When some of the college students needed time off to study, they would call out and return before needing a doctor’s note. Some of the students would even go to the doctor and make false claims of being sick in order to have their...

Market Society

...there are endless options for people looking to get into the workplace, consisting of various job titles from health care, transportation to real-estate. However, this array of options was not always the case. The world we know of today has transitioned into a market economy. Polayni’s definition of market economy is “a self-regulating system of markets. It is an economy directed by market prices” (Polayni, 43). To elaborate, this means every product is controlled by supply and demand, and the price is not determined by the government. Differing from today, in the past the world was based on reciprocity and redistribution, which in retrospect is gift giving, either to a one person or a larger group. Everyone relied on reciprocity in order to live. The transition to market economy was a drastic one, which furthermore changed the world today. In this essay, I will go into the work of Karl Polayni, James Rinehart and Richard Bendix, who summarized the works of Max Weber, who all discussed the transformation to market economy and how it affected our society. Karl Polanyi describes the market society as “the great transformation” in today’s economy. He believes it was significant because it changed the way the economy would work and provided maximum profit and stability for families and different societies. Before market economy, societies relied mostly on reciprocity and redistribution for trade and services. Redistribution can be defined as the distribution of...

Beginning with the story of his personal friend, a man named Enrico, Sennett presents an account of a low-class family in the 1970s. “Though clear, Enrico's life story was not simple.” Enrico was a janitor for the majority of his life, saved for fifteen years to buy his first house, and worked nonstop to provide for his family. Ethic Dilemmas Bshs 332

...Work place dilemma Bshs 332 4-16-2012 Kathleen Roberts Ethical dilemmas can occur in all areas of life. Ethics can show up in work, school, and raising children, in all of these areas dilemmas can happen. Ethics in the workplace seems to be most pressing. For example “the relationship between values and business ethics has more recently enlarged its scope to include spiritual values (Kolodinsky, 2008).” Ethics in the workplace are constantly changing. Ethics are challenged on a day to day basis and making the choice of which one is the right one. The work place offers several differences in how others will handle ethical situations. Ethics in the workplace are important as they create a secure work place for everyone. According to the dictionary work ethics is “a belief in the moral benefit and importance of work and its inherent ability to strengthen character (Dictionary, 2012).” I use to work for a dispatching company for a private security service. They would service apartment buildings, offices, and stores basically anyone that wanted extra security. I was responsible for scheduling, rescheduling officers, answering the phones concerning our services and providing assistance. When I would go to work I was not responsible for coworker feuds but I did seem to play the middleman when they did happen. I worked alongside three other dispatchers and two of them did not seem to get along on any given day. They had a hard time working together to work on and through work...

...BUSINESS ETHICS The Evolution of Business Ethics Ebony Thomas Ashford University OMM 640 April 6, 2015 1 THE EVOLUTION OF BUSINESS ETHICS 2 The Evolution of Business Ethics Ethics includes a mixture of one's beliefs and standards in civilization. Every person has their own perspective of ethics because every situation, person, and culture is different. According to Ferrell et al (2013), "business ethics comprises the principles, values, and standards that guide behavior in the world of business" (Ferrell, Fraedrich, & Ferrell, 2013, p. 7). In simpler terms, business ethics are a collaboration of both society's ethics of right and wrong and the people who work for and have any involvement in an organization ethics. Therefore, regardless of an individual definition of ethics, it is equally important in a business environment and practicing good ethical behavior can eliminate the potential of a hostile environment.
