re: HPV & Cervical Cancer: A Health Promotion Plan to Promote Awareness and Prevention of HPV & Cervical Cancer

Dear Dr. Brandt:

I am writing to request funding for a program that is designed to bring awareness and prevention to Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which causes virtually all cases of cervical cancer and genital warts, while encouraging a healthier lifestyle among young minority girls ages 10-18 in the state of South Carolina. Many young girls are at risk of getting the HPV virus due to lack of education and awareness about the virus.

The program that we are launching is relatively simple. WEWHC is a non-profit organization that prides itself on educating the public about sexually transmitted infections/diseases. We are dedicated to empowering the public and proving them with the necessary tools and resources to make sound and educated judgments. Our staff is compiled of volunteers to include nurses, social workers, administrative assistants, health care physicians, and psychologists. Our motto is, “It takes a village.” With this concept in mind, the staff at WEWHC knows and understands the importance of having more than one person involved in helping the community. After one year the program will be evaluated by an independent source to determine the success of the program and it is during this time that adjustments will be made accordingly, if need be.

Our proposal requests $10,200 to help with the cost of the vaccine, marketing, computer software, hardware, training, and other materials necessary for the success of this project.

This is a program that will empower others to educate not only themselves but others in their family to make informed decisions. It starts out as decisions that are related to HPV and before long; the decisions will encompass all aspects of an individual’s life.

Respectfully,

Women Empowering Women Health Care

Total Amount Requested: $10, 500

Goals

WEWHC’s ultimate goal is to reduce HPV infection in the community by educating the public to include parents and children and give them the tools to make an informed decision about HPV inoculation.

WEWHC’s Objectives:

Develop public education programs to inform and educate about HPV to:

3 Health care workers

4 Parents and children

5 School faculty and staff

Statement of Need

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide and HPV is implicated in more than 99% of these cancers. Gardasil and Cervarix are drugs used for inoculations and are expected to help decrease cervical cancers. HPV is a sexually transmitted infection that occurs through transmission through contact (sexually). HPV 16 and 18 are the high risk types and 6 and 11 are the low risk types. It is recommended that girls between the ages of 10-18 receive the inoculation prior to having sex. Girls between these ages in Columbia, SC are in need of education about the virus and methods to prevent the virus. Many parents do not make informed decisions about the vaccination, they either give it to the child because the doctor says or they do not know the virus exists. It is the goal of WEWHC to educate and inform the public. Impact

There is a need to develop public education about the link between HPV and cervical cancer (Brophy, 2008). This is a sexually transmitted infection and not disease that may cause cervical cancer in women (Young, 2009). The information that is disseminated to the public seems to be quite confusing and often times parents and children do not make informed decisions about inoculation. The purpose of this program is to ensure that the parents and child have the correct resources and tools to make informed decisions. The target market is parents as well as girls between the ages of 10-18 regardless if they are sexually active or not. WEWHC has a staff of both clinical and non-clinical person to help the public make informed decisions. The agency will also pay for those that decide they want to receive the vaccination. This will benefit the public by showing them how to educate themselves and others and help them make informed decisions about all aspects of their lives. It is understood that education is power and researching is the tool to help empower others.

Sustainability

There will not be a charge for educating the public. There is a brief screening process which will involve the parents and the child filling out a health information form, the child will receive a free physical as well as a nursing assessment. The only source of revenue is the funds that we will receive from the grant. All “employees” are volunteers and receive continuing education units for working with the unit.

Budget

| |Price |Quantity |Total |
|Epson Scanner |$300 |1 |$300 |
|Dell PC with Monitor |$1200 |5 |$6000 |
|Training |$1200 |1 Day |$1200 |
|Paper |$10 |300 |$3000 |

Project Management (10 points)

Evaluation

WEWHC will utilized a third party to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. This agency will review policies and procedures, the distribution of funds, the marketing of the program, and the effectiveness of the program. Adjustments will be made accordingly based upon the recommendations made from the agency.

Cancer Control Abstract

...CANCER CONTROL PROJECT ABSTRACT A. PROJECT TITLE: Self-sampling for HPV infection among low-income Hispanic women. B. SPECIFIC AIMS: Although cervical cancer is preventable through regular screening 1 with Pap smear and liquid-based cytology,2 only 72% of women in the Texas-Mexico border and 82% of women in the US undergo such regular screening.3 Hispanic women in this region have one of the highest cervical cancer mortality rates in the nation.4 Previous studies have identified barriers to screening in this minority population such as lack of access to healthcare, fear of pain during the gynecological exam and embarrassment.5 Persistent infection with oncogenic Human Papillomavirus (HPV) types is necessary for developing cervical cancer.6 Thus, HPV testing of women 30 – 65 years of age has been added to the cervical cancer screening guidelines in addition to Pap/cytology (co-testing).2 Self-sampling is a novel approach to detect HPV infection, it allows women to collect their own cervical specimen with a brush in the clinic or in their own homes.7 It has high sensitivity (74%) and specificity (88%) compared to physician collected samples.8-13 Women that deem it acceptable cite reasons such as privacy, costs, and lack of need for an office visit.13-21 However, Pap/cytology has been preferred over self-sampling among some groups because of low confidence in self-sampling accuracy and uncertainty over performing it correctly.13,17,20,22,23 Self-sampling has been least likely...

Many states have proposed to make the HPV vaccine mandatory for children before entering school. This article points out that people who distrust vaccines worry about the safety of the HPV vaccine. There are religious concerns with the vaccine as well. The main point of the article is that new legal frameworks need to be created because state governments are quickly converting the HPV vaccine, a recommended vaccine, into a mandatory vaccine. The research in this article is biased in my opinion. It focuses only on the distrust and concern of safety of the HPV vaccine. Apple was the perfect place for Donna since being a young company light on formality that underwent frequent reorganizations. Apple’s fast growth, loose organization, and corporate culture allowed Donna to make decisions “above her pay grade” and thus demonstrate her ability to perform at higher levels of responsibility. Place yourself in Dubinsky’s position. Why did she respond the way she did to the JIT proposal? Donna could never understand why the JIT proposal was even being discussed. She didn’t see any problems in the distribution area, and thought this was a cost cutting measure by Jobs because the Mackintosh division was underperforming. Donna never understood why the reins had been taking from her hands in the first place and given to the taskforce. Donna viewed this as a direct attack on her job and remarked “I didn’t know why there should be a taskforce at all. Distribution’s our job”. In her mind everything was working so well. There was no problem to solve. What do you think she should have done differently and why? Be specific....

Grant Proposal

...Grant Proposals It doesn’t matter if the business is just an agency, organization, for profit or non-profit they need money to operate. Profit companies focus on getting their funding through revenues and interest-bearing loans. Non-profit companies depend on grants, loans, and public generosity. It is a must to understand that non-profit agencies are businesses too and they also need a way to pay for their expenses. Writing grants is the way an agency finds funding. Either an employee professional grant writer or having administrative personnel to write the proposals, they then submit them for review to potential donors. Writing grants proposals is far from an easy to deal with. There are deadlines, awareness of what programs a funder is looking to invest their time and money into. Details for the application are an important part to writing a grant. Some are short and don’t require much information, while others require detailed description of the program. This is the grant writer’s priority to make sure that it meets requirement and all the information that is needed is there. The primary point to a proposal is that is to get their program out there and to make it clear and honest picture of the organization project for those funding and in general. The writer must convince the review committee that their program is the best to choose. Grant proposals are the entrance to a organization, and creative writing can either win the committee over or break the deal. The information...

Disclosure of Certain Contingency Losses

...“Disclosure of Certain Contingency Losses” Exposure Draft Critique Contingencies refer to existing conditions, situations, or sets of circumstances involving uncertainty as to possible gains or losses to an entity that will ultimately be resolved when one or more future events occur or fail to occur (ASC Glossary). The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) issued an exposure draft in July 2010 relating to additional disclosures relating to certain loss contingencies. FASB argues the necessity of this proposal arises from concerns of investors and other financial statement users relating to disclosures about loss contingencies under the existing guidance. Proponents argue that existing guidance does not provide adequate information to assist users in assessing the likelihood, timing, and magnitude of future cash outflows associated with loss contingencies (Exposure Draft, 1). Although the exposure draft intends to improve financial statement transparency, the balance between “issuing an improved standard must be maintained against possible prejudicial impacts that could adversely affect a company and its investors” (pwc.com) The first issue of the exposure draft relates to amounts that must be disclosed based on expert testimony. The exposure draft proposes the requirement of disclosing estimated amounts of reasonably possible and remote losses based on the testimony of an expert witness (Chadbourne and Park LLP). This disclosure is flawed and may be misleading...

All proposals will call for action, focus on the future, and center on audience. The ultimate objective is to get something done. To achieve this, the solution should be attainable and well-conceived; furthermore, proposals should provide enough evidence to convince readers that the solution will actually produce the effects it sets out to achieve. A proposal should always seek to put forth the best possible solution to a problem. For this paper, you should pick some contemporary issue that interests you (for example, gay marriage), consider your own position on this issue (gay marriage is a good thing), pinpoint a major problem associated with the issue (should gay marriage be legalized?), and finally pose a viable solution to this problem (Yes, because…etc). In this paper, you should try extremely hard to emphasize your ethos. Why should we trust you and, by extension, the solution you propose? In addition, you should certainly strive to provide logical, well-researched EVIDENCE that will support your claim (logos). A grant proposal can be utilized as a tool for managing change, as a document which is persuasive in defining a problem or need and then proposes a solution to the problem for which they are requesting funding to implement the solution(s). Grant proposals are comprised of many components such as: an abstract, table of contents, specific aims and needs/problem statement, target populations, approach methodology, long/short-term goals, process, outcome, and impact objectives, timeline, evaluation plan, agency capacity and project management, and budget and budget justifications.
