...Allen Covington HUM 201-001 Prof. C. Lincoln Self-Reflection Essay Introduction Self-reflection has been defined in a number of ways, but for the purpose of this thesis I will use it in a contemplative manner, toward the end of, relating how my experiences; ‘could affect my career as a Social Worker’. This self-reflection paper is personal. It shares the impact that HUM 201 has had on me, and my understanding of; what will be expected of me as a person and professional. As I understand the goals of the essay, it is to have someone consider and think about future uses of this knowledge being acquired. As part of my preparation for this paper, I looked back on the course from the beginning of the semester. I looked at my goals as a future educator in the field of ‘Human Services’, and thought about how this semester has changed my perspective (this coming from someone not unfamiliar with human services) on what it takes, to truly be effective as a leader in the field of social work as a result of this course. Through this self-reflection I’ve noticed the inter-play between my personal knowledge and what is being taught, the ‘role’ of ‘social worker’ first came to my attention at a very young, I lived in a family constantly in need of social services. The most striking realization I came away with is, the sway the psychological and sociological perspectives relate to each other (in very complex ways), more than you’d acknowledge without serious training to ferret out...

...Personal Reflection Paper Personal Reflection Paper In this paper, I am going to identify a point of time in which I experienced invidious comparison and vicarious traumatization. While identifying theses to aspects, I am also going to address how to stop invidious comparison. As well as identifying strategies that I use to avoid vicarious traumatization in my own personal life. I will also go in to depth to show how to avoid vicarious traumatization as a human service worker. Lastly, I am going to address the strategies that can be considered or developed to avoid vicarious traumatization. What is invidious comparison? Invidious comparison is the comparing yourself to others. It can be through race, sexual orientation, and religion. Invidious comparison can make a person feel that their self-worth is not wanted and even take its toll on the person doing the comparison themselves. It can send you into a depressive state where you develop levels of stress. To stop invidious comparison, we must first get an understanding on others and accept the different views that other may possess. Everyone is different in their own way. There will also be an individual that may excel in different things that you may have thought you were good in. Some may be incapable of abilities that one may have. By understanding these aspects we must acknowledge the strengths that we have and do not have without dwelling on the weaknesses of others. Everywhere we go there are comparisons, it is important...

...Personal Reflection Paper Personal Reflection Paper Invidious comparison is a harmful correlation that demonstration one’s individual view of others as indicated by another as per their class, race, sex, or religion. This is a negative practice to adapt to. I work daily trying to redirect my mind from comparing myself to others; it is human nature to have these thoughts. I have notice when I do compare myself to others I become sad because I have not reach the level of their success and the flip side to this is I never compare myself to anyone less fortunate than me. No one win at comparing themselves to others. The direction I have taken to stop invidious comparing myself to other are concentrating on my own beauty. I have created a habit in tell myself how beautiful I am every time I look in the mirror. I made a short and long term list to help me keep up with my progress. Watching my list advance keeps me center on and therefore, I can see my growth. These habits have helped me to appreciate who I am. I enjoy writing in my journal several days a week it helps to shift the atmosphere from comparing myself to other. A saying I like to quote is “doing unto others as you would have them do unto you”. To me, that quote is telling me to be kind to other people and help them. If this is done I won’t have time to compare myself to anyone. Last, I stay focus on the positive things I do in helping other and this help me to appreciate what is positive in me. The definition of vicarious...

...and a big learning curve for me in caring for others. I was delighted that I had been able to support Mrs C to eat nearly all of her meal which she clearly enjoyed. The ‘protected mealtime’ policy ensured that I had time to dedicate to assist her and as she did not have the ability to feed herself, without my help she would have eaten very little or nothing at all. In order to communicate with Mrs C, I modified the usual rules of communication. I did not speak to Mrs C in an inappropriate way or use elder talk which may have damaged her self esteem and confidence (Argle 1994). I talked to her as I would address any adult but put more emphasis on non-verbal communication which according to Caris Verhallen (1999) is the main way in which humans communicate, in order for her to receive my message, extract the meaning and give me feedback. By holding Mrs C’ gaze I was maintaining communication and encouraging engagement and interaction (Argyle 1996). By nodding her head, maintaining eye contact and opening her mouth Mrs C showed me that she understood that I wanted to assist her with her meal and gave me permission to feed her. In order to assist Mrs C with her lunch I had to invade her personal space, I used touch to communicate and help her relax, feel safe, reassure and offer warmth and togetherness in a setting which...

...Vulnerable People in the Workplace Vulnerable People in the Workplace Paper Watson is a Nursing theorist who recognizes nursing as the art of caring and the need to treat each patient holistically (Watson, 2007). Leininger is another Nursing theorist who realized caring is unique and the core of nursing. According to Leininger’s Cultural Care Theory as cited by Maier-Lorentz (2008), on Transcultural Nursing, nurses need to be aware of various cultures and how to use this knowledge in their daily practice (Maier-Lorentz, 2008). Leininger’s Cultural Care Theory addresses the need for cultural competency in health care. Communication with a patient can be affected by a patient’s culture. In addition, nurses need to avoid ethnocentric bias. In an effort to achieve a holistic approach to health care one must have an understanding of cultural factors that may affect proposed health care interventions. Leininger’s Cultural Care Theory can be hardwired with Watson’s Theory of Human Care to help achieve holistic care of the patient (Leininger & McFarland, 2002). In this paper I will discuss the design of a teaching program at my workplace to help raise awareness about vulnerable populations. According to De Chesney and Anderson (2008), issues with vulnerability can apply to population groups or individual people. De Chesney and Anderson (2008) discuss vulnerable populations that are at higher risk for health issues related to socioeconomic status, cultural issues, or environmental...

...Personal Reflection Paper BSHS/345 November 10, 2014 Personal Reflection Paper Invidious comparison and vicarious traumatization are two very real concepts in life. However, when working in the human service field, both concepts must be controlled to avoid negative outcomes. This paper will describe two concepts and how each has played a part in my life. The first concept of discussion is invidious comparison. The second topic of discussion will focus on vicarious traumatization. Aside from how both concepts have affected me personally, I will examine strategies that can help me avoid vicarious traumatization as a human service worker. The first concept of discussion is invidious comparison. According to Merriam-Webster (2014), invidious comparison is defined as “tending to cause discontent, animosity or envy”. In other words, invidious comparison is when a person compares themselves to others by class, religion, sex, and race. While this concept occurs to everyone, and seems to be a normal part of human nature, negative ramifications such as poor self-esteem, depression, and stress may result if not directed in the correct manner. The concept of invidious comparison is one I can relate to well. For many years, I used to compare myself to those who had more money that I did. While I am ashamed to admit how shallow I was, this comparison brought me into a state of depression. It was during my depressed mode that I realized that I needed to take control of...

...Transferable Skills Self-Reflection Paper Student’s Name Learning Institution Introduction Developing transferable skills is essential in the contemporary economy. Due to the changing market demands, it is worthwhile for an individual to learn and develop skills needed in one place, as well as skills that can be used in another situation. Even in the job market, it is required that an employee should be in a position to perform several tasks at work, rather than been over-specialized, incapacitating one for performing a task outside the normal routine. In line with the concept of transferable skills, learners are encouraged to develop some generic skills or soft skills, such that they are able to do more in the economy. There are challenges in the economy that are associated with professionals who are over-specialized, and possess no transferable skill. The current essay discusses the concept of transferable skills, a self-reflection essay. ...Personal Reflection Paper BSHS 345 August 26, 2014 Personal Reflection Paper Invidious comparison is the act of comparing one person to others according to their class, race, sex, or religion. This act can have a negative effect on people who are aware of it. Growing up in California, where the predominant Hispanic races were of Mexican and Central American origin, I was constantly compared to those Hispanic backgrounds. This was frustrating because I am Colombian and the Colombian Culture is very different from the Central American culture. My mind could not understand why people would compare me to them if I am South American. The traditions, food, music, slang, and even accents were different. American non-Hispanic people would call me, among many other things, a “dirty Mexican” or “wet back.” This was extremely frustrating because neither one of my parents hopped the border nor were they dirty. My young mind did not know how that these people were just ignorant so my frustration turned into anger and total repulsion of races of those other backgrounds and countries. A sense of insecurity and even self-hate would overcome me. I did not want to be Hispanic, I wanted to be white, and I wanted to be accepted. My way of seeing things changed in 2006 when the Immigration Equality Movements became popular. Latino activists would speak at events and in a sense give the people a sense of empowerment and hope. Attending these events made me feel proud of my Hispanic heritage...
