The human services topic that I am choosing this week is one that is close to my heart and it was also in the texts for the week, it is that of elder abuse. A cause for this issue is that the elderly “are often times an invisible population” (Corsini, 2009), many elderly are put aside or put away and not respected as they should be. Elder abuse does not only encompass physical abuse but also emotional, mental and lack of proper care. Psalm 71:9 “Do not cast me off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength is spent” (Holy Bible, ESV). Many times as people age they are looked upon as burdensome, as example hearing and sight are internal factors in aging that could cause accidents and falls which are not their faults they may have …show more content…

She is around 70, has dementia, diabetes, and other health issues. No one in her family comes to look in on her, and she has a habit of wandering sometimes dressed and sometimes just in diaper and shirt, she has been seen sleeping in a chair on her patio in high heat temperatures, and has been seen sleeping there at night which is not safe for her, we as her neighbors have become very concerned as several of us in both buildings have become her ‘babysitters’ we have contacted APS (adult protective services) several times about this but they tell us they cannot do anything until she hurts herself or someone else. It should not have to come to that in order for her to get the assistance that she needs. Proverbs 20:29 “The glory of young men is their strength, but the splendor of old men is their gray hair” the elderly should be honored and taken care just as they took care of others when they were

Business Continuity and Disaster Planning

...crisis that is also experienced by the larger community (such as a large scale fire, chemical spills, pandemic, power outage or extreme weather or geological event) the greater its ability to ensure business continuity throughout the event or reduce delay in recovery (Prewitt, 2005). When business are up and operating during or immediately following a disaster, I believe the community is better able to move into and through the recovery period more quickly than when the businesses have been chronically or mortally wounded. When businesses remain functional employment (and thus individual incomes) remain intact, as well, access to necessary day to day and special disaster recovery items and services are available. Historically, businesses concerned themselves with planning for crisis in service demand. However, the United Nations earmarked the 1990’s as the International Decade for Natural Disaster Risk Reduction (United Nations, 1994). It was during this period that businesses and communities began to prepare in earnest for dire emergencies. Prior to this, consequences of disasters were viewed as general, uncontrolable business losses. Disaster preparedness is vital today and will require...

The Intelligent Essay Assessor: Applications to Educational Technology

...The Intelligent Essay Assessor: Applications to Educational Technology Peter W. Foltz, New Mexico State University Darrell Laham, Knowledge Analysis Technologies Thomas K. Landauer, University of Colorado Abstract The Intelligent Essay Assessor (IEA) is a set of software tools for scoring the quality of essay content. The IEA uses Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA), which is both a computational model of human knowledge representation and a method for extracting semantic similarity of words and passages from text. Simulations of psycholinguistic phenomena show that LSA reflects similarities of human meaning effectively. To assess essay quality, LSA is first trained on domain-representative text. Then student essays are characterized by LSA representations of the meaning of the words used, and they are compared with essays of known quality in regard to their degree of conceptual relevance and the amount of relevant content. Over many diverse topics, the IEA scores agreed with human experts as accurately as expert scores agreed with each other. Implications are discussed for incorporating automatic essay scoring in more general forms of educational technology. 1. Introduction While writing is an essential part of the educational process, many instructors find it difficult to incorporate large numbers of writing assignments in their courses due to the effort required to evaluate them. However, the ability to convey information verbally is an important educational achievement...
